Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamers & Waiver Wire Targets (Week 5)

Fantasy Football Quarterback Streamers & Waiver Wire Targets (Week 5)

Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season is in the books. Hopefully, your team pulled out the victory. However, the only easy win was last week’s win. So, let’s look at the top streaming quarterback options for Week 5.

All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN 1QB leagues and under 25% in superflex leagues.

Streaming Targets in 1QB Leagues

C.J. Stroud (HOU) vs. Atlanta Falcons (30.7% Rostered)

The No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft had a rocky Week 1 performance, throwing zero touchdowns and scoring only 10.2 fantasy points. However, C.J. Stroud has been outstanding over the past three weeks. The former Ohio State signal-caller has averaged 323.3 passing yards, two touchdowns and 21.3 fantasy points per game since Week 2. He had at least 280 passing yards, two touchdowns and 20.6 fantasy points in every contest. More importantly, Stroud had arguably the best game of his career against a talented Pittsburgh Steelers defense in Week 4.

Fantasy players should consider the rookie a streaming option for this week and someone you can add for the rest of the year. He has two talented wide receivers, and the Texans have let him throw the ball 37.8 times a game. Meanwhile, the Falcons have surrendered 1.7 touchdowns and 18.3 fantasy points per game since they faced Bryce Young in Week 1. Furthermore, they have given up at least 16.5 fantasy points to QBs in every contest. Coming off a long flight home from London, expect Atlanta to have trouble slowing down Stroud.

Sam Howell (WAS) vs. Chicago Bears (8.9% Rostered)

Sam Howell was horrific two weeks ago against the Buffalo Bills, getting sacked nine times, throwing four interceptions and scoring less than one fantasy point. However, the second-year quarterback has been solid outside of that awful performance, averaging 263.7 passing yards and 18.7 fantasy points per game. More importantly, he was impressive against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4. Howell completed 70.7% of his pass attempts, a season-high, for nearly 300 yards and 20 fantasy points against the division rivals.

Chicago has only two sacks this season and the second-lowest pass-rushing grade from PFF (55.8). They have been one of the most fantasy-friendly defenses to opposing quarterbacks over the first month. The Bears have allowed quarterbacks to have three passing touchdowns and at least 22.2 fantasy points in all but one game, including two straight. Howell has taken advantage of awful defenses (299 yards, two touchdowns and 21.3 fantasy points against the Denver Broncos in Week 2) and should shred the Bears’ defense Thursday night.

Streaming Targets in Superflex Leagues

Joshua Dobbs (ARI) vs. Cincinnati Bengals (2.1% Rostered)

Last week, Joshua Dobbs accidentally threw the Cardinals under the bus on social media for not having his jersey available in the team’s official shop. The veteran quarterback has played well this season, averaging 16.7 fantasy points per game. Despite landing with the team less than six weeks ago, Dobbs has been outstanding since his rocky Week 1 performance. He has completed 71% of his pass attempts for 227.3 yards and 21.9 fantasy points per game over the past three weeks despite facing two talented defenses.

After totaling 265 passing yards, two touchdowns and 23.4 fantasy points against an elite San Francisco 49ers defense, Dobbs faces a more appealing matchup this week. The Bengals allowed Ryan Tannehill to compete 72% of his pass attempts for 240 yards and a touchdown in Week 4. He likely would have had a second touchdown if Derrick Henry hadn’t stolen a goal-line passing score. More importantly, Cincinnati has surrendered nearly 17 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, giving up 20.7 or more fantasy points twice. Dobbs is a solid bye-week replacement option.

Zach Wilson (NYJ) vs. Denver Broncos (1.9% Rostered)

What Zach Wilson did Sunday night wasn’t a mirage; it really did happen. The former BYU star completed 71.8% of his pass attempts for 245 yards and two touchdowns, scoring 19.2 fantasy points, all far and away season-highs. By comparison, he had only 23 total fantasy points this year entering that contest. While the Jets didn’t get the win over the Kansas City Chiefs, fantasy managers should come away impressed with the third-year quarterback’s production in the game. More importantly, Wilson has the most appealing matchup in the NFL this week.

The Broncos have been a fantasy goldmine for quarterbacks over the past three weeks, giving up 336.7 passing yards, 3.7 touchdowns and 28 fantasy points per game, surrendering at least 21.3 fantasy points in every contest. Justin Fields completed 58% of his pass attempts for 175.3 yards and 13.3 fantasy points per game over the first three weeks. Then he completed 80% of his passes for 335 yards, four touchdowns and 27.9 fantasy points against the Broncos. If that defense can make Fields look like a future Hall-of-Famer, Wilson can put up high-end QB2 numbers against Denver.

Streamer to Avoid

Derek Carr (NO) vs. New England Patriots (17.7% Rostered)

Typically, streaming articles tell you which players to target off the waiver wire. However, I will give one quarterback each week that you should avoid.

New Orleans’ offense hasn’t clicked this year, and, unfortunately, Derek Carr suffered an AC joint sprain in Week 3. Despite reports that he would miss some time, the veteran played in Week 4. However, Carr likely should have taken the game off. He completed 62.2% of his pass attempts for only 127 passing yards and 3.2 fantasy points, a season-low. The veteran was clearly not 100% and struggled to push the ball downfield. Carr averaged only 1.5 air yards per pass attempt and threw 46% of his pass attempts to the running back position.

Unfortunately, Carr likely won’t be much healthier next week, and the veteran has an awful matchup in Week 5 against the Patriots. Despite getting blown out by the Dallas Cowboys, New England only gave up 14.3 fantasy points to Dak Prescott. They have surrendered only 11.4 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, one of the lowest averages in the NFL. The Patriots have held quarterbacks to only three passing touchdowns and fewer than 12.6 fantasy points in all but one game this season. Hopefully, Jameis Winston gets the start because Carr isn’t close to being healthy.
