Tuesday’s Top Underdog Fantasy MLB Pick ‘Em Picks

Graham Ashcraft: 90.5 Pitches – Higher

Ashcraft has pitched like an innings-eating back-of-the-rotation hurler through his first 28 starts. According to FanGraphs, he has a 4.87 ERA in 153.1 innings in his young career. Still, the Reds allow him to take his lumps and pile up pitches.

According to ESPN’s game log, Ashcraft has thrown over 90.5 pitches five times in 10 starts this year. He exceeded 90.5 pitches at a higher rate last year, doing so 13 times in 19 starts. So, Ashcraft has thrown more than 90.5 pitches 18 times in 29 starts. The over looks great since he’s thrown more than 90.5 pitches in 62.1% of his starts in the majors.

Matt Olson: 9.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Bobby Miller will make his big-league debut tonight. However, the Dodgers are probably rushing him due to many injuries in their rotation. Miller had 5.65 ERA and 5.31 xFIP in four starts in Triple-A this year, totaling 14.1 innings. The young righty had just a 4.25 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A combined last year, too.

Miller will likely struggle in his first big-league start, and Olson can have a sizable hand in the struggles. Atlanta’s No. 2 hitter has had a .356 OBP, .278 ISO and 137 wRC+ in 329 plate appearances against righties at home since last year. In addition, Olson has raked this year. In 213 plate appearances this season, he has 13 homers, a .371 OBP, .290 ISO and 141 wRC+.

Ronald Acuna: 1.5 Total Bases – Higher

Acuna is an unstoppable force at the plate this year. In 214 plate appearances in 2023, he’s had 11 homers, 14 doubles, 11 homers, a .342 batting average, .355 expected batting average, .598 slugging, .702 expected slugging and .255 ISO.

Moreover, Acuna is excellent against righties at home. In 443 plate appearances against righties at home since 2021, Acuna has had 26 doubles, one triple, 19 homers, a .285 batting average, .512 slugging and .227 ISO. Finally, he’ll have the maximum number of opportunities to surpass 1.5 total bases since he hits leadoff for the Braves.

Pete Alonso: 8.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Sadly, Alonso doesn’t have a cupcake matchup tonight. Instead, Drew Smyly has pitched exceptionally well this year. Nevertheless, Alonso is a lefty killer.

In 438 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Alonso has had a .347 OBP, .282 ISO and 136 wRC+. The slugger is also mashing against everyone this year. In 205 plate appearances this season, he’s had 17 homers, a .322 OBP, .202 ISO and 135 wRC+.

Jorge Soler: 9.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Soler’s prop is my favorite tonight. First, he gets the pick-me-up from playing at Coors Field. Second, Soler’s a monster against lefties. In 276 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Soler has had a .350 OBP, .355 ISO and 152 wRC+. He’s been even more lethal for lefties this year. In 39 plate appearances against southpaws this year, Soler has seven homers, .513 OBP, .719 ISO and 320 wRC+.

Conversely, Austin Gomber is struggling this year. The 29-year-old lefty has a 6.70 ERA, 6.97 xERA and 5.03 xFIP in nine starts spanning 44.1 innings this year. Moreover, righties have obliterated him. The 536 righties who’ve faced Gomber since last year have had a .345 OBP, .525 slugging and .371 wOBA. So, Soler should shine tonight.
