Fantasy Football Week 6 Start/Sit Advice: Sleepers & Duds (2023)

Which under-the-radar players might be able to give your fantasy team a lift? Which chalky players might not be as safe as they seem? Our featured analysts name some potential sleepers and underachievers along with start/sit advice for Week 6.

Fantasy Football Week 6 Start/Sit Advice

Q. Which player outside of the top 100 in the FantasyPros flex rankings is a good sleeper start and why do you think he has upside this week?

Cole Kmet (TE – CHI)

“I know the tight end position is very tricky after the top two or three options, but Cole Kmet feels like a smash play for me lately. He’s currently at 107th in flex rankings and TE12, but I’m happily starting him over other tight ends ahead of him, like Kyle Pitts and Dallas Goedert. Kmet finished as TE1 in Week 4 and TE7 in Week 5. He’s broken out, and I’m not benching him until he gives me a good reason to do so.”
Andrew Hall (FantasyPros)

Logan Thomas (TE – WAS)

“Logan Thomas is the TE9 this year despite missing 1.5 games because of a concussion, averaging 9.4 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. More importantly, the veteran leads the team in target per route run rate (18%) among players with at least 13 targets this season. Thomas is coming off his best performance this year, totaling nine receptions on 11 targets for 77 receiving yards and a touchdown, scoring 16.2 fantasy points against the Chicago Bears. Now he faces an Atlanta Falcons defense that gave up seven receptions on 10 targets for 65 receiving yards, a touchdown, and 16 fantasy points to Dalton Schultz last week and the second-most fantasy points per game to tight ends in 2023. Thomas has top-five upside in Week 6.”
Mike Fanelli (FantasyPros)

Michael Gallup (WR – DAL)

“The Cowboys face the Chargers in Week 6, and that makes Michael Gallup a good sleeper start. The Chargers have conceded the most points to wide receivers so far this season, and while CeeDee Lamb will be the main beneficiary, Gallup has played ahead of Brandin Cooks in recent weeks.”
Ben Wasley (The Fantasy First Down)

Jonnu Smith (TE – ATL)

“Jonnu Smith is an excellent sleeper for Week 6. After missing Week 1, he has since gone on to record 6 or more targets in four straight games. He has gone over 45 yards receiving in three out of four games, going over 65 yards in the last two games. His short average depth of target has made him a prime target for the struggling Desmond Ridder. Look for that to continue with another solid fantasy output this week.”
Aaron St Denis (The League Winners)

“Only three TEs have more receiving yards than Jonnu Smith this season, even though he threw up a 0 in the opener. Over the past three weeks, no TE has more. And that span includes Kyle Pitts’ apparent Week 5 rebound game. Smith has 4, 5, 6, and 6 catches the past four weeks and now gets a weak Washington defense. Use Smith at fantasy’s worst position.”
Matt Schauf (Draft Sharks)

Zay Jones (WR – JAC)

“Even with the likes of Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Evan Engram ahead of him in the pecking order in Jacksonville, Zay Jones has been able to carve out a role for himself. Jones has averaged about 6 targets per contest this year, and has two touchdowns to boot. Who did one of those scores come against? Well, if you guessed the Colts, congratulations because you won. The Colts have been, I will be nice, putrid against WRs this season thus far. If Jones plays, he is day-to-day with a knee injury as of now, I think he could be a sneaky play for anyone with injury or bye concerns in Week 6. ”
Ed Birdsall (Talking Points Sports)

Chuba Hubbard (RB – CAR)

“Chuba Hubbard is my play from outside the Top 100. There are two reasons why: game script + Miles Sanders‘ injury. Sanders spent time dealing with a nagging groin injury and missed practice Wednesday due to a shoulder injury. When you combine the injury with the game script that could mimic last week(where Hubbard received garbage time snaps), you could see a useful running back outside of the Top 100.”
Joe Pepe (Beyond The Gridiron)

Zach Ertz (TE – ARI)

“Zach Ertz has tremendous appeal as a sleeper in Week 6. Ertz has averaged nearly 7 targets per game and has finished inside the Top 12 of TEs in three out of the five weeks. Most importantly, Week 6 has Ertz going up against the Rams, who have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to TEs. If you are looking outside of the Top 100 for a flex play, Zach Ertz is your sleeper.”
Chew Russell (Going For 2)

Darnell Mooney (WR – CHI)

