Injury News

Javonte Williams (knee) not being limited with reps in camp

Javonte Williams has taken the majority of reps so far in Broncos training camp.

Fantasy Impact

Williams noted it has been the coaching staff that has wanted to hold him back, but he hasn’t been limited so far according to reports after being cleared to practice in pads. Williams also mentioned he will get the day off on Wednesday as players returning from ACL injuries practice two days in full pads and get the third day off. It is always tough with running backs coming off torn ACLs as Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles are the only running backs to post huge seasons the year after in recent history. With that being said, Williams seems to be ahead of schedule in his recovery and could be close to full strength by Week 1.

Cooper Kupp suffers a hamstring injury Tuesday

Cooper Kupp reportedly suffered a hamstring injury in practice on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact

It is never great when any player suffers a hamstring injury. Kupp was able to walk off the field with medical staff during Tuesday’s practice, but the team was not currently able to share a timetable for his return. It is safe to say the Rams will be super cautious with Kupp and not rush him back, especially this early in training camp. For now, Kupp’s status for Week 1 should not be in danger but that could change if he is still impacted by the hamstring injury in the next couple of weeks.

Alexander Mattison didn’t finish practice with apparent injury

According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN, Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison got off the practice field early and watched the remainder of practice before entering the locker room. Some reports suggest he limped with an apparent leg injury.

Fantasy Impact

Mattison is expected to be the Vikings’ featured back in 2023 after the team cut long-time starter Dalvin Cook this offseason. Mattison has shown an ability to be a starting back in short stints: in six career starts, he averages 79.5 yards per game on 4.1 yards per carry for 0.5 a touchdown. The hope is that he can be healthy enough for a full season’s workload. His increased role has given him a half-PPR average draft price of RB23.

Tim Patrick out for season with torn Achilles

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Denver Broncos WR Tim Patrick was confirmed to have a torn Achilles by head coach Sean Payton, effectively ending his season.

Fantasy Impact

Patrick missed the 2022 campaign due to a torn ACL that cost him a season. Now, for the second season in a row, a preseason injury has taken away a year for Patrick. Before injury, Patrick had consecutive seasons of at least 50 catches, 700 yards and five touchdowns. Patrick will be 30 during the 2024 season and removed from two major injuries, making the likelihood of him returning to fantasy relevance unfortunately low.

Michael Thomas: ‘moving toward 100%’

Michael Thomas is “addicted to perfection,” as he tries to return to his former All-Pro self. The 2019 OPOY is still trying to return to his former self.

Fantasy Impact

After leading the NFL in catches in both 2018 and 2019, Thomas has been dealing with injuries that have forced him to miss all but 10 games over the past three seasons. Thomas missed most of last season with a toe injury, and it is fair to wonder whether the now 30-year-old is washed up. However, the talent Thomas possesses speaks for itself, and with Derek Carr in New Orleans if Thomas can stay on the field there should be ample opportunities for him, especially considering the uncertainty around Alvin Kamara in the run game. Thomas is a high-upside gamble of a pick in redraft formats with a slight boost in PPR given his past success as a catch machine.

Calijah Kancey, strained calf, expected to miss four weeks

Calijah Kancey, who the Bucs’ selected with their first-round pick, suffered a strained calf and is expected to miss four weeks, per Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Impact

The Bucs selected Kancey with the 19th pick in this year’s draft and the Northwestern DT may be forced to miss some time in his rookie season. Still, a four-week diagnosis does give the youngster a chance to suit up in Week 1 when the Bucs take on the Vikings. Kancey is an athletic DT who should fit well in the Bucs’ pass rush. Kancey boasts impressive speed for a big man, clocking in a 4.67 40-yard dash. Hopefully, he recovers quickly as the Bucs look to stay afloat, post-Brady.

Tank Bigsby impressing in short yardage situations

Tank Bigsby is excelling in short-yardage situations at training camp. He is showing impressive acceleration and ability to hit the hole with power in red zone drills.

Fantasy Impact

Jacksonville drafted Bigsby with the hope he could complement starter Travis Etienne, with Bigsby as the hammer to Etienne’s speed. So far, the Jaguars look to have hit the jackpot. Bigsby appears to be a capable backup with potential every-week flex appeal if he gets between 9-12 touches per week.

Will Levis will continue working with the 2s

Will Levis will continue to work with the 2s from time to time, according to head coach Mike Vrabel. Levis has had success against the third team in recent practices but it doesn’t appear he will be moved up to the second team full-time.

Fantasy Impact

Levis got off to a bad start this year, with early reports claiming he was struggling mightily and did not look close to NFL-ready. While it’s unrealistic to expect a rookie to come in guns blazing, it’s not what you want to hear about a player who was projected to be a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. But Levis has made improvements and depending on how things go in Tennessee this year we may see him get a start or two before the season’s end.
