Fantasy Baseball Injury Roundup: Trevor Story, Jeremy Pena, Clayton Kershaw (2023)

Good morning, fantasy baseball managers! It’s a brand new week, and, as always, we’re here with the latest injury updates to help you make the most informed decisions for your team. Let’s take a look at the most recent news.

Fantasy Baseball Injury Roundup – July 3, 2023

Trevor Story (2B – BOS)

Good news for Story managers, he is scheduled to take live batting practice on Tuesday against John Schreiber. Although Red Sox manager Alex Cora hasn’t established a clear timetable for his return, this development indicates progress, and Story’s return might be on the horizon.

Garrett Whitlock (SP, RP – BOS)

Whitlock is slated for an MRI on Monday, following his early exit from Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays due to tightness in his right elbow. If you recall, he was on the IL in May for a similar issue. It would be prudent for fantasy managers to prepare for his absence until after the All-Star break.

Clayton Kershaw (SP – LAD)

Kershaw’s left shoulder inflammation might land him on the IL on Monday. If he’s unable to make his rotation spot, Michael Grove is expected to take the start in his place. Monitor this situation closely for updates.

Isaac Paredes (1B, 2B, 3B – TB)

Paredes suffered an injury in Sunday’s game against Seattle following a collision. He was escorted off the field by the Rays’ training staff. Consider him day-to-day, for now, pending further updates.

Yordan Alvarez (OF – HOU)

Alvarez, sidelined due to an oblique injury, has begun batting practice at about 60% intensity. His return to the Astros’ starting lineup could be soon after the All-Star break if there are no setbacks.

Riley Greene (OF – DET)

Greene might be starting a rehab assignment within the next few days, as per the Tigers. He appears to be on track to return to the lineup shortly after the All-Star break, assuming his rehab games go well.

mlb

Jeremy Pena (SS – HOU)

Pena continues to be a day-to-day case, receiving treatment for his neck. While he’s out of the lineup again on Sunday, Astros haven’t discussed an IL stint for Pena, giving hope for his return within the week.

Carlos Rodon (SP – NYY)

The much-awaited season debut for Carlos Rodon is now slated for Friday against the Cubs, as per Yankees manager Aaron Boone. This is good news for Rodon owners, so be ready to set your lineups.

Austin Hays (OF – BAL)

Hays left Sunday’s game against the Twins early due to a left hip contusion following a collision with Donovan Solano. We should expect a further update on his status soon.

Royce Lewis (SS – MIN)

Lewis has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a left oblique strain. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Jose Miranda, who was called up in a corresponding move and is starting at third base Sunday.

MacKenzie Gore (SP – WAS)

Gore was pulled early from his start against the Phillies due to an apparent injury. Charged with seven runs across 2 2/3 innings, his performance and injury status should be closely monitored.

Julio Urias (SP – LAD)

The Dodgers have activated Urias off the 15-day injured list as of Saturday. He’s been sidelined since mid-May with a left hamstring strain. This could be a boon for fantasy managers needing a pitching boost.

Framber Valdez (SP – HOU)

The Houston Astros scratched Framber Valdez from his scheduled start against the Rangers due to a sprained ankle. The injury happened during his start against the Mets and has since worsened. It sounds like the Astros are being careful with Valdez, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he lands on the injured list.

Shane McClanahan (SP – TB)

Shane McClanahan of the Tampa Bay Rays landed on the 15-day IL on Saturday due to mid-back tightness. McClanahan only lasted three innings in his start on Friday against Seattle. The 26-year-old will need some time to recover from his back injury, and more details about his rehab should be provided as we get closer to the end of his IL stint.

Brandon Woodruff (SP – MIL)

In Milwaukee, Brandon Woodruff’s next bullpen session has been postponed, as his recovery is not going as well as the Brewers would have liked. Brewers manager Craig Counsell described the situation as being “cautious,” and they hope to have him back on the mound early on their next homestand. There is currently no clear timetable for Woodruff’s return.

Michael Conforto (OF – SF)

Over in New York, Michael Conforto continues to sit out due to left hamstring tightness. He was not in the Giants’ starting lineup on Saturday against the Mets, marking his third straight absence. Joc Pederson started in right field in his stead.

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – DET)

Finally, some positive news: Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to return to the Tigers’ rotation on Wednesday against the Athletics. Rodriguez, who has been sidelined since the end of May, most recently threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his last rehab start. If the Tigers decide to sell, he could potentially headline the starters trade market.

That’s all for this week’s MLB Injury Roundup. Remember to keep an eye on the updates and adjust your lineups accordingly. It’s a long season, managers, and every decision can make a huge difference. Until next week, stay safe and keep swinging for the fences!
