James Cook (RB – BUF) – 97.4 ADP

The Bills have been longing for a player to take control of the running back room for several years now and James Cook looks like the most likely player to be able to do so in 2023. Buffalo added Damien Harris to the backfield but at a cost of only $1 mllion, which isn’t the kind of contract that guarantees Harris will even make the final roster in September. Cook is entering the second year of his rookie deal after a slow start to his career with the Bills bringing him along slowly. Cook was one of two rookies to average 1.0 or more fantasy points per touch last year, with Breece Hall being the other. Cook also managed a positive number in both rushing and receiving EPA as he earned more playing time as the year went on. Harris will no-doubt see usage near the goal line, but Cook has every opportunity to take a large amount of the backfield touches in an offense we want exposure to.

Samaje Perine (RB – DEN) – 110.1 ADP

Cinncinati sought to keep Samaje Perine, despite the uncertainty with their own backfield, but Perine opted to take the exact same contract with the Broncos instead. Moving from a Super Bowl contender to the Broncos is a move that not every player would have done, particularly if it wasn’t for a higher-value contract. Nevertheless, Perine was attracted by Sean Payton’s personal pitch of using two running backs throughout his coaching career, not to mention the ambiguity over Javonte Williams who is recovering from a serious knee injury that could keep him out for as much as the entire 2023 season. Perine excelled in 2022, often being more efficient than Joe Mixon with 4.2 yards per carry to Mixon’s 4.0 and 26 missed tackles to Mixon’s 33 on 110 fewer attempts. If the Broncos are without Williams for an extended period then Perine can be a three-down back, something he showcased last year with 7.6 yards per reception to Mixon’s 7.3.

Dynasty Rookie Draft Kit

Michael Mayer (TE – Notre Dame) – 151.3 ADP

With FFPC’s tight end premium scoring, we should be looking for tight ends who have opportunities to stay on the field as much as possible. The boost we receive with an extra 0.5 PPR points for tight end receptions isn’t much good to us if a tight end is playing 40% of snaps and barely seeing a target. Michael Mayer can be a true every-down tight end thanks to his ability as a strong blocker and good pass catcher. Mayer will be the type of tight end coaches love and he’s routinely getting mocked high up in the first round. That kind of draft capital combined with his footballing abilities will keep him on the field and with great opportunities. Don’t be surprised if Michael Mayer is being drafted several rounds earlier come August.

Zay Jones (WR – JAX) – 165.8 ADP

The Jaguars have bolstered their wide receiver room by adding Calvin Ridley, and while it likely eats into Zay Jones’ ceiling, if you’re drafting for best ball then it’s worth remembering that ceiling games are still very possible. In 2022 Jones was drafted in the range of 180-200 and went on to be the WR13 between Weeks 10-17. Jones had four games over 20 points, which resulted in weekly finishes all inside the top seven wide receivers, and had seven total games with double-digit returns. After a positive year for the Jaguars in 2022, washing away the stink of Urban Meyer, things seem only to be trending up for Jacksonville and if they can keep the form going that they displayed in the second half of 2022, then we will want pieces of that offense no matter the cost. Drafting receivers later on shouldn’t be about their floor, but instead their ceiling, and that’s what Zay Jones offers.

Hayden Hurst (TE – CAR) – 176 ADP

The Panthers swooped in to offer Hayden Hurst a three-year $21.7 million deal when the Bengals expected him to re-sign with them. Now Hurst finds himself part of a veteran pass-catching group that the Panthers have signed to surround the incoming quarterback, who will likely be the first pick of this year’s draft. Hurst is onto his fourth NFL team in a matter of years and has never been a top-end producer, but in the two years he’s been the focal point of the tight end room, he saw 52 receptions in 2020 with the Falcons and then 48 with the Bengals in 2022. With little in the way of tight end competition in Carolina, it seems fair to project Hurst for a similar amount of catches in 2023 with a range of outcomes that include fringe TE1 territory.

Jeff Wilson Jr. (RB – MIA)– 150 ADP

The Miami Dolphins sought to run it back in 2023 by re-signing both Jeff Wilson Jr. and Raheem Mostert, who worked well within Mike McDaniel’s offense, both bringing familiarity from their time together in San Francisco. Wilson was the RB35 from the time he joined the Dolphins to the end of the season, with two top-eight performances, along with having a breakaway run rate of 5.88% which ranked twelfth highest among running backs with 50 attempts or more. The ability to break long runs makes Wilson appealing for fantasy purposes, as it can turn limited opportunities into strong point returns.

Will Levis (QB – Kentucky) – 221.2 ADP

There are many flaws with Will Levis’s game, and his range of outcomes for his NFL career seems as large as any first-round prospect, but when it comes to fantasy football we should always be building our rosters with one eye on the future and in particular the fantasy playoffs. Year after year we see rookie quarterbacks starting by the end of the season, whether that’s a single performance like Sam Howell in 2022, or consistent games like Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder managed in the back half of last year. Levis might not make the right reads all the time, but if he brings his rushing ability along with his gung-ho throwing attitude it could have a solid output for fantasy points, and at the cost of a very late-round pick, Levis looks intriguing.

Van Jefferson (WR – LAR) – Undrafted

The Rams moved on from Allen Robinson II after one highly unsuccessful year as they look to clear salary, in their very unique version of a mini-rebuild, leaving Cooper Kupp with little receiving competition outside of Van Jefferson, Tyler Higbee, and Tutu Atwell. With the options looking thin, it’s worth giving Van Jefferson a more considered look for 2023 after his start to 2022 was hampered by injury. Van Jefferson was 18th in yards per reception among wide receivers with 30 or more targets.
