2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Amarius Mims (OT – Georgia)

With being more than halfway through the College Football season, FantasyPros will be taking a look at early NFL Draft scouting reports before the Combine in March. Here’s a look at Amarius Mims.

2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Amarius Mims (OT – Georgia)

Amarius Mims (OT – Georgia)

6’7″ – 340 lbs.

Background:

Georgia local and five-star recruit who appeared in nine games as a reserve back in 2021 (121 snaps), then all 14 games the following year, with two starts at right tackle and another six games with at least 28 snaps (385 total on the year.) Went into 2023 as the team’s starting right tackle but sustained an ankle injury that required surgery three games into the season.

Positives:

Gargantuan right tackle with a rocked-up frame. Really looks the part and has the functional strength to match. Fires out with explosiveness in the run game and can easily overwhelm opponents in a phone booth, driving them back like blocking sleds; regularly seen working several yards past the line of scrimmage. Has a lot of power in his hands to jolt defenders. Plays the game with toughness and physicality, churning his legs to drive back opponents and working aggressively through the whistle to finish. Easily seals opponents inside when he blocks down. Enough short-area quickness to chip a lineman and get up to disrupt angles at the second level. Works hard to get downfield and lead the way on play designs that call for it, fast in a straight line. Has controlled footwork in his kickslide, with appropriate knee-bend and width. Size and length allow him to protect the edge against speed without compromising his technique. Aggressively fires out his punch when protecting the edge. Gets good extension to keep opponents out of his frame. Drops an easy anchor to stonewall bull-rushers. The team trusted him to work on islands.

Negatives:

Has no in-game experience at any line position other than right tackle, and even that is very limited. Plays with coordination and technique but isn’t the most flexible or graceful tackle. Can play high and coast on his raw power. Occasionally gets too aggressive and plays out over his toes, leading to balance issues. Could be more proactive about scanning/helping when he’s unopposed on passing downs. The ankle will require medical evaluation at the Combine.

Summary:

Certainly one of the rarest talents in this year’s class from a physical/athletic perspective, although at the time of writing, it’s unclear how soon he’ll return from tightrope surgery, which could affect his draft stock. On tape, has the look of a gap-scheme monster in the run game but also looks surprisingly comfortable dealing with speed off the edge. Probably projects best at right tackle, but it’s possible some teams could consider flipping him over to the blind side and trying him there.

Grade: Round 1
