Russell Wilson, Broncos starters to play preseason opener

According to Nick Shook of nfl.com, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that QB Russell Wilson and the other Denver starters are expected to play in their preseason opener on Friday.

Fantasy Impact

Wilson did not participate in the Broncos’ 2022 preseason games, a season which ended in disappointment as the pairing of Wilson and head coach Nathaniel Hackett fizzled out in a 5-12 failure. Payton has made many comments to the media regarding his distaste for how the previous regime operated in Denver and how he plans to rectify his own rule and build everything back up from the ground floor. Part of this process is the player’s playing in the preseason so they can get used to the new system and get reacquainted with the live-game feel. Wilson, and the other starters, likely won’t be out for long to avoid injuries, but it’s an important sign of the changing of the guard in Denver.

Lamar Jackson, Ravens QBs struggle in Saturday practice

According to Jamison Hensley of ESPN, QB Lamar Jackson and the other Baltimore Ravens QBs struggled in Saturday’s practice throwing a combined nine interceptions, four for Jackson.

Fantasy Impact

According to team writer Kyle Barber, TE Isaiah Likely shared that the team was practicing third-and-long situations, which resulted in a higher volume of interceptions. Some could take this as a negative sign for Jackson as the team trends toward a more pass-happy system in 2023, but it can also be interpreted as a positive sign for the defense. The Ravens’ secondary is thinner in 2023 than in past seasons, and the defense was league average in interceptions forced. They also only forced three interceptions on third downs the entire 2022 season. Given the right context, this report isn’t anything to worry about and should not warrant any overreactions about Baltimore’s offense in 2023.