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Darnell Mooney has a nice game in Week 6. Mooney ran a route on over 80% of dropbacks last week but failed to convert any of his 95 air yards on 4 targets. Justin Fields has looked great throwing the ball downfield lately, and Mooney has played over 70% of snaps in three straight games now. The matchup at home against MIN is great, too. ”
Joe Orrico (No Expert Fantasy Football)

“Take the shot w/ Darnell Mooney against the Vikings. The Bears tried to get him involved against the Commanders, and he did finish with a O-fer. But, there were narrow misses on two deep balls. I suspect that Getsy goes back to the well, and we see him involved early against a bad Minnesota secondary. ”
Mike Harmon (Swollen Dome)

Kyle Pitts (TE – ATL)

“Kyle Pitts finally got his share of looks last week! He had 11 targets with 7 receptions for 87 yards. Hopefully, Desmond Ridder has figured out how talented this guy is and continues to pepper him with targets. If he does, eclipsing 100 yards and a touchdown shouldn’t be a surprise.”
Adam Dove (The Fantasy Couriers)

Jonathan Mingo (WR – CAR)

“Jonathan Mingo is a great sleeper for week six. Mingo plays the Dolphins, who have given up 60-plus yards to five receivers over the last three games. Mingo has seen five-plus targets in each game this year, with week five being his best outing. I expect the Panthers to be playing catch up, allowing Mingo the opportunity to produce for us in fantasy. I like Mingo’s chances to finish as a top-35 receiver in week six. ”
Steven Pintado (The Fantasy Coaches)

Quentin Johnston (WR – LAC)

“Quentin Johnston is straight-up criminally under-ranked this week. The L.A. Chargers are coming off a bye, which means that Justin Herbert had one extra week to help heal his hand injury, Austin Ekeler had an extra week to get near 100% health, and most importantly, Johnston had the extra week to fully immerse himself in Kellen Moore’s playbook so that he can officially take over the Mike Williams role in this offense. This DAL/LAC Monday night football matchup sports the highest total of all 14 games in Week 6, and in Week 4, in his last game, Johnston already saw career highs in routes run and target share. His box scores haven’t shown us anything so far, but the rookie has the juice we need to make explosive plays in this offense. Johnston was the sixth-most athletic of 43 WR prospects in this year’s NFL 2023 Draft, boasting an elite 98th-percentile burst score and 89th-percentile catch radius. He has the speed to make big plays after the catch and the size to earn RZ targets as well. Sign me up.”

Q. Which player inside the top 40 in the FantasyPros flex rankings is likely to disappoint fantasy managers this week?

Jerome Ford (RB – CLE)

“I’m anticipating a disappointing week from Cleveland RB Jerome Ford. The 49ers defense is very solid and it’s very likely that the Browns are playing from behind. This could leave Ford on the outside looking in from a fantasy perspective. The bye week should have Deshaun Watson healthy, and hopefully, the Browns spent the extra time game-planning on how to beat the dominant Niners. I’m likely starting Ford if I have him, but I’m keeping my expectations low.”
Andrew Hall (FantasyPros)

Jerome Ford is my bust for Week 6. Start a running back against the 49ers defense? No, thank you! Ford has averaged 1.8 and 2.8 yards per carry in the last two weeks and gets a run defense I want no part of. Look for Ford to continue his march toward mediocrity as the Browns get blown out by the NFL’s best team.”
Aaron St Denis (The League Winners)

Breece Hall (RB – NYJ)

“Breece Hall is coming off a massive performance, totaling 177 rushing yards, a touchdown, and 26.9 half-point PPR fantasy points. While the second-year running back averaged eight yards per rushing attempt, he faced the worst run defense in the NFL in Week 5. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case this coming week. The Philadelphia Eagles have held running backs to only 10.5 fantasy points per game, the fewest in the NFL. They have surrendered fewer than seven fantasy points to running backs in 60% of their matchups this year, including last week. According to Fantasy Points Data, the Eagles have the second-highest stuff run rate in the NFL (54.4%). Expect a frustrating week from Hall.”
Mike Fanelli (FantasyPros)

Chris Olave (WR – NO)

“Chris Olave has a total of 16 yards across the last two weeks and now faces the strong Houston secondary. He’s a very scary start in Week 6, especially with Alvin Kamara gaining a significant target share and Derek Carr struggling to get the ball downfield.”
Ben Wasley (The Fantasy First Down)

Rhamondre Stevenson (RB – NE)

