2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jordan Morgan (OT – Arizona)
6-foot-6 | 320 pounds
Background:
Arizona native who played relatively sparingly in his first two seasons with the Wildcats, totaling just under 250 snaps and four starts over the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined, then took over the full-time starting left tackle role from week two of the 2021 season (eleven starts, five sacks allowed). Started ten games in 2022 before tearing his ACL (one sack allowed), then returned for his fifth year of eligibility in 2023.
Positives:
Comes with essentially three years of starting experience on the blind side and has improved significantly since 2021. A big, well-built tackle who carries his weight very well. One of the smoothest movers at his position in the class. Short-area quickness allows him to get out in space and line up defenders on zone concepts, whether by climbing or flowing laterally. Strong understanding of positioning to wall off defenders on rushing downs. Shows above-average power in his hands to control defenders.
Has pretty pass sets, with effective balance and knee bend, and easily gets depth to defend the edge against speed. Shows very good lateral quickness to mirror and can even block down and recover to defend against twists and stunts. Impressive awareness/alertness to recognize late rushers. Active with his hands and gets good extension to keep defenders out of his pads. Places hands effectively inside to limit penalties. Should be highly effective in the screen game.
Negatives:
Has dealt with injuries, including a torn ACL, so medicals will be important. Has no in-game experience anywhere except left tackle. Occasionally gets flat-footed and falls off of blocks. Doesn’t always drop the earliest anchor on passing downs and looks more comfortable defending against speed rushers than bull-rushers; occasional balance issues crop up when he plays high and lets bigger defenders into his pads. Occasionally commits too much to the speed rush, opening up chances for defenders to work back inside while he struggles to maintain his technique. Temperament is more workmanlike than nasty and doesn’t overwhelm too many opponents in the run game.
Summary:
A tall, long-limbed, and graceful zone-scheme left tackle who shows a strong understanding of positioning in the run game and who possesses the agility and quickness to protect the edge against speed on passing downs. May never be a phone-booth mauler and could improve his pad level and functional strength to anchor better against power, but those should be correctable issues. Despite the depth at tackle in this year’s class, positional value could have him off the board high if his medicals check out.
Projection: Round 1-2
