Mojo Market Advice: Buy & Sell (Divisional Round)

Though the NFL regular season is over, that does not mean there were no significant changes in the Mojo portfolios of those who played on Wild Card Weekend. Two New York Giants players, in particular, saw big jolts in their stock prices after their upset of Minnesota, as Daniel Jones (+11.3%) and Isaiah Hodgins (+12.5%) suddenly became much more coveted players.

With the divisional round upon us, we offer one NFL player to buy low on (whether short-term or long-term) and sell high before their prices tumble.

Mojo Market Advice: Buy & Sell (Divisional Round)

Buy

Trevor Lawrence (QB – JAX): $64.30

As we saw in Daniel Jones’ case with how well he performed in the first season under Brian Daboll, Doug Pederson has seemingly worked the same magic on Trevor Lawrence, unleashing the unlimited potential that was so apparent by all draft experts when he was the consensus No. 1 overall pick.

Over the last nine regular season games, Lawrence led the team to a 7-2 record and had a 15-2 TD-INT ratio. While he also mixed in five fumbles lost in that span (and his nine fumbles on the season were four more than any other player), those issues are the most correctable. Jacksonville won five consecutive regular season games for the first time in a single season since 2005 and became the second team to reach the playoffs after starting 3-7 or worse through ten games. Most of that has to do with Lawrence’s development.

In the last five drives against the Chargers in the Wild Card Round, Lawrence went 23-for-29 for 253 yards and four touchdowns, while the team scored 31 points in that span. He takes that momentum into a game against a Chiefs defense that finished the regular season ranked 16h in scoring. The O/U for the game is 52.5, by far the highest projected total of any of the four Divisional Round games. Thus, Lawrence has one last chance to provide another jolt to his stock price while having already established the Jaguars as a force to be reckoned with in the AFC going forward.

Sell

Brock Purdy (QB- SF): $8.15

We may be the only ones selling Brock Purdy after yet another masterful performance. Not only is Purdy 6-0 as San Francisco’s starting quarterback, but he has thrown multiple touchdowns in each game. He also became just the third quarterback (joining Matthew Stafford and Kurt Warner) to throw for 300+ yards and have four total touchdowns in a playoff debut. Purdy is a big reason the 49ers maintained the No. 1 ranking in Offensive Efficiency since Week 8 and led the league in scoring (33.6 points per game) and turnover differential (13).

However, there are factors at play that have us down on Purdy’s short-term and long-term prognosis. First, he will face pressure he has not yet seen before as a starter this week, as the Cowboys entered last week ranked first in pressure percentage (39%), second in sack percentage (9%), and second in Pass Rush Win Rate (52%). Micah Parsons alone generated nine pressures on Tom Brady. That forced the GOAT into completing just two of his eight attempts on those pressures and an average of 1.4 yards per dropback.

Not only may Purdy get knocked down a peg this week, but one question those investing in him should ask is, are the 49ers going to give up on Trey Lance this early in his career after investing a No. 3 overall pick on him?
