Fantasy Football Week 17 and 2022 Season Usage Report

Fantasy Football Week 17 and 2022 Season Usage Report

High-end fantasy football performances and weekly finishes are fueled by high numbers of routes run and high-value targets and touches. The majority of top scorers from Week 17 and during the 2022 fantasy regular season saw healthy doses of red-zone targets, air yards, deep targets and goal-line carries.

Targeting players who run a high percentage of routes is also a good approach for identifying breakout candidates, beatable player props, DFS targets and players to prioritize in the Week 18 fantasy football rankings and for way-too-early 2023 rankings.

This weekly report will look at recent rates of routes run per dropback along with players who commanded a high rate of high-value opportunities compared to larger samples to find sleeper running backs, wide receivers and tight ends who are garnering more or fewer opportunities in the passing game heading into Week 18 and for the 2023 season.

Ja’Marr Chase (WR – CIN)

Interestingly enough, Ja’Marr Chase actually led the league in red-zone targets per game, commanding 22 in 11 games played (two per game). Should Chase push his former LSU teammate Justin Jefferson for fantasy WR1 status supremacy in 2023, red-zone usage would be his path to success.

TOP TAKEAWAYS

Tennessee Titans (Week 18 @ Jacksonville Jaguars)

Titans and Jaguars playing for AFC South Title (Saturday night)

  • Chigoziem Okonkwo drew the start but played behind Austin Hooper for the majority of Thursday night. Hooper drew 6 targets and ran a route on 67% of dropbacks. But he caught just one pass for 6 yards. Hooper and Geoff Swaim are free agents in 2023.
  • Okonkwo was more efficient per usual, catching 3 of 4 targets (50% target rate per route run) for 24 yards while running a route on just 19% of dropbacks. He is a candidate to take a major step forward in 2023 if Hooper does not return. The rookie’s 26% target rate ranked 2nd among all tight ends with at least 40 targets in 2022.
  • Joshua Dobbs started for the Titans in Week 17 and gave Tennessee’s passing game new life. He threw for 232 passing yards on 39 attempts (20 completions). Malik Willis has not thrown for 100 yards in any game he started this season.
  • Robert Woods was the team’s target leader, catching 5 of 9 targets (24%) for 39 yards and 1 TD. Treylon Burks finished second with 8 targets catching four for 66 yards. Burks also ran a route 76% of dropbacks (2nd to Woods) and commanded a whopping 122 air yards. He should be back on the WR3 radar with a plus-matchup versus the Jaguars in Week 18.
  • Nobody has done less with more than Woods this season, as the ex-Rams WR has played a full-time role in the Titans with a 87% route participation. But no player has scored fewer fantasy points than Woods with a route participation of at least 80% (Nick Westbrook Ihkine, 80%). Needless to say, Burks should easily ascend to the WR1 chair in 2023.
  • Hassan Haskins started for the Titans with Derrick Henry ruled out with a hip injury. The rookie carried the ball 12 times for 40 yards and added 2 catches for 13 yards on 3 targets. He totaled 15 backfield opportunities for a 60% backfield opportunity share – 66% snap share played – and ran a route on 45% of the dropbacks.
  • The box score suggests that Julius Chestnut and Jonathan Ward split No. 2 backfield duties evenly, with both seeing 5 backfield opportunities. Chestnut got first crack in the middle of the 2nd quarter but was not effective as a rusher, totaling 4 carries for -1 yards. He did catch one pass for 33 yards. Ward didn’t see his first touch until the 3rd quarter, and all 4 of his carries came on the final drive as the time expired.
  • Dontrell Hilliard is a free agent in 2023, suggesting Haskins has a chance to be the clear RB2 behind Henry next season.

