News and Notes
The first notable trade that went down, including relievers, involved the Colorado Rockies sending Pierce Johnson to the Braves. After Johnson saw save chances earlier in the season, it has mostly been a committee in the Rockies bullpen, and it should remain that way with Justin Lawrence having the edge for save chances. In Atlanta, Johnson should have a role in the middle innings out of the Braves’ bullpen.
Another intriguing trade involved the Twins sending Jorge Lopez to the Marlins in exchange for Dylan Floro. It was a trade between two struggling relievers looking to regain their form on new teams.
The Marlins also acquired David Robertson from the Mets late Thursday night.
It is tough to know who is the closer right now for the Marlins. A.J. Puk, along with Robertson, Lopez and Tanner Scott, could all be in the mix. Puk likely has a slight edge right now, but it will be a situation to monitor.
In Minnesota, Jhoan Duran will remain the closer for the Twins, though it was notable he did not make an appearance in the last series against the Mariners when there were save opportunities. Floro should have a role in the middle innings out of the Twins bullpen.
There were a couple of other minor trades that involved relievers, including the White Sox trading Reynaldo Lopez to the Angels (as part of the Lucas Giolito trade) and the Blue Jays trading Trent Thornton to the Mariners as a depth reliever.
We are still a few days away from the trade deadline, and names like David Bednar and Paul Sewald remain in a number of rumors.
