Fantasy Baseball Injury Roundup: Aaron Judge, Nestor Cortes Jr, Luis Urias (2023)

Good morning, fantasy managers! It’s another Monday, and you know what that means. It’s time to check in on our fantasy baseball squads and see what the injury landscape looks like. Let’s dive into the latest updates.

Fantasy Baseball Injury Roundup – June 5, 2023

Aaron Judge (OF – NYY)

The Yankees’ power hitter is set to undergo further testing on his right big toe today. There’s no clear indication yet of a break, but the Yankees should provide a further update on Judge at some point on Monday or Tuesday.

Carlos Rodon (SP – NYY)

Good news for Rodon owners! He’s set to face live hitters on Wednesday. This next step in his recovery comes after a successful 30-pitch bullpen session last Friday. If everything goes well, we could see Rodon starting a rehab assignment very soon.

Nestor Cortes Jr. (SP – NYY)

It appears that Cortes might be hitting the injured list with a shoulder injury. If this comes to pass, he’ll likely miss one or two starts. This shouldn’t be a major blow to your roster, but make sure to adjust your rotation accordingly.

Carlos Correa (SS – MIN)

Correa’s plantar fasciitis has flared up, and he’s been absent from the lineup for three consecutive days. Monitor his situation closely, but also consider exploring other options if his batting woes persist.

Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)

The Twins outfielder is continuing his rest due to a rib injury. Thankfully, the ribs aren’t broken, but the rest days are piling up. If you need an active outfielder, you might need to find a short-term substitute.

Jose Altuve (2B – HOU)

Altuve is still out of the lineup due to an oblique injury. He’s been a reliable contributor when he’s been able to play, but that hasn’t been much in 2023.

Eric Lauer (SP – MIL)

Lauer is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. With his less-than-stellar ERA, he may not be on your radar, but it’s still good to know he’ll be back in the Brewers’ rotation soon.

Luis Urias (2B, 3B, SS – MIL)

Injury woes may finally be behind Urias, who is expected to rejoin the Brewers on Tuesday. He’s coming off a solid season and could be a valuable addition if you’ve been holding onto him.

Matt Bush (SP, RP – MIL)

Bush is set to begin a Triple-A rehab assignment on Tuesday. Given his shaky start to the season, you might want to hold off on getting him back on your roster for now.

Willy Adames (SS – MIL)

After spending time on the seven-day concussion IL, Adames is expected to rejoin the Brewers on Thursday. He hasn’t had a great start to the season, but hopefully, he can turn things around upon his return.

Wander Franco (SS – TB)

Franco is sitting out of Sunday’s lineup due to a left hamstring injury. He’s hoping to return Monday, but if he doesn’t, consider a short-term replacement.

Triston McKenzie (SP – CLE)

McKenzie was activated Sunday from the injury list after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Gunnar Henderson (3B, SS – BAL)

Henderson had to leave Saturday’s game due to lower back discomfort. He was replaced by Ramon Urias in the third inning after striking out in his lone at-bat before leaving. For now, fantasy managers should treat Henderson as day-to-day until further information comes to light.

Gerrit Cole (SP – NYY)

The Yankees’ ace, Gerrit Cole, had to make an early exit from his Saturday start against the Dodgers due to cramping. He did manage to get through six innings on just 80 pitches but could not continue further due to the issue. At this point, Cole is considered day-to-day, but the situation seems non-threatening, so it’s likely that he will make his next scheduled start.

Justin Steele (SP – CHC)

Cubs pitcher Justin Steele has been placed on the 15-day IL with left forearm tightness. This came after Steele departed his last start early due to the same issue. The southpaw has been a gem for the Cubs this season with a solid 2.65 ERA and a 6-2 record across 12 starts. Fantasy managers should monitor his progress closely.

Amed Rosario (SS – CLE)

Guardians shortstop Amed Rosario left Saturday’s game in the fourth inning due to left knee soreness. Rosario has had a tough time at the plate this season, hitting .226 with just one homer, eight stolen bases, and a .589 OPS across 51 appearances. Tyler Freeman stepped in for Rosario on Saturday night in Minnesota.

Greg Allen (OF – NYY)

Yankees’ outfielder Greg Allen has landed on the 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strain. Having only appeared in 10 games this season, hitting .214 with one homer, one stolen base, and a .884 OPS across 17 trips to the plate, this move isn’t likely to impact many fantasy rosters. Oswaldo Cabrera has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

Ryan Weber (RP – NYY)

Bad news for the Yankees bullpen as reliever Ryan Weber has been placed on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain. Forearm strains can often be a tricky issue leading to long-term absences. Despite his solid 3.14 ERA in eight appearances this season, Weber’s 4.37 SIERA and paltry 11.7% strikeout rate suggest regression could be in the cards upon his return.

Avisail Garcia (OF – MIA)

Marlins outfielder Avisail Garcia has suffered a minor setback in his recovery from a back injury. He was on a minor-league rehab assignment at Triple-A but will now head back to Miami for further evaluation. Garcia, who has been struggling at the plate this season with a .188 average, three homers, and a .576 OPS across 22 appearances, was last seen in action on April 28.

TJ Friedl (OF – CIN)

Reds’ outfielder TJ Friedl has hit the injured list owing to a hamstring injury. This is Friedl’s second IL stint of the season, but his performance prior to this has been impressive, batting a solid .326 with three homers, six stolen bases, and a .873 OPS across 42 appearances.

That wraps up our Injury Roundup for this week. Remember, injuries are a part of the game, and the key to a successful fantasy season is staying on top of these updates and adjusting your lineup accordingly. We’ll be back next Monday with another roundup of all the major injuries impacting your fantasy baseball rosters. Until then, may your players stay healthy and your fantasy points be plentiful!
