Dynasty Rookie Tight Ends: 2023 NFL Draft Prospects
2023 NFL Draft Summary
A solid blocker who executed a lot of different assignments from different alignments and who presents his quarterback with a big target and reliable pair of hands underneath. Might need to add a little bit of bulk and functional strength at the pro level, but has a very translatable skillset and looks like a safe pick, especially for a team looking to play smashmouth football.
Projection: Round 4
2023 NFL Draft Summary
A productive tight end who’s not as big as some of the other prospects in the class but who plays bigger than his size because of his technique, physicality, and motor. Can execute various different types of blocks in the run game and has the athleticism, coordination, and route-running chops to provide teams with a reliable target in the passing game.
Projection: Round 3
2023 NFL Draft Summary
A big tight end who has the motor and functional strength to help set a physical tone in the run game and who also has some pretty smooth receiving skills. Despite having a big sophomore campaign, should be considered something of a project at this point because his overall balance and technique as a blocker are still on the sloppier side and because he will have to run routes with more attention to detail at the next level in order to separate.
Projection: Round 5
2023 NFL Draft Summary
A player who’s been a weapon in the passing game over the past two seasons, he has the athleticism and route-running skills to reprise that role at the pro level. He has the functional strength, range and toughness to develop into an adequate blocker if he cleans up his overall balance and positioning.
Projection: Rounds 4-5
Michael Mayer (TE – Notre Dame)
2023 NFL Draft Summary
Widely considered the best tight end in the class, he has the size, strength and route-running skills to step into a starting lineup as a rookie. Although, he has some work to do as a blocker in order to reach his potential in the run game. As good as he is now, still has considerable untapped potential and appears destined to come off the board in the first round.
Projection: Round 1
Luke Musgrave (TE – Oregon State)
2023 NFL Draft Summary
One of the more intriguing tight ends in the class from a physical/athletic standpoint, offering an impressive combination of size, length, physicality, competitiveness, and speed, but is mostly potential at this point, with inconsistent technique as a blocker and issues with drops in the passing game. Has starting-caliber tools which could allow him to slip ahead of some of the more productive, polished tight ends in the class if his knee checks out medically.
Projection: Round 3-4
Luke Schoonmaker (TE – Michigan)
2023 NFL Draft Summary
A solid inline tight end with the size, toughness, functional strength, and work rate teams look for in a “Y”, but who doesn’t have many explosive elements to his game and will probably continue to be limited to more of a safety valve role at the next level. Primary value will likely come as a blocker, where he has the physical tools, temperament, and technique to successfully execute a variety of different assignments.
Projection: Round 4-5
Darnell Washington (TE – Georgia)
2023 NFL Draft Summary
Has a ton of potential because of his frame and his surprising athleticism, but was never really able to leverage those gifts to dominate opponents as either a receiver or blocker, so whoever drafts him is going to have to be patient, working with him to clean up his technique as a blocker and diversifying his route tree in the passing game. Looked like more of a mid-rounder on tape but appears destined to go considerably higher.
Projection: Round 2-3
