Dynasty Trade Targets: Quarterback (2023 Fantasy Football)

Dynasty Trade Targets: Quarterback (2023 Fantasy Football)

The QB landscape is always changing. Picking up on the trends and buying low can be a great way to help your team get a shot at winning it all in your league. The trick is to find assets that you think are about to see a rise in value or assets that are artificially depressed in value. If you strike before the landscape changes, you stand to profit and get ahead of your league-mates. With that in mind, here are six quarterbacks I’m trying to add before things change for the better.

Dynasty Quarterback Trade Targets (2023 Fantasy Football)

Lamar Jackson (QB – BAL)

I recently wrote that Lamar Jackson was a prime candidate to sell high if you can get the right price. I stand by that, but I also think he is a good trade target as well, again, depending on the price. I know the longer his contract situation goes unresolved, the more risk he has for dynasty managers. That risk can help lower his price in some leagues, making it worth asking about him. However, I still think he plays this season, so if you can get him for a song, now is the best time to do that.

There are three main outcomes from this situation that are worth looking at. The most likely outcome is that he plays for the Ravens again this year, the team he’s most familiar with and the team that wants him the most. There’s that small chance that he doesn’t play at all, but there’s also a medium-sized chance that he either gets traded or cut somehow and plays elsewhere. A QB changing teams is risky, but one this talented doesn’t worry me much. This means his downside is relatively low, so I’m calling him a target if you can avoid paying full price.

Kyler Murray (QB – ARI)

Injuries are tough to gauge, both due to severity and timing. It’s looking very possible that Kyler Murray will miss the start of the season for the Cardinals. However, there’s also a chance that Murray will miss the entire year if the team isn’t good by the time he’s ready to return. If that’s the case, buying Murray now might be tough to swallow. You’re really only buying on a rebuilding team where you can wait it out. You’re also not paying top-10 QB prices right now, which makes it worth risking. If you’re contending with Murray on your roster, I’d try to hold on as long as possible but don’t be afraid to move him for points as the playoffs get closer. Buying now and flipping in season is always a fun move.

Jared Goff (QB – DET)

Jared Goff is a fun one. Personally, I think the Lions are in for a big season. Therefore, Goff is in for a big season. They let touchdown machine Jamaal Williams walk and replaced him with David Montgomery. Williams was a fantasy stud, and Montgomery was basically a fantasy dud. This bodes well for the entire offense, though, since the TDs will have to go elsewhere. I expect Jameson Williams to take that next step and Goff to be the beneficiary. Adding him now before people catch on feels like a no-brainer. I bet his value goes up between now and November.

Russell Wilson (QB – DEN)

We all saw what Russell Wilson did last year, and none of it was good. There were a lot of off-the-field changes for Russ last year that I think explain a lot of his terrible fantasy output. With the Broncos bringing in Sean Payton, I think Wilson will be much improved in 2023. Most dynasty managers are pretty plugged in, but there is a chance that the Wilson manager in your league is either not phased by the Payton addition or hasn’t really been following along. That’s likely to change during or after the draft, so trading for Wilson now might be your last chance. Even if the other manager likes Wilson, they might be willing to move on to a younger asset or pivot to a stud at another position. That option would work for me regardless of my need at the QB position.

Matthew Stafford (QB – LAR)

In short, see what I wrote for Goff. It’s pretty similar to my thoughts on Matthew Stafford. Kupp will be back, and we all saw how electric that connection was in 2021. Allen Robinson is a shell of his former self, and the other receivers aren’t worth rostering in most dynasty formats. I’m fully expecting the Rams to draft another WR this year, boosting Stafford’s value in the process. Best to buy him now before the draft changes things. Kupp and a solid rookie will help Stafford be a top-12 QB most weeks, and even at his age, I want those points in my lineup.

Desmond Ridder (QB – ATL)

The cheapest QB on the list is also the one with the shortest leash. Desmond Ridder came into the league with a lot of question marks and didn’t do much to answer them in his rookie year. There’s a chance that the Falcons will draft another QB this year to replace him, but there’s also a chance they don’t. The moves they’ve made in free agency look like a team moving to contend, and maybe they see Ridder as the best option to do that, given the current QB landscape. I’d be fine adding Ridder to my bench before the draft on the off chance that he’s QB2-worthy in a pinch down the stretch. I wouldn’t want to start him, but depth can be very important for a title run. Sending a late second for Ridder feels like a great place to start.
