Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft: Three Rounds, Middle Pick (2023 Fantasy Football)

I recently did a post-NFL dynasty rookie mock draft with some people from GoingFor2 and some people from the FantasyPros discord channel. I picked from the sixth spot in this mock draft, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. There were a couple of picks I questioned and a few great values that I felt slipped a little too far. Below are the draft results broken in to six pick blocks, followed by my overall assessment of the draft. Enjoy…

Dynasty Rookie Draft Kit

Round 1 Picks 1.01-1.06

These six players in the first half of Round 1 should be the same six players in nearly every 1QB draft, just the order may vary. My only surprise here was seeing Quentin Johnston go ahead of Jordan Addison. I’ve seen Addison go as high as 1.02, over the consensus WR1 in this class, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, so seeing him slip to 1.05 here was interesting, but not egregious.

At my 1.06, I knew I would be left with the last of those players, making my choice easy and grabbing Zay Flowers. With Lamar Jackson officially a Raven for at least the next few years, and with a new offensive coordinator that loves to throw the ball, Flowers is set up to make an impact in fantasy for Year 1.

Overall, there isn’t much to take from this round as it went pretty much chalk. Any of these six players can impact your fantasy teams as early as Week 1, but it’s more likely you will start to see their production slowly increase as we progress through the season, and in Smith-Njigba and Quentin Johnston‘s case, maybe not till 2024.

Round 1 Picks 1.07-1.12

The back half of the first is very different from the first half as there are probably 12 players that could go in these next six picks. Jonathan Mingo at the 1.07 seems a little high for a wide receiver that, pre-draft, was consistently a back half of the second, early third-round pick, but NFL Draft Capital caused his value to spike. The landing spot helped his cause as well as he has a very realistic opportunity to enter the season as the Panthers’ WR1 or WR2.

Typically you wouldn’t see QBs go this high in a 1QB league, however, this class from 1.07 on is extremely volatile and the range of outcomes for these players is massive — thus managers are electing to play it safe by taking the QBs that went in the first four picks of the NFL Draft.

Zach Charbonnet‘s value took a huge hit when the Seahawks drafted him, but the fact remains the Seahawks like to run the ball and now they have two very capable young running backs. Charbonnet may be the most valuable handcuff in fantasy this season, and should Kenneth Walker miss time, Charbonnet would have weekly RB1 upside.

Not only did we have two quarterbacks go here in the first, but we also had two tight ends taken. Even in a non-TE premium league, both of these tight ends are valid Round 1 rookie picks. They have great landing spots and in the case of Dalton Kincaid, he has first-round draft capital.

Round 2 Picks 2.01-2.06

2.01 RB Kendre Miller 2.02 RB Devon Achane 2.03 WR Jayden Reed 2.04 WR Josh Downs 2.05 WR Marvin Mims 2.06 RB Roschon Johnson

The top half of Round 2 was all running backs and wide receivers, starting off with Kendre Miller at 2.01. Miller goes to a team that many believe to be a good landing spot but I’m not as enamored with it. Yes, Alvin Kamara is expected to be suspended and that would open the door for another running back to get a full workload — however, that running back is already on the roster and his name is Jamaal Williams, not Kendre Miller. Miller has value and solid upside, and I’ve seen him go as high as 1.11, but it does not come without risk.

Jayden Reed was an interesting pick at the 2.03, but I like it. The Packers are doing everything they can to get Jordan Love the weapons he needs to succeed (allegedly something they never did for Aaron Rodgers) and Reed is a huge part of that plan. Reed is electric with the ball in his hands and I expect the Packers to find creative ways to do just that — get the ball in his hands.

I was ecstatic to get Roshon Johnson with the 2.06. GoingFor2’s Jamie Perog is the conductor of the hype train on Roschon and I’ve just recently purchased my ticket. Jamie has gone as far as to say he’d take him as early as 1.10, and looking at the pool of players in that range, I can not construct a good defense on why that’s too high.

The last two guys in this range I wanted to mention are Devon Achane and Josh Downs. They are two players whose value differs drastically from league to league. I’ve seen Achane go in the first and I’ve seen him fall to the back half of round two. Downs is consistently taken in the second, but I’ve seen him as high as 2.01 and as low as 2.12. It’ll be interesting to watch their ADP as we get closer to camps and preseason.

Round 2 Picks 2.07-2.12

2.07 RB Tank Bigsby 2.08 WR Rashee Rice 2.09 TE Sam LaPorta 2.10 QB CJ Stroud 2.11 WR Jalin Hyatt 2.12 WR Cedric Tillman

In the second half of Round 2, we see the last of the Top 3 QBs go with CJ Stroud going at 2.10, and we see the consensus TE3 in Sam LaPorta go at 2.09. In a 1QB non-TE Premium league, those are two players that won’t pay off right away, but I don’t mind grabbing them here in the second.

We also see three of my favorite mid-round wide receivers go in this round with Rashee Rice (2.08), Jalin Hyatt (2.11), and Cedric Tillman (2.12). Hyatt has the highest upside of the three, but he also has the lowest floor, but at the backend of the second for a player that many had going in the first round in both the NFL Draft and rookie drafts is great value. Rashee Rice‘s value increased due to his landing spot in Kansas City. Despite their recent draft woes in the wide receiver department, it’s still considered a good landing spot.

Tank Bigsby kicked off Round 2 at 2.01, and despite not getting a landing spot where he is the unquestioned No. 1 running back, he could end up being a big piece of a committee on a team that will score a lot points this season. Playing behind Travis Etienne makes Bigsby a nice handcuff that might also have standalone value.

Round 3 Picks 3.01-3.06

3.01 RB Tyjae Spears 3.02 QB Will Levis 3.03 RB Chase Brown 3.04 WR Tank Dell 3.05 RB Israel Abanikanda 3.06 Michael Wilson

Round 3 is full of players that got surprising draft capital, raising their stock in dynasty drafts. Guys like Michael Wilson, Tank Dell and even to some extent Tajae Spears were all guys that either landed in a good spot or were drafted much higher than any of us anticipated. Twitter darling turned border-line undraftable, Israel Abanikanda, is here in the third, and, while I like him, it’s hard to see a path to success in this crowded backfield — barring injuries.

Will Levis wraps up the four QBs taken in this draft, and, honestly, I think I would have rathered Hendon Hooker here over Levis. Hooker has a higher ceiling than Levis, even if both have a similar floor. I’d rather bet on the upside in the third than take the “safer” Levis.

Round 3 Picks 3.07-3.12

3.07 RB Kenny McIntosh 3.08 RB Zach Evans 3.09 WR Xavier Hutchinson 3.10 RB Eric Gray 3.11 RB Sean Tucker 3.12 WT A.T. Perry

The back half of the third round is filled with blind-folded dart throws. Pick your poison; is it UDFA Sean Tucker landing in Tampa, is it seventh-round running back Kenny McIntosh who gets to play behind Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet, or maybe you like Zach Evans to take over for Cam Akers in L.A.? Either way, in this round of the draft you’re just picking players that are likely to head straight to your taxi squad. Just grab a guy you like and pray he can turn into something down the road.