“Even a matchup with the Raiders can’t make me comfy with Rhamondre Stevenson as my RB2. The guy sits third-worst in the league in rush yards over expected per attempt, ahead of only Cam Akers and Dalvin Cook. His blockers aren’t helping, ranking 29th in adjusted line yards to date. And his QB can’t seem to make it through a game without getting pulled. Stevenson sits outside the top 24 RBs in the Week 6 DraftSharks.com rankings.”
Matt Schauf (Draft Sharks)

Rhamondre Stevenson is sinking like a lead balloon, and it isn’t due to talent. The New England Patriots were blanked last week by the Saints. Stevenson was held to 8 carries for 24 yards and 0 receptions. He hasn’t eclipsed 60 yards in a game yet this year! Couple a recently improved Raider defense with a non-existent passing game for New England and Stevenson will be in for another tough week.”
Adam Dove (The Fantasy Couriers)

“Is it even a hot take to call Rhamondre Stevenson a bust at this point in the season? He’s finished as the RB45, RB42, and RB31 over his past three weeks, seemingly getting worse and less efficient in each consecutive outing. And the Patriots offense as a whole has shown us nothing outside of some comical Matt Jones pick-sixes. As bad as the Raiders’ run defense has looked at times this season, they’re actually ranked 9th in PFF run defense and 10th in ESPN’s run stop win rate metric. The Pats, on the other hand, rank just 21st in PFF run blocking. Last year, Stevenson’s saving grace was his involvement as a top option for dump-down passes, but he’s not getting those anymore this year, and he is already splitting way too much time with Ezekiel Elliott than makes us all comfortable. This all goes to say that you should TRY to find someone better to put in your flex or RB spot than Rhamondre this week. Consensus (ECR) has him at 41st overall. I’ve got him at a nice 69, and even then, I think I might be too high.”
Christopher Dell (Betting Predators)

Derrick Henry (RB – TEN)

“I am seriously concerned with Derrick Henry, and a lot of it just isn’t his fault. The offense as a whole for the Titans absolutely stinks, the defense can’t stop a nosebleed in the downfield passing game, and he simply gets phased out when the Titans are down for the pass-catching back Tyjae Spears. Now the Titans face a trip to London this week against a Ravens team that hasn’t passed any eye tests at all, but they have not conceded a rushing touchdown to opposing running backs all year. If you (somehow) have better options, I would consider sitting King Henry in Week 6, sadly.”
Ed Birdsall (Talking Points Sports)

“Hate to do it, but it’s Derrick Henry. The King teased us in Week 4 with a big effort that was bolstered by a jump pass. That effort has been bookended by two absolute duds, and Tyjae Spears keeps picking up shares of the snap count.”
Mike Harmon (Swollen Dome)

DeVonta Smith (WR – PHI)

“I would be careful using DeVonta Smith. He has only two games over 75 yards and only one game where he has eclipsed 15 fantasy points. Smith has finished outside the Top-15 WR in five of the six games in 2023.”
Joe Pepe (Beyond The Gridiron)

Brian Robinson Jr. (RB – WAS)

“Brian Robinson Jr. enters Week 6 as the RB-14 on the season, bolstered largely by a 28.9-point boom in Week 2 where he finished as THE RB-1. Unfortunately, outside of Week 2, Robinson has failed to finish inside the top-12. With the offense flowing through the arm of Sam Howell and the Commanders facing fantasy’s stingiest defense to RBs in the Falcons, do not expect a big week out of Brian Robinson Jr.”
Chew Russell (Going For 2)

Brian Robinson is going to disappoint in Week 6. The Falcons are allowing the least fantasy points per game to RBs on the season. Washington’s defense isn’t great by any means, so there’s also the possibility of a negative game script for Robinson. In a similar situation last week, Robinson totaled just 10 rushing yards on 6 carries. Meanwhile, Antonio Gibson saw 54% snaps and 6 targets. Robinson is a matchup-dependent RB2 and just so happens to have a bad one in Week 6.”
Joe Orrico (No Expert Fantasy Football)

Dameon Pierce (RB – HOU)

“Dameon Pierce is a bust in week six. Pierce plays the Saints, allowing the third-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs. Pierce is running a lousy 2.9 YPC in five games this year. He is seeing the volume but is not producing with it. Pierce is ranked in the top 40 on opportunity alone, but it isn’t enough for him to be there. He will likely finish under ten fantasy points for the fourth time this year. ”