Dallas Cowboys (Week 18 @ Washington Commanders)

Cowboys playing for playoff seeding combined with losses by 49ers and Eagles, Washington eliminated from postseason

  • 2023 free agent Tony Pollard sat out this contest due to a thigh injury, putting Ezekiel Elliott into the RB1 role. Zeke totaled 19 carries for 37 yards and 1 rushing TD (61% opportunity share, 66% snap share, 59% route participation).
  • He was not targeted and did not see a full-blown bellcow role with Malik Davis operating as the RB2. Davis had more rushing yards (39) on fewer carries (10) and also out-targeted Elliott (2 targets).
  • Davis basically took on a lesser version of the Pollard role (primary receiver and change-of-pace back).
  • CeeDee Lamb commanded a whopping 14 targets (34% target share) versus the Titans horrible secondary. Lamb finished with 11 catches for 100 yards (130 air yards). Lamb’s season-long 30% target share ranked 4th in 2022.
  • Tight end Dalton Schultz feasted without Pollard soaking up underneath targets, going for 56 yards and 2 scores on 7 catches (10 targets). Ran a route on 86% of dropbacks.
  • Stock up for T.Y. Hilton, stock down for Michael Gallup and Noah Brown.
  • Hilton saw more targets (5) than both Gallup and Brown (4 each) despite running a route on just 32% of dropbacks. 36% target rate per route run for Hilton.
  • And Hilton was efficient catching four of 5 targets (12% target share) for 50 yards. 3 of his targets came in the 1st half.
  • Gallup’s snaps didn’t decrease – 93% route participation – but Brown’s did – 57% route participation. It was 80% in Week 16.

Arizona Cardinals (Week 18 @ San Francisco 49ers)

Cardinals playing for nothing, 49ers are playing for a chance at No. 1 seed.

  • James Conner saw his snaps decrease massively from his usual 90 percent-plus snap share after exiting the game early with a shin injury. He played just 55% of the snaps. Corey Clement was the next man up, playing 43% of the snaps in a close contest. Keaontay Ingram played one snap. They are all under contract in 2023.
  • Without DeAndre Hopkins, Greg Dortch (2023 free agent) and Trey McBride each commanded 10 targets (26% target share). Dortch only amassed 4 catches for 15 yards but continued his streak of double-digit targets when starting (84% route participation).
  • McBride converted his elite usage – 96% snap share, 89% route participation – into 7 catches for 78 yards and 1 TD.
  • McBride has strung together a strong finish to his rookie year, playing over 84% of the snaps Weeks 15-17 to go along with a 16.5% target share and 14 catches for 150 receiving yards. He’s likely the Week 1 starter in 2023 with Zach Ertz coming off a November torn ACL.
  • Marquise Brown finished with 9 targets, hauling in 6 for 61 (121 air yards, 33%).
  • Andre Baccellia played ahead of both A.J. Green (2023 free agent) and Robbie Anderson.

Atlanta Falcons (Week 18 versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Tampa Bay likely resting starters to some extent with No. 4 seed locked, Falcons playing for nothing

  • Tyler Allgeier dominated the touches yet again for the Falcons, tallying 20 carries for 83 rushing yards and 1 TD in Week 17. The rookie saw 3 carries inside the 10-yard line. Cordarrelle Patterson also carried the ball 9 times for 42 yards and 1 TD, but was the much more involved receiver, commanding a whopping 8 targets (32% share, same as Drake London) for 6 catches and 42 receiving yards. Patterson ran a route on 62% of the dropbacks (second-most on the team).
  • Since Week 13 (last four games), Allgeier has averaged 87 rushing yards and 16 carries per game as the team’s RB1.
  • On the year, Allgeier ranks 5th in total rushing EPA (+11.42).
  • Kyle Pitts has not played since Week 11, but don’t forget the usage he was seeing prior to his injury. Pitts commanded 14 targets of 20-plus air yards, but only caught one. Upgraded quarterback play will go a long way in ensuring that Pitts is a fantasy factor in 2023. 28% target share (2nd among all TEs) for Pitts in 2022.
  • Drake London commanded a 29% target share as a 21-year-old rookie WR. Madness. Ridiculousness. His potential is through the roof if/when Atlanta can figure out their play under center.

Detroit Lions (Week 18 @ Green Bay Packers)

Lions and Packers both playing for playoff berths. However, Lions will be eliminated if Seahawks win earlier on Sunday.

