Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Trevor Lawrence, Derrick Henry, Kyle Pitts, David Montgomery

Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Trevor Lawrence, Derrick Henry, Kyle Pitts, David Montgomery

We’re nearly halfway through the season so you should have an idea of what kind of fantasy team you have. If you’re at the top of the standings, you’re gearing up for a playoff run. If you’re not, well, it’s time to start unloading. Luckily, FantasyPros has you covered up until the trade deadline. Not only is there the ‘Who Should I Trade?’ tool where you can get instant feedback but every week in this space, we’ll dig even deeper into players that should be moved. There will be the classic one-for-one deals but also deals where multiple pieces would equate to one piece which will be indicated with a ‘-plus’ next to the player’s name. Without further ado, below are some possible trades to make as we ramble on with the 2023 season.

Week 8 Fantasy Football Trade Advice

The Trade: Trevor Lawrence (QB – JAX) for Matthew Stafford (QB – LAR)-plus

The Reasoning: While Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars may be closer to a playoff spot in the NFL Playoffs, Matthew Stafford might be the choice when it comes to your fantasy playoffs.

Lawrence and Jacksonville are where a lot of people predicted they’d be – first place in the AFC South. They’re 5-2 and a top-10 scoring offense behind Lawrence who has thrown for 1,643 yards and run for another 200 on the ground and scored eight times total. All of that has translated to a fringe QB1 fantasy ranking yet when it comes to big games, Lawrence hasn’t had one. He’s thrown for 300-plus yards exactly once this season but it was the same game he only had one touchdown and lost the football twice. He also only has two multi-touchdown games this season, neither of which were for more than two scores each. There are a few reasons this could be. The Jaguars are in the middle of the pack when it comes to pass attempts while they’re near the top of the league in rush attempts with nearly 30 per game. They also have an average-to-above-average receiving corps that has been a relative disappointment this season. Either way, don’t expect Lawrence and the Jaguars to be in any shootouts anytime soon.

For the Rams and Matthew Stafford, the pieces for a productive fantasy season have fallen into place. For starters, Stafford is healthy after missing a lot of the season last year. He’s taken every snap this year and is on pace for over 600 pass attempts this season. He also has a healthy Cooper Kupp back to act as his safety valve on any passing place. Additionally, he has rookie standout Puka Nacua on the other side of the field giving Stafford a second, elite option in the passing game. An argument could be made for Kupp and Nacua to be the best receiving duo in the league right now and for a team that’s tied for sixth in pass attempts per game so far, that duo will be a productive one. By extension, the quarterback tasked with making them productive should also be productive. Yes, Stafford will run into some tough defenses but he and the Rams should also be behind in their fair share of games which means the ball will be flying.

The Trade: Derrick Henry (RB – TEN) for David Montgomery (RB – DET)

The Reasoning: Sadly, we may be nearing the illustrious end of Derrick Henry’s career in Tennessee. After defying Father Time for several seasons, Henry is starting to look like your average NFL running back. Averaging a little over 16 carries per game and ‘just’ 4.3 yards-per-carry, Henry has been ceding snaps and touches to rookie Tyjae Spears all season with the latter seeing almost as many snaps (182) as Henry (199). Henry has now been mentioned in trade rumors as the NFL approaches its trade deadline and probably in your fantasy leagues as well. He’s technically been an RB1 in fantasy scoring but nowhere near the league winner he has been.

Someone who has been getting mentioned as a possible league-winner this season is David Montgomery. He’s scored in every game but one and has almost as many fantasy points as Henry does despite missing two games due to injury. So why would a Montgomery manager give that up? Because said injuries may scare them off for the ‘safer’ play of Henry. Save for one season, Henry has only missed a handful of games throughout his eight-year career despite the massive workload he’s turned in. This deal comes down to philosophy and whether you’re trying to hit a double or a home run.

The Trade: Kyle Pitts (TE – ATL) for Dalton Kincaid (TE – BUF)

The Reasoning: This trade represents two tight ends going in the opposite direction. The saga of Kyle Pitts is well known. The highest-drafted tight end in NFL history has hardly lived up to that title but not necessarily through any fault of his own. For some reason, Atlanta hasn’t fully utilized Pitt’s unique blend of size and strength and has targeted him like an average tight end. At least he’s producing this year after a disastrous sophomore campaign in 2022 that saw him average about three receptions for 35 yards per game before an injury cost him seven games. The numbers have ticked up slightly to an average of five receptions and 60 yards per game but nowhere near the elite level that Pitts managers have been promised over the years.

While Dalton Kincaid may not provide elite production, it’s possible (likely?) that he out-produces Pitts. The rookie tight end was already a significant part of the Bills offense, playing in at least 50% of the offensive snaps in each game he played this season. But now that Dawson Knox will be out with an injury, this is Kincaid’s job. He had a quasi-breakout in Week 7, catching all eight targets for 75 yards, both of which led the team. It’s not a given that Kincaid will replicate that every week but if he can establish himself as a top-two target on the offense, that should lead to TE1 numbers.
