Underdog Fantasy MLB Pick ‘Em Predictions: Tuesday (7/4)

Baseball is scheduled throughout the day. As a result, there are only a few night contests to choose player props from in the Underdog Fantasy pick ’em lobby. Still, the following four choices stood out as exciting picks.

Tuesday’s Top Underdog Fantasy MLB Pick ‘Em Picks

Myles Straw: 0.5 Singles – Lower

Admittedly, it’s not easy to click the lower for Straw’s prop when looking at only his recent performances. The speedy outfielder is on a six-game hitting streak. However, the bigger picture is less flattering for Straw.

According to FanGraphs, Straw has only 15 singles in 40 games against a lefty this year. He also has just a .257 batting average against them in 76 plate appearances this season and a .241 batting average against lefties in 490 plate appearances in his career.

Additionally, while Kolby Allard has allowed a .263 batting average to righties in his big-league career, 65 of the hits he’s allowed to 761 righties have gone for extra bases. So, he’s allowed a single in just 16.8% of the remaining 696 plate appearances against righties. Finally, Straw typically bats in the seventh, eighth or ninth spot in the order. Thus, he’ll have fewer opportunities to record a single than if he batted near the top of the order.

Luis Ortiz: 88.5 Pitches – Lower

On the surface, this prop appears to be a coin flip. Ortiz has pitched in 10 games (nine starts) and gone under 88.5 pitches five times. Interestingly, he went over in his only relief appearance.

The scale tilts toward taking lower for 88.5 pitches when considering the matchup, though. The Dodgers are a fearsome foe. The Dodgers are tied for fifth in wRC+ (110) against righties this year. Los Angeles is 12th in wRC+ (106) in the previous 14 days. And LA is fifth in wRC+ (116) at home. So, the Dodgers can rough Ortiz up and chase him early, preventing him from exceeding 88.5 pitches.

Jason Delay: 0.5 Hits – Lower

I’m taking the under on 0.5 hits for a Pittsburgh catcher for the third consecutive Underdog Pick’ Em Predictions piece. This time, it’s Delay’s lower prop. The right-handed-hitting catcher has just a .222 batting average and 14 hits in 70 plate appearances and 28 games against a righty this year. And in 166 plate appearances and 73 games against a righty since reaching the majors last year, he has had only a .204 batting average and 31 hits. In 42 starts, he has recorded a hit in only 16 games. Finally, Emmet Sheehan has held 36 righties to six hits and a .182 batting average in his rookie campaign.

Freddie Freeman: 1.5 Total Bases – Higher

Freeman crushes righties, and Ortiz has no answers for lefties. It’s a match made in heaven for Freeman to have higher than 1.5 total bases tonight. The 33-year-old sweet-swinging lefty has 21 doubles, one triple, five homers, a .321 batting average, .483 SLG, and .162 ISO in 276 plate appearances against righties this year.

Conversely, Ortiz has been destroyed by lefties. The 24-year-old righty has coughed up five doubles, five homers, a .384 batting average and .616 SLG to 104 left-handed batters in 2023. So, Freeman should eclipse his prop for 1.5 total bases.
