Injury News

Cooper Kupp upgraded to day-to-day

Cooper Kupp (hamstring) is being called day-to-day, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Impact

Kupp suffered a hamstring injury in practice on Tuesday, but according to offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, the wideout will be “back in the right time” and is “going through the rehab process”. It appears that Kupp will be back to 100% well before the Rams kick off the 2023 season in Week 1 against the Seahawks.

Logan Thomas dealing with calf strain

Logan Thomas reportedly has a calf strain.

Fantasy Impact

The Commanders are expected to be cautious with the injury this early in camp for Thomas. With Curtis Hodges also dealing with a hamstring injury, John Bates and Cole Turner could earn more reps at the tight end position for the Commanders.

Parris Campbell returns to practice Friday

Parris Campbell returned to Giants practice on Friday following a rest day on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

Campbell signed a one-year deal with the Giants this offseason. He could benefit from a change of scenery after struggling to stay healthy for the most part with the Colts. It is tough to imagine him being super fantasy relevant in most traditional leagues.

Rashod Bateman could be back ‘pretty soon,’ per Harbaugh

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that WR Rashod Bateman is doing a “really good job” and that there’s a “chance he’ll be out there pretty soon.”

Fantasy Impact

Bateman was placed on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from his foot surgery. He has not been practicing, and Harbaugh declined to give a timeline. Bateman, a first-round pick in 2021, has struggled to stay on the field in his two-year career, playing just 18 games. The Minnesota product has just 800 career receiving yards to his name and will now need to compete with veteran WR Odell Beckham Jr. and rookie WR Zay Flowers for targets and the WR1 role, who have reportedly stood out in camp and separated themselves as the lead receivers. His volatility as a fantasy asset is mirrored in his WR51 price tag, the lowest among all Ravens WRs. He will likely be a safer best ball WR than re-draft in 2023.

Rookie Watch

Sam LaPorta ‘always with the starters’ in practice

Sam LaPorta is reportedly continuing to see first-team reps in Lions camp.

Fantasy Impact

Following the trade of T.J. Hockenson last season, the Lions never had a consistent producer at tight end the rest of that year. It sounds like it could be LaPorta this season, though you always want to be a bit cautious with rookie tight ends from a fantasy football perspective. Nonetheless, LaPorta will be someone to continue to monitor.

Luke Musgrave is said to be the fastest man in Packers’ camp

Packers’ head coach Matt LaFleur shared in an interview that TE Luke Musgrave is “the biggest fast guy I’ve ever seen.”

Fantasy Impact

Musgrave is likely going to enter the 2023 season as the Week 1 starter at tight end for the Packers. The rookie was earning first-team reps in OTAs and continues to impress in training camp. Musgrave currently sits at TE37 in ECR, according to FantasyPros.

Jalin Hyatt continues to stand out in Giants camp

Jalin Hyatt reportedly continues to stand out in Giants camp.

Fantasy Impact

Hyatt had a couple of impressive catches from Daniel Jones on Thursday in practice. “He’s doing a nice job,” Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said. “He’s doing a nice job in the classroom, studying, prepping, making sure he’s prepared for practice. On the field, he’s working, and working through all the fundamentals and techniques that we want him to work through.” The Giants wide receiver room is quite crowded, but Hyatt has the potential to stand out above the rest if he can continue to impress in camp.

NFL Training Camp Notes

David Montgomery expected to be ‘co-starter’ with Jahmyr Gibbs

David Montgomery is reportedly expected to be a “co-starter” with Jahmyr Gibbs in the Lions backfield this season.

Fantasy Impact

The Lions signed Montgomery to a three-year deal and invested the No. 12 overall pick on Gibbs, so it should be expected that they will both be involved. It has the potential to be comparable to be the Saints backfield during Alvin Kamara‘s rookie season when he (Gibbs) and Mark Ingram (Montgomery) were both dominant in their own roles in the same backfield.

Jake Ferguson excelling as a blocker in practice

Jake Ferguson is reportedly excelling as a blocker early in Cowboys practice.

Fantasy Impact

With the departure of Dalton Schultz, Ferguson has a chance to take over the primary receiving role among tight ends for the Cowboys this season. The better he can block, the more he should be on the field as well. Ferguson could be an intriguing late target in deep fantasy leagues this season.

Jalen Hurts building ‘new chemistry’ with A.J. Brown

Jalen Hurts is reportedly building “new chemistry” with A.J. Brown in Eagles camp.

Fantasy Impact

It is hard to imagine Hurts and Brown topping the season they had together last year, but this will be their second season playing together. Brown caught 88 passes for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns last season with Hurts. “He’s a physical specimen,” Hurts said. “He’s a special talent. The goal for us is to continue to grow, continue to find that new chemistry. I think for us, you talk about any time you have success, you try to leave that as the foundation, as the new standard. So we just want to continue to grow.”

Cole Beasley working as No. 1 slot WR in practice

Cole Beasley is reportedly working as the Giants top slot receiver in practices.

Fantasy Impact

It figures to be between Beasley and Parris Campbell (who was sidelined Thursday, but returned on Friday) for the slot role in the Giants offense. This will be a potential training camp battle to watch, though neither of them offer too much fantasy upside.

Braxton Berrios considered Dolphins’ WR3 in camp

According to both Kyle Crabbs of Locked On Dolphins and Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN NFL Nation, WR Braxton Berrios has appeared to be the Miami Dolphins’ WR3 so far in training camp.

Fantasy Impact

Berrios was signed to a one-year deal in the offseason, similar to WR Robbie Chosen, but appears to have the lead in the race for WR3 in Miami. The 27-year-old WR spent his first four seasons with the Jets where he had 1,245 scrimmage yards and nine total touchdowns. Though he primarily operated as a slot receiver, he also lined up outside on nearly a third of his snaps in 2022 and was used as a gadget WR on screens and sweeps. In Miami, Berrios can find favorable matchups and schemed-up touches due to the attention that WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle force. Berrios could be a sneaky late-round pick in best ball formats due to his potential for boom weeks on a potent Miami offense.

Alvin Kamara suspended three games by NFL

The NFL is suspending Saints RB Alvin Kamara three games for his role in a fight outside a Las Vegas nightclub in 2022, according to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. Kamara met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this week.

Fantasy Impact

Well, at least now fantasy managers finally know exactly what they’re getting when drafting Kamara. For much of the summer, he was a major question mark, and the lack of clarity surrounding his status affected his ADP and FantasyPros ECR. He is currently 78th overall and RB29 in ECR, but he is likely to jump into mid-RB2 range now that we know the suspension is only three games. Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller will have additional appeal through the first three weeks, and Williams will likely still be valuable in most formats given his short-yardage and red zone role (he’s the guy who scored 17 touchdowns for the Lions last season).