  • Instead of promoting Craig Reynolds to the No. 3 running back with Justin Jackson inactive, the Lions chose to operate from a two-man backfield. Jamaal Williams rushed 22 times for 144 yards and 1 TD, while D’Andre Swift carried the ball 11 times for 78 yards and 1 TD. Swift also added 4 catches for 15 yards and another score as a receiver. Reynolds played just 18% of the snaps.
  • Jackson and Williams are both free agents in 2023.
  • 2023 free agent tight end Brock Wright scored 2 red-zone TDs, a week after Shane Zylstra scored 3. Although their overall playing time and usage remained unchanged.
  • Rookie Jameson Williams remained buried on the depth chart as the WR5, but he will undoubtedly be a starter in the DJ Chark (2023 free agent) role next season. Chark led the team in air yard share (30%) when healthy and in total deep targets (15).
  • Don’t let Amon-Ra St. Brown slide past you in 2023 fantasy drafts. His 31% target rate per route run trailed only Tyreek Hill in 2022.

Chicago Bears (Week 18 versus Minnesota Vikings)

Vikings will either be No. 2 or No. 3 seed depending on outcome of the 49ers game and if they win over the Bears.

  • Basically zero offensive production for the Bears sans Justin Fields rushing. The Bears QB rushed for 132 yards on 10 carries. However, he won’t get a chance to break the record after being ruled out of Week 18’s game versus the Vikings.
  • Soon-to-be 2023 free agent David Montgomery (6-for-24, 64% opportunity share) and potential future Bears starting RB Khalil Herbert (5-for-31) were not effective versus an improved Lions run defense.
  • Tight end Cole Kmet led the Bears in routes (81%) and receiving yards (2 catches for 27 yards). His 84% season-long route participation tied Mark Andrews for No. 1 at the position in 2022.
  • Chase Claypool returned to the starting lineup but played just 37% of the snaps and ran a route on 47% of dropbacks. Byron Pringle operated as WR1 with 4 targets (zero catches), followed by Equanimeous St. Brown and then N’Keal Harry. Those three, along with Dante Pettis, are all free agents in 2023.
  • Claypool, Velus Jones and Darnell Mooney round out the projected Chicago receiving corps heading into 2023.
  • Mooney ranked 12th in air yards share (37%) and 15th in target share (27%) in his 11 healthy games played in 2022.

Jacksonville Jaguars (Week 18 versus Tennessee Titans)

Titans and Jaguars playing for AFC South Title (Saturday night)

  • The Jaguars blew the doors off the Texans in Week 17. Trevor Lawrence came out in the middle of the 3rd quarter as did many of the other starters. Aside from his goal-line rush on 3rd down to open the game, JaMycal Hasty was clearly behind Travis Etienne in the backfield pecking order. Just 3 touches for Hasty in the entire 1st half. 80% opportunity share for Etienne in the first half, which is very close to his weekly average in a post-James Robinson offense.
  • ETN finished the 2022 fantasy regular season tied for 5th in carries inside the 10-yard line (23), but he only scored 4 touchdowns on those carries. He’s primed to see his TD number climb with the backfield all but his from the get-go in 2023.
  • I’d also anticipate him taking a large leap as a receiver as he ran a route on nearly half the dropbacks in 2022 (49%).
  • Marvin Jones‘ usage can provide us an idea of how the Jaguars will deploy their three top WRs in 2023, between Christian Kirk, Zay Jones and Calvin Ridley.
  • Marvin Jones ran a route on 73% of the dropbacks and led the Jaguars in deep targets (18) in 2022. He only caught three of them. All 3 players will be full-time starters in 3-WR sets, with Ridley providing a much-improved upgrade as a deep/red-zone threat.
  • Evan Engram‘s return to his rookie year form has so much to do with his role in the Jags offense: 80% route participation (4th) and 3rd in routes run (495).

Houston Texans (Week 18 @ Indianapolis Colts)

Both Texans and Colts have nothing to play for (pride I guess).

