Injury News

Kadarius Toney still dealing with knee injury

Kadarius Toney is still dealing with a knee injury, but the 24-year-old first-round selection is expected to be back on the field soon.

Fantasy Impact

Toney played a key role in Super Bowl 57 this past year. He came in around Week 11, and in seven games, he played and caught two touchdowns with 170+ yards to go along with it. He is expected to be the WR1 on the Chiefs this year, and he is worth a late-round selection, but don’t expect Tyreek Hill numbers.

Kendre Miller back at practice on Thursday

Kendre Miller returned to practice on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

Miller is dealing with a knee sprain in his surgically repaired right knee. He was originally thought to return around week 1 of the regular season, but reports came out this week that he had a chance to play Sunday in New Orleans preseason game. His appearance in practice on Thursday boosts his chances to return sooner rather than later.

Noah Fant enters season fully healthy

Noah Fant comes into a make-or-break season with the Seahawks. The former first-round pick in Denver the 25-year-old TE hopes to turn his career around in Seattle this year.

Fantasy Impact

Fant, a little undersized at 6’4 250lbs, makes up for it by displaying clean route running and good hands. Assuming he is still available in later rounds take a flier pick on him. He is the TE1 in that organization and hopefully will improve and see more volume. Expect him to be a huge safety net for Geno Smith.

Kenneth Walker III logs first full practice since injury

Seattle Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III logged his first practice as a full participant since returning from injury.

Fantasy Impact

Walker returned to practice on Saturday after being out since July 27, but he only took part in solo drills and not team drills. On Thursday, though, he returned to team drills. Despite this progress, it would still be unlikely to see Walker participate in the Seahawks’ preseason contests so they can focus on getting him ramped up for the regular season. Walker ran for 1,050 yards and nine touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry as a rookie, finishing second in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race. Despite the offseason addition of rookie RB Zach Charbonnet, Walker should still have a strong Year 2, though he may concede usage on third downs and obvious passing situations. He’s going on average as the half-PPR RB16.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) to return next week

Amon-Ra St. Brown (ankle) is expected to return to the field between Monday and Friday of next week.

Fantasy Impact

St. Brown suffered an ankle injury during Wednesday’s practice, but it is being described as a small injury and shouldn’t be an issue for much longer. St.Brown is poised for a big year in his third NFL season after putting up 1161 yards and 6 TDs in 2022.

Jameson Williams (hamstring) likely out for preseason

Jameson Williams has a hamstring injury that will likely keep him out for the rest of the preseason.

Fantasy Impact

Williams left Wednesday’s practice with an injury, and now we know that it will keep him out for an extended period. He is suspended for the first six games of the season, so this injury shouldn’t have any impact on when he can return to the field, but this is still a situation worth monitoring as he makes his recovery.

Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) sidelined a few weeks

Terrace Marshall Jr. will be sidelined for a few weeks after tweaking his back in practice.

Fantasy Impact

Marshall has been the WR3-4 in Carolina for the majority of his career. Expect him to be back before the start of the season and possibly the WR2 behind Adam Thielen. Marshall is a draft and stash player; he could make the jump into flex play this year, so keep tabs on him.

Training Camp News

Joe Mixon found not guilty of aggravated menacing

According to Ben Baby of ESPN, Cincinnati Bengals RB Joe Mixon was found not guilty of aggravated menacing from a road rage incident in January.

Fantasy Impact

This result gives Mixon’s status for the Bengals more stability in the short term, though his legal battles are not completely finished. Mixon still has a separate ongoing case in regard to a shooting at his residence that took place in March, where Mixon is not a suspect. The league conducts its own research in legal matters and the results of these cases may differ from league punishments, but for now, the assumption is that Mixon won’t face any upcoming suspension to start the 2023 NFL season.

Dalvin Cook, Saleh unconcerned over potential suspension

New York Jets RB Dalvin Cook said Thursday that he has heard nothing from the league in regard to a potential suspension, and head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that he was not concerned about it.

Fantasy Impact

Cook has an active dueling lawsuit dating back to 2021 in regard to a domestic violence case with claims going both ways. The situation has not yet been resolved legally, and the league typically tends to wait until situations are resolved before dealing out punishments, though they are not required to do so. Neither Cook nor Saleh seems concerned about the possibility of a suspension coming out of the situation, so expectations are that Cook, who just got to camp, should be good for the start of the season.

Sam Howell not yet named Week 1 starter

Sam Howell has not yet been named the Week 1 starter of the Commanders.

Fantasy Impact

Coach Ron Rivera was non-committal when asked about who would start Week 1, praising both Howell and Jacoby Brissett on their work at camp. It is still likely that Howell will be under center at the start of the season, but this is a situation that is still worth keeping an eye on until it is official.

Marvin Mims Jr. will play Saturday after ‘good week’

According to Chris Thomasson of the Denver Gazette, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said rookie WR Marvin Mims Jr. has had a good week of practice and will play Saturday now that he is healthy.

Fantasy Impact

The Broncos’ unofficial depth chart had Mims listed as one of its first four WRs and starting returner. However, Mims was not present during the preseason opener, missing due to an offseason injury. With him healthy, the key item to watch out for is whether he starts at WR3 over Marquez Callaway, who was in the starting lineup last weekend.

Luke Musgrave: Packers aren’t hiding big plans for rookie TE

Luke Musgrave has been anything but short of spectacular thus far in camp. The rookie TE has shown a lot of flashes so far.

Fantasy Impact

Luke Musgrave comes into this offense new like everyone else. This is a whole new year for the Packers offense. Musgrave has been receiving praise after praise from teammates and coaches. He has already developed a very good connection with Jordan Love and he is only going off as the TE35 in drafts. Expect him to finish as a top-15 even top-20 TE by the end of the year.

C.J. Stroud named starter for second preseason contest

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, rookie QB C.J. Stroud was named the team’s starter for their second preseason game by head coach DeMeco Ryans.

Fantasy Impact

Stroud had a somewhat disappointing preseason debut, completing two of his four passes and throwing an early interception. However, that’s no reason to hit the panic button early on in his career, as the whole point of preseason is to help players get experience and see what they can do. Stroud will get another start over Davis Mills, and it remains to be seen if he will get more than just four pass attempts to help him get a rhythm on the field.

Roschon Johnson continues to see work with the 1s

According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN, rookie RB Roschon Johnson has continued to see work with the Bears’ first team in practice, impressing as a pass blocker.

Fantasy Impact

In the first week of preseason, RB Khalil Herbert was the exclusive back to operate with the first team, though they didn’t play many snaps as a result of a pair of long touchdowns. Johnson didn’t play until later in the game, and while his numbers weren’t eye-popping, his hard-nosed running style was evident and promising. There’s plenty of public optimism that Johnson could assert himself into the lineup early in his career as a third-down back due to his ability as a blocker and pass catcher, and some think he can parlay it into a full-time role. Regardless, he’s seeing increased work in practice after his preseason debut performance and an eye should be kept out for his role in the offense in the second preseason game to see when he plays.
