NFL Week 18 Injury Report Analysis

Jalen Hurts (QB – PHI)

TBD. Lean towards playing Week 18. The Eagles have likely been appropriately conservative here, needing only 1 win out of their last 3 games to secure the bye. At this point, performance impact projects to be minimal. Re-injury risk is similarly low, as this is an uncommon injury in NFL players to begin with. As long as he doesn’t take a bad hit specifically to this area of the shoulder, very little playoff impact is expected.

Lamar Jackson (QB – BAL)

Lamar has now missed 5 weeks of practice and games. By the end of 6 weeks, over 80% of players would typically return here. That data suggests a high likelihood that he comes back next week in time for the first round of the playoffs. However, the wild card here is the contract. He’s up for re-negotiation, and probably looking for a fully guaranteed long-term deal. It’s therefore not incredibly surprising that he’d be conservative here, but it’s hard to predict what he’s going to decide for next week.

Deebo Samuel (WR – SF)

Back in action Week 18. WRs generally take 1 game to ramp up their volume, so he should be full speed by the time the playoffs come around.

Damar Hamlin (S – BUF)

Amazing news day after day, just as we have all been hoping for. There are a lot of variables here, but yes I do think it’s very realistic that he makes it back to the league.

Lane Johnson (OT – PHI)

Lean towards Johnson being active when the playoffs come around. If the Eagles land the bye, he’ll have had 4 weeks to rehab. It’s obviously not a perfect solution for a problem that will eventually get surgery, but he’ll likely be able to play through it as a solid contributor.

Tristan Wirfs (OT – TB)

No injury to report here, but the Bucs’s Week 17 offensive explosion in Wirfs’s 2nd game back from injury makes me wonder – how much of this is just Tom Brady having time to throw again? Brady has always struggled (relatively speaking) against pressure, and Wirfs is a top 2 OT according to Pro Football Focus. We’ll be watching this team closely as a possible sleeper going into the playoffs.
