Will Darren Waller Play in Week 1? (2023 Fantasy Football)

Week 1 is finally here! Unfortunately, the injury watch for fantasy managers is also here. Players who appear on the Friday injury report and haven’t practiced much during the week can often lead to trepidation for managers trying to make lineup decisions and/or waiver claims. Don’t fret, though – FantasyPros is here to provide you with all of the latest news and updates on the players who are questionable heading into the weekend.

Darren Waller was set to make his debut with the Giants before popping up on the injury report on Friday with a hamstring issue. How serious is it? Will Waller play in New York’s opening game against their intradivisional rivals from Dallas? Here’s what we know.

Darren Waller’s hamstring injury not believed to be serious

Darren Waller’s hamstring injury is not believed to be serious, according to Jeremy Fowler.

Fantasy Impact

Waller will be monitored throughout the weekend, with hopes that the tight end will be able to suit up in the Week 1 Sunday night matchup between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. Waller was plagued by hamstring issues last season for the Las Vegas Raiders, missing extensive time during the 2022 season. If cleared to play, Waller will give quarterback Daniel Jones a versatile pass-catching option all over the field.

What the Experts Are Saying

TBD. Lean towards playing. Late-week additions to the injury report = poor outlook in the data, but comments suggest mild severity. If active, expect low-performance impact, but due to his extensive soft tissue history, he is a very high injury risk for the rest of the year.

-Dr. Deepak Chona

If he can stay healthy, Waller can be a league winner in 2023. He’s the de facto WR for the Giants and is the favorite to lead the team in targets. The IF (all caps) here is whether or not he can stay healthy. Injuries have been a problem throughout Waller’s career, and he has played in just 20 games over the last two seasons. If you drafted Waller, you likely drafted him as your TE1, so start him as such in Week 1 against the Cowboys. And in DFS, he’s significantly cheaper than Travis Kelce (if he plays at all), Mark Andrews and T.J. Hockenson this week.
