The tight-end position matters greatly in fantasy football. They are not as flashy as their blazing-fast, route-running counterparts at wide receiver. They also do not get the same volume of touches as fantasy-relevant running backs. That can sometimes lead to them being overlooked or treated as an afterthought. Do not make that mistake.
The tight-end pool is the shallowest of them all in terms of fantasy. Finding production there on a weekly basis can be incredibly challenging, especially for those who did not invest in one of the top TE options during their drafts.
How might one find success at the position? Well, one way can be by carefully playing the waiver wire week-to-week. The goal of this weekly article is to help fantasy managers do just that by finding low-rostered (under 75%) TEs in the best situations for that particular week.

Tight End Waiver Wire Options for Week 6
Rostered Percentages based on Yahoo! Leagues as of Oct. 10
Logan Thomas (WAS) at Atlanta Falcons: 16% Rostered
Despite the Commanders’ 20-point loss to Chicago in Week 5, Logan Thomas thrived in the passing game. The veteran TE hauled in nine of 11 targets from QB Sam Howell, gaining 77 yards and scoring his second touchdown of the season.
As a key option in the Washington passing game, Thomas is looking at a tasty matchup against a Falcons defense that has already surrendered three touchdowns to opposing TEs this season. This Atlanta unit is among the worst in the league at defending the position, giving up seven receptions and 62.6 yards per game.
Jonnu Smith (ATL) vs. Washington Commanders: 16% Rostered
On the other side of the upcoming contest in Atlanta, Jonnu Smith simply cannot be ignored any longer. Kyle Pitts is obviously the big name at TE for the Falcons, and he finally hit for fantasy managers in Week 5 (seven receptions for 87 yards). However, Pitts’ output did not come at the expense of Smith’s emergence in the Atlanta offense.
Smith has seen at least six targets while catching at least four passes in each of the last four weeks. He has clicked with young QB Desmond Ridder over the last two games, totaling 12 catches for 162 yards.
Zach Ertz (ARI) at Los Angeles Rams: 50% Rostered
Zach Ertz’s volume in the Arizona passing attack has been a rollercoaster the last three weeks, going from two targets to 10, then back down to four this past Sunday against the Bengals. Though he only recorded two receptions for 10 yards in Week 5, Ertz did score his first touchdown of the season.
Ertz now has 22 catches through five games (4.4 per game). He has a great chance to add to those numbers against a Rams’ defense that has allowed three touchdowns and 64 yards per game to the TE position so far.
Cade Otton (TB) vs. Detroit Lions: 2% Rostered
Cade Otton is definitely a risky, low-floor play for fantasy purposes. Although, before the Buccs’ Week 5 bye, he found the end zone for the first time this season in Week 4 against a Saints’ defense that typically excels at limiting the position. Otton has totaled just 12 receptions for 89 yards overall through four games. Still, he is getting set for not just one but two TE-friendly matchups in Weeks 6 and 7.
The Lions provide the opposition this upcoming Sunday. The Detroit defense has given up more receptions and yards to opposing tight ends than any other unit this season.
