Tuesday’s Top Underdog Fantasy MLB Pick ‘Em Picks

Joey Meneses: 6.0 Fantasy Points – Higher

Josh Fleming has been flummoxed in the Majors. The lefty teased potential when debuting in 2020 but has struggled mightily since. According to FanGraphs, Fleming has had a 5.43 ERA in 139.1 innings since 2021.

Joey Meneses is a late-bloomer who’s had a smoother transition to The Show than Fleming. The 30-year-old hitter has a 145 wRC+ in 257 plate appearances for the Nationals. Further, the righty has a 192 wRC+ against southpaws in 82 plate appearances.

On the flip side, Fleming has been terrorized by righties. He’s allowed a .336 wOBA to them in his career and was teed off on for a .462 wOBA last year. Underdog Fantasy’s fantasy scoring for hitters is 2.0 points for runs and RBI, 3.0 points for singles, walks and hit by pitch, 4.0 points for a stolen base, 6.0 points for a double, 8.0 points for a triple and 10.0 points for a homer. Meneses should do enough damage in this matchup to exceed 6.0 fantasy points.

Matt Strahm: 4.0 Strikeouts – Lower

Matt Strahm had an opener appearance in 2021. However, he hasn’t had a traditional start since 2019. The lefty had 8.93 K/9 and a 22.9 K% as a starter in 2019. Sure, those are acceptable numbers. They’re not eye-catching, though.

Additionally, he’s unlikely to handle a standard starter’s workload tonight since he pitched fewer than 3.0 innings in all six of his Spring Training appearances. Moreover, he didn’t strike out more than 4.0 batters in any of his spring appearances. Thus, the leash likely isn’t long enough for him to strike out more than 4.0 batters against New York’s powerful lineup tonight. And the Bronx Bombers can rough him up and chase him early if he’s overmatched in his transition back to starting.

Salvador Perez: 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs – Higher

Salvador Perez crushes lefties, and Yusei Kikuchi is a mess against righties. It’s a match made in offensive production heaven for Salvy tonight. Perez has a .342 OBP, .295 ISO and 149 wRC+ in 304 plate appearances against lefties since 2021. Meanwhile, 355 right-handed batters destroyed Kikuchi for a .372 OBP, .535 slugging and .390 wOBA in 2022. Perez should inflict damage tonight against Kikuchi, and Perez’s teammates can help the catcher cross home plate, too.

Paul Goldschmidt: 9.5 Fantasy Points – Higher

Paul Goldschmidt steamrolls left-handed pitching. Since 2021, he has had a .466 OBP, .345 ISO and 225 wRC+ against southpaws in a meaningful sample of 278 plate appearances. Additionally, seven batters in St. Louis’ projected lineup have at least a 116 wRC+ against lefties since 2021, one has a 95 wRC+ and the other projected starter is a rookie who hasn’t faced a lefty in the Majors yet.

The Red Birds’ lefty-killing lineup will likely rudely welcome the debuting Dylan Dodd to the bump. According to Betting Pros, the Cardinals are -137, and the game’s total is 10.0 runs. As a result, the Cardinals should light up the scoreboard, and the lefty-killing Goldy should get in on the fun, hitting third in St. Louis’s talented lineup.

Nolan Arenado: 1.5 Total Bases – Higher

Nolan Arenado is another lefty killer on the Cards and slots directly behind Goldy in the cleanup spot. So, this selection has a correlation element with Goldschmidt’s fantasy points over. Unlike Goldschmidt, Arenado doesn’t draw walks at a high rate against lefties. The veteran third baseman has a rock-solid 8.0 BB% against lefties since 2021. However, most of his damage is done by swinging the stick, evidenced by Arenado’s .602 slugging and .327 ISO against lefties since 2021. As a result, the over for 1.5 total bases by Arenado against a debuting lefty who’s pitched less than 60 innings in the upper Minors is a tantalizing pick.