  • Royce Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale split usage in Week 17, with both RBs totaling 7 carries. Freeman saw more targets (5 vs. 3) and played more snaps (43% vs. 37%). Freeman and Rex Burkhead are both free agents in 2023, so currently Ogunbowale will be the only threat to Dameon Pierce in 2023.
  • Brandin Cooks led the Texans with 7 targets, catching four for 39 yards. He earned over 100 air yards on three targets of 20-plus air yards.
  • Chris Moore also ran the most routes but caught just 3-of-5 targets for 21 yards. Jordan Akins played ahead of Brevin Jordan, running a route on 67% of dropbacks. Not a great outlook for Jordan’s long-term value as he enters Year 3. Will be curious to see if the Texans re-sign Akins and/or Howard this offseason.
  • Nico Collins led the Texans in air yards share this season and in target rate per route run (23%). The big-bodied wideout seems like the only legitimate pass-catching option that will sniff fantasy football rosters in 2023 from the Texans, with the disgruntled Cooks likely on his way out.

Kansas City Chiefs (Week 18 @ Las Vegas Raiders)

The Chiefs are still in the running for the No. 1 seed. Clinch No. 1 seed with win and if CIN-BUF is not replayed.

  • Similar split specialized backfield usage for the Chiefs that we have seen in recent weeks. Essentially a 50/50 split with Isiah Pacheco (55% opportunity share, 9 carries for 31 yards and 1 TD) and 2023 free agent Jerick McKinnon (40% opportunity share, 5 catches for 52 yards and 2 TDs).
  • From Weeks 10-17, both KC running backs were top-21 half-point scorers.
  • McKinnon: RB7 points per game, third in RB receptions at 35, and 7 receiving TDs.
  • Pacheco: RB21 points per game, 6th in rushing yards at 569.
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling ran the most routes for KC on Sunday (87%), followed by JuJu Smith-Schuster (71%), Kadarius Toney (33%) and Justin Watson (33%).
  • MVS saw over 100 air yards but caught just 2 passes for 26 yards.
  • Smith-Schuster ranks second on the team with 15 red-zone targets this season but has caught just one for a TD.
  • Rookie Skyy Moore was targeted on 36% of his routes (25% snap share, 4 targets). Toney’s target rate per route run finished at 27%. The ex-Giants WR’s target rate per route run (23%) ranks first among all Chiefs WRs this season.
  • After Tyreek Hill left the Chiefs, there was a massive hole in the team’s red zone offense. Travis Kelce fully took over that role. He not only led the Chiefs in red-zone targets, he led the entire NFL in that category with 28 red-zone targets. He also finished 1st in red-zone TDs (10). DK Metcalf and Justin Jefferson tied for 2nd with 26 each.
  • Interestingly enough, Ja’Marr Chase actually led the league in red-zone targets per game, commanding 22 in 11 games played (two per game). Should Chase push his former LSU teammate for fantasy WR1 status in 2023, red-zone usage would be his path to success.

Denver Broncos (Week 18 versus Los Angeles Chargers)

LA is playing starters even though they have clinched a playoff spot. Although they clinch the No. 5 seed if the Ravens lose at 1 pm, giving them absolutely nothing to play for during their game.

  • The interim head coach kept things pretty simple with the Broncos offense, carrying over what little worked before into Week 17. Latavius Murray operated as the RB1, but Chase Edmonds was also very involved, especially on passing downs. Edmonds ran more routes than Murray, but the latter saw more targets (6 vs. 3). Snaps were a near dead-even split in favor of Murray (60% vs. 59%).
  • Murray is a free agent in 2023 (as is Mike Boone) so Edmonds is definitely showcasing for a potential role/job alongside a healthy Javonte Williams next year.
  • Marlon Mack was placed on after suffering a hamstring injury.
  • Jerry Jeudy led Denver with a 22% target share, catching 7 passes for 38 yards in Week 17. Hard to not view Jeudy as the clear-cut No. 1 Denver WR based on his high command of targets when healthy in 2022.
  • No player scored more fantasy points in PPR with a sub-75% overall route participation than Jeudy in 2022.
  • Courtland Sutton ties a bow in 2022 with just 11 red-zone targets, catching only 1 TD. Woof.
  • FREE Albert Okwuegbunam. The highly-touted draft pick from fall fantasy drafts drew the start in Week 17 with Greg Dulcich out due to a hamstring injury. He ran a route on 60% of the dropbacks catching 3 of 6 targets for a team-leading 45 receiving yards and 1 TD. YTLSI.

