Tuesday’s Top Underdog Fantasy MLB Pick ‘Em Picks

Spencer Torkelson: 6.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Torkelson has cranked his production up with the platoon advantage this year. According to FanGraphs, he has a .386 OBP, .188 ISO and 139 wRC+ in 57 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers in 2023. The young hitter also has a sizable gap between his actual and expected stats. Per Baseball Savant, Torkelson’s .307 wOBA is markedly lower than his .340 xwOBA.

Thankfully, he has a good matchup tonight. Lefty Daniel Lynch has yielded a .519 SLG and .342 wOBA to 88 right-handed batters this year. He’s also surrendered a .356 OBP, .475 SLG and .358 wOBA to 230 righties in his career.

Mike Tauchman: 0.5 Walks – Higher

Tauchman has excelled as a patient table setter from the leadoff spot against righties for the Cubs. In 80 plate appearances against righties this year, Tauchman has walked 13 times (16.3 BB%). Patience isn’t a new trait for him, either. He’s had a 12.4 BB% in 582 plate appearances against righties in his career.

On the flip side, Johan Oviedo has issued free passes to left-handed batters at a high rate. Oviedo allowed 22 walks at an 11.4 BB% against 193 lefties this year. Oviedo is also more walk prone as he works through the order. He has a 7.9 BB% the first time through the order, a 11.1 BB% the second time and a 12.4 BB% the third time. And since Tauchman is Chicago’s first batter, he’ll see him the most times through the order.

Joey Votto: 7.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Votto gave the home faithful plenty to cheer about in his 2023 debut last night. In four plate appearances, Votto had two hits (a single and a homer), one walk, one run and three RBI. He also scalded the ball. Per FanGraphs, all three batted balls were deemed hard hit, and his average exit velocity was 105.0 mph.

The veteran left-handed hitter can pick up where he left off last night in a plus matchup at home. First, Votto rakes with the platoon advantage at Great American Ball Park. In 332 plate appearances against righties at home since 2021, Votto has had a .386 OBP, .326 ISO and 148 wRC+. Second, Noah Davis has coughed up a .533 OBP, .731 SLG and .537 wOBA to 30 lefties faced in his limited time in the majors. Finally, he ceded a .302 batting average to lefties in Triple-A this year.

Reid Detmers: 5.5 Strikeouts – Higher

Detmers has his work cut out for him against the Dodgers. However, striking out batters shouldn’t be an issue. In 12 starts spanning 62.1 innings this year, Detmers has had 76 strikeouts, 10.97 K/9, a 27.7 K% and 28.8 CSW%. Furthermore, he’s struck out precisely eight batters in back-to-back starts and struck out over 5.5 batters eight times in 12 starts in 2023.

The young lefty has also excelled at striking batters out at home. In 114.0 innings at home since reaching the majors in 2021, Detmers has had 119 strikeouts, 9.39 K/9 and a 25.3 K%.

The matchup isn’t too shabby for his strikeout potential tonight, either. First, the Dodgers have a 23.1 K% against lefties this year. Second, LA has a 23.3 K% in the previous 14 days. Finally, they have a 23.0 K% on the road in 2023.
