Rookie Watch
Bryce Young announced as Panthers’ ‘QB1’
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich confirmed that top-pick rookie QB Bryce Young is the team’s “QB1.”
Fantasy Impact
This was fully expected to be the truth eventually, but it was uncertain if Young would start Week 1 or if Andy Dalton would see the field first. Young will get the chance to develop on the field early in his career as the Panthers enter a new phase for the franchise. Dalton will play the backup QB role. Young’s average draft position is QB19.

Jalin Hyatt exits practice late Wednesday
New York Giants rookie WR Jalin Hyatt‘s exited late in practice on Wednesday due to a heat-related issue.
Fantasy Impact
This is something to monitor as training camp progresses, but it doesn’t seem too serious right now.

Anthony Richardson works with second team Wednesday
First-round rookie QB Anthony Richardson ran with the second-team offense on Day 1 of the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp on Wednesday.
Fantasy Impact
Richardson, only a one-season starter at QB for the Florida Gators, is still relatively inexperienced at the position compared to his 2023 NFL Draft contemporaries. As a result, the Colts may take it slower with Richardson, a toolsy, high-upside quarterback, to avoid building any bad habits early in his career. Richardson’s athleticism and size will make him a dual threat when he does get on the field. He is going on average as the QB1 in fantasy rookie drafts.

Marvin Mims suffers injury while training prior to camp
Marvin Mims suffered an injury while training ahead of training camp, but should be a full-go in four-to-five days, per Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton.
Fantasy Impact
Mims has a chance to carve out a role in three wide receiver sets if he is able to develop chemistry with Russell Wilson. While there was no specifics given on the nature of the injury, it appears the 21-year-old rookie will not miss to much time at the start of training camp.

Training Camp Injury Updates
Noah Fant placed on the PUP list
The Seahawks placed Noah Fant on the active/physically unable to perform list Wednesday.
Fantasy Impact
The exact injury Fant is dealing with is unknown, but he can be activated at any point during training camp. He caught 50 passes for 486 yards and four touchdowns with Seattle last year.

Zach Ertz to begin training camp on PUP
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, veteran TE Zach Ertz will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list for the Arizona Cardinals.
Fantasy Impact
Ertz suffered a knee injury that halted his 2022 campaign after just 10 games. Ertz had 406 yards and four scores in his Age-32 season. As Ertz gets older, second-year TE Trey McBride is expected to step up for Arizona, and if Ertz misses time to start the year, McBride could see increased work in 2023.

Darnell Mooney had tightrope surgery on left ankle
Darnell Mooney underwent tightrope surgery and had screws put in his ankle after suffering the injury last November.
Fantasy Impact
Mooney has been cleared to begin practicing in camp, but will reportedly be monitored to ensure they are not overworking him and his surgically repaired ankle. The 25-year-old will have to work for his target share this season with the addition of D.J. Moore and Chase Claypool being present for his first full season with the Bears.

Tony Pollard to ease back into practicing at the start of camp
Tony Pollard is not pushing things with his recovering fibula, as he is “easing back into it.” He is working with Cowboys trainers to ensure he does not push himself too much, too soon.
Fantasy Impact
Pollard will be taking over the Cowboys’ backfield in 2023 with Zeke Elliott finally out of the equation. The explosive Memphis RB has shown flashes of RB1 potential in the few opportunities he has been given in his career to start. The fact that he is being eased into the fold should not be surprising, and that he is practicing at all is a great sign for his regular-season health. Time will tell if Pollard sees any preseason action, but regardless he should be considered an RB1 when the regular season roles around, barring any setbacks.
Sammy Schulman
Kyler Murray (knee) placed on the PUP list
Kyler Murray (knee) has been placed on the PUP list to begin training camp.
Fantasy Impact
The move does not come as a surprise considering Murray suffered a torn ACL in December. Murray will likely be unavailable to start the season despite setting a goal in the offseason of returning in Week 1. If the 25-year-old can return to form, he will continue to be a difference maker for fantasy managers.

