Fantasy Baseball Daily Opener: Shane McClanahan, Max Muncy, Adolis Garcia (4/24)

Greetings, friends. Welcome back to those of you who followed along with the Daily Opener last season. For those of you who are new here, this is where we hang out and talk about what happened in baseball the night before.

Every morning, I’ll be with you to recap the previous day of baseball and talk about what stood out to me. We’ll find fun stats. We’ll discuss some top performances. We’ll lament some injuries. We’ll touch on any noteworthy news and updates. We’ll take a peek at the day ahead. We’ll start way too many consecutive sentences with the word “we’ll.” And we’ll have a few laughs along the way.

Have questions or just want to talk baseball? Feel free to reach out on Twitter @mikeMaher with questions or feedback anytime.

Fantasy Baseball News and Notes

Headlines

Adolis Garcia hit three home runs on Sunday, bringing his line on the season to 18 runs scored, seven HR, 28 RBI, one SB, a .250 batting average, a 6.7% walk rate (up a full percent over his career average and up from 6.1% in 2022) and a 20.2% strikeout rate (down from 29.2% for his career and 27.9% in 2022). It’s still early, but nearly all of his metrics are trending in the right direction, including his OPS, wOBA, and Hard Hit %. Is this Garcia taking the next step in his development? Or is this an early sell-high opportunity for fantasy managers? I think the answer is somewhere in the middle, but managers who roster Garcia should probably hold unless they’re blown away by an offer because it’s unlikely you’ll get an offer good enough that pays for Garcia’s ceiling.

Max Muncy hit three more home runs over the weekend to give him 11 on the season. Oddly enough, he has exactly zero doubles. His strikeout rate is up, but so is his walk rate. His batting average (.254) is about as good as you’re going to get. That comes with a .212 BABIP, but he has a career BABIP of .255 and posted a .227 BABIP in 2022, so we probably aren’t going to see some extreme regression there. This is Muncy’s ceiling. This is why you drafted him. Enjoy it.

Shane McClanahan posted a 35% swinging strike rate while striking out 10 batters over six innings in a no-decision against the White Sox this weekend. For those wondering, 35% is a ridiculous number. Through five starts, McClanahan is 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 11.48 K/9, 20.3% swinging strike rate, and a .176 average against. His expected numbers all point to some regression, but he looks like one of the best pitchers in baseball right now. And given how pitching has generally looked in April, he’s been incredibly valuable through the first month.

Fun!
