Dynasty Stock Report: Dylan Cease, George Springer, Eduardo Rodriguez (Fantasy Baseball)

It seems crazy that over a fourth of the season has already come and gone. I hope each of you are to strong starts in your leagues. In dynasty, values change rapidly and it is important to stay up to date on the latest value changes with players.

Each week we will dive in on some players seeing their dynasty stock move up and others who are seeing theirs fall. You came for the players so let’s get to them!

Dynasty Baseball Stock Report

Here are the dynasty stock risers and fallers for Week 7.

Stock Up

Taylor Walls (SS – TB)

Taylor Walls was a glove first player without much fantasy intruige, but something got into the 26-year-old this year and has seen his bat take off. Walls mashed a grand slam on Sunday which brought his home run total to seven in just 110 plate appearances after having eight last year in 446 plate appearances.

Walls has increased his average exit velocity by over two mph and his hard-hit rate is up by nearly 10 percentage points. Walls makes extremely good contact and that has even improved significantly from last year. He is chasing just 22 percent of pitches out of the zone, and has an 86.5 percent zone contact rate.

Walls is also a sneaky source of speed and has six stolen bases so far. He could be a legit 20/20 bat and will likely continue to fly under the radar. However, to me, Walls’ stock is soaring up.

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP – DET)

If anyone expected this kind of dominance from Eduardo Rodriguez then kudos to you. I would not have guessed through 51.2 innings of Eduardo Rodriguez’s season he would have a sub-three ERA, much less the 1.57 that he currently has. Considering how much time he has missed with injury over the last few years, Rodriguez looks stellar.

Only Sonny Gray, at 1.39, has a lower ERA among qualified starters than Rodriguez. The lefty also has a 0.79 ERA and a 24.7 percent strikeout rate to just a 5.3 percent walk rate. The walk rate is the best of Rodriguez’s career.

Despite the low strikeout total, Rodriguez is inducing a ton of weak contact and is keeping the ball on the ground. Rodriguez’s insanely hot start is not sustainable, but he has probably increased his dynasty stock more than any player this year. The success with his four-seam, changeup, and cutter is a large part of the reason he has thrived.

Stock Down

George Springer (OF – TOR)

Every year we buy back into George Springer because he was hurt and missed time. There are a variety of excuses for Springer each year, but every year it feels like more of the same. At this point, Springer is 33 years old and will be 34 before the season ends.

The good news is that George Springer has been healthy most of the season. The bad news is that his performance has not been up to standard. After not stealing more than six bases since 2016, Springer stole 14 last year and is up to six this season. Other than steals, there is not a lot of fantasy production to write home about it.

Springer has just five home runs and a .225/.287/.335 slash line. His average exit velocity is the worst of his career by over two mph and his hard-hit rate is down as well. It seems like Springer has traded power for contact, as his contact rates are currently career-best.

Due to his age, injury performance, and injury history, Geroge Springer should be an easy fade in most dynasty contexts.

Dylan Cease (SP – CHW)

After a dominant 2022 season where he finished as the AL Cy Young Runner-up, Dylan Cease was highly sought after in both redraft and dynasty leagues. He fired a 2.20 ERA across 184 innings with a 30.4 percent strikeout rate. Regression seemed inevitable, especially considering his inconsistent command and volatility.

Regression has hit Cease and hit him hard this year. After starting the season strong, Cease has gone downhill in his last five. Over that span of 24 innings, he has a 7.50 ERA which even includes six shutout innings against the Astros. In two of those starts, Cease allowed seven runs and one of those starts was against the Royals, who are arguably the worst offense in the league.

The biggest issue with Cease is exactly what you have seen his year. The inconsistency start-to-start. You never know what you are going to get and some starts, things spiral out of control quickly. It is just so hard to value Dylan Cease as a high-end starting pitcher for dynasty purposes given the red flags.