Kyle Pitts beings training camp with a knee brace on
Kyle Pitts is participating in Falcons’ training camp with a knee brace on.
Fantasy Impact
The news is not a surprise as Pitts continues to recover from MCL surgery. Pitts did not practice in OTAs, so this is a great sign for the Falcons and fantasy managers. The 22-year-old currently ranks as the TE5 in ECR, according to FantasyPros.

John Metchie III cleared to start training camp
John Metchie III has been cleared to participate in training camp, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Fantasy Impact
Metchie suffered a strained hamstring during OTAs and there was concern that he would not be ready for training camp. The 23-year-old wide receiver now has a chance to build chemistry with rookie C.J. Stroud in camp. Metchie currently ranks as WR77 in ECR, according to FantasyPros.

Training Camp News & Notes
Kyle Trask‘s leadership praised by Todd Bowles
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles praised Kyle Trask‘s leadership abilities Wednesday, mentioning the importance of a QB being vocal on the field and how Trask fulfills that need.
Fantasy Impact
Trask is competing for the starting QB job with veteran Baker Mayfield, so any praise from the coaching staff could work to his advantage. At this time, fantasy managers don’t appear to have confidence in either being a fantasy asset with Trask and Mayfield being drafted as the QB35 and QB33, respectively, according to FantasyPros consensus ADP.

Aaron Rodgers agrees to new two-year deal with the Jets
The Jets signed Aaron Rodgers to a new two-year, $75 million guaranteed contract through the 2024 season.
Fantasy Impact
Rodgers had nearly $110M guaranteed remaining on his old deal in Green Bay. He is taking a bit less money to open up some cap space for the Jets with this new deal.

Trey Lance first in 49ers QB rotation
Trey Lance was first in the 49ers’ rotation of QBs in practice today. The other two quarterbacks who rotated reps with Lance were Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen.
Fantasy Impact
While it’s nice to see the 49ers give Lance the first shot at practice, it should be noted that Brock Purdy wasn’t at practice today. San Fransisco is managing Purdy’s pre-season workload as he recovers from an elbow injury he suffered in the NFC Championship game. Purdy is still the favorite to enter week 1 as the team’s starter, but the 49ers have invested a lot into Lance. If he impresses during camp, it’s possible he gets a second chance to take the helm as starting quarterback of the offense. Until we get more clarification on Purdy’s injury and the quarterback battle, this situation will remain murky.
Garrett Ball
Tee Higgins practicing despite desire for new contract
Bengals WR Tee Higgins is at practice on Wednesday and participating despite no contract extension yet.
Fantasy Impact
Higgins is entering the final year of his deal with the Bengals. It is a situation worth monitoring to see if the two sides can come to an agreement on a new contract soon, but it appears Higgins will continue to practice either way.

D’Andre Swift used primarily as a pass catcher Wednesday
According to Tim McManus of ESPN, despite the Philadelphia Eagles using their RBs in a committee, D’Andre Swift was used in a variety of ways as a pass-catcher.
Fantasy Impact
Swift is best utilized when put in space, and his pass-catching prowess makes him a versatile weapon. His explosiveness led him to average 6.3 yards per touch in 2022, but his lack of health and consistency led the 24-year-old back to fall out of favor in Detroit. Now in a potent offense like Philadelphia with one of the best offensive-line units in the league, Swift could be in for a big season if he can stay on the field.

Cole Kmet signs four-year extension
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, TE Cole Kmet is signing a four-year extension with the Chicago Bears worth $50 million – $32.8 million guaranteed.
Fantasy Impact
Kmet led the Bears in receiving yards last season with 544 yards on 50 catches. Kmet also proved to be a scoring threat, racking up seven touchdowns on the season. Heading into his fourth year, Kmet will be paid like a top-10 TE starting in 2024, and the Bears will keep him around to further develop chemistry with third-year QB Justin Fields.

Packers will take ‘half a season’ to evaluate Jordan Love
Green Bay Packers’ president Mark Murphy stated that they will need at least half a season to know what they have in Jordan Love.
Fantasy Impact
Love is entering his first season as the unquestioned starter in Green Bay after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the Jets in the offseason. Love enters the 2023 with very limited regular season playing time, attempting just 83 passes in 10 games in his career. While there is likely to be growing pains early in the season, the team has preached patience and will give Love every opportunity to live up to his first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.