Miami Dolphins (Week 18 versus New York Jets)

Miami is playing for the playoffs, while the Jets have been eliminated from postseason contention.

  • Raheem Mostert drew the start in Week 17, but Jeff Wilson edged him out in snaps (65% vs. 42%), carries (15 for 45 vs. 9 for 29) and backfield opportunities (22 vs. 17). Both RBs were heavily targeted in the passing game (7-plus targets), but Wilson ran the majority of routes (58% vs. 38%). It was pretty similar to last week, but the gap in touches/volume favored Wilson more than Mostert, despite the latter scoring more fantasy points due to receptions and TDs.
  • Who Miami targets at running back this offseason will be important to track for fantasy purposes, as their explosive offense lends itself to a friendly fantasy-scoring environment. Mostert, Wilson, and Myles Gaskin are all unrestricted free agents, while Salvon Ahmed is a restricted free agent.
  • Tyreek Hill tied Davante Adams with the most targets of 20-plus air yards this season (37), but stood alone with the most receptions on those throws (19). The Cheetah also led the entire NFL in air yards (2,027).
  • Mike Gesicki posted a meager 8% target share in an offense that has no use for him. Would hope he finds himself in a more favorable situation in 2023 where his receiving abilities can be taken full advantage of. Perhaps 2023’s version of this year’s Evan Engram is in Gesicki’s future.

New England Patriots (Week 18 @ Buffalo Bills)

The Patriots get into the playoffs with a win.

  • Damien Harris finally made his return to the Patriots starting lineup in Week 17, playing 48% of the snaps while carrying the ball 9 times for 32 yards. His return put a massive damper into the Rhamondre Stevenson usage, who played just 57% of the snaps with 12 backfield opportunities (identical to Harris).
  • However, Harris is an impending free agent, which suggests that Stevenson’s role/production in 2023 will be more of what we saw from Weeks 5-16 when Harris was either not active or not 100% when playing. Even when Harris played alongside Stevenson, the Patriots RB finished third in route participation (58%) and targets (82) among running backs.
  • And remember Stevenson’s strong 2022 campaign was not fueled by touchdowns. In fact, Stevenson was one of the worst RBs converting from inside the 10-yard line as he scored just thrice despite 19 goal-line carries. Harris has also scored thrice from inside the 10 this year – on just 6 carries.
  • Rookie Tyquan Thornton also seems to have carved out the No. 2 role for the Patriots moving forward. He commanded a 22% target share and 55% air yards share (5 targets of 20-plus air yards) in Week 17, going 3-60-1 on 7 targets. He also tied Jakobi Meyers in routes run. Both Meyers and Nelson Agholor are impending free agents.

Indianapolis Colts (Week 18 versus Houston Texans)

Both Texans and Colts have nothing to play for (pride…maybe?)

  • Zack Moss remained the Colts starting running back in Week 17 (58% opportunity share, 15 carries for 74 yards), but he also saw zero targets despite running the most RB routes. Moss seems like he’s in the driver’s seat to be Jonathan Taylor‘s direct backup in 2023 with both Deon Jackson and Jordan Wilkins slated to hit free agency.
  • Michael Pittman kept on being a true alpha – 30% target share, 6-41-1 – and also scored.
  • 2023 free agent Parris Campbell finished second in targets (6, 22%) and led the team in receiving yards (52) in Week 17.
  • Pittman will be an interesting buy-low candidate after he failed to deliver on his Round 3 ADP. Still commanded an elite 27% target share, but the yardage and TDs just weren’t there in the Colts anemic offense.
  • Rookie Jelani Woods remained in the TE1 chair, playing ahead of Mo Alie-Cox with Kylen Granson inactive. Woods ran a route on 50% of dropbacks and played 60% of the snaps. Also caught 3-of-4 targets for 19 yards. It’s too bad all 3 tight ends are under contract with the Colts in 2023.

New York Giants (Week 18 @ Philadelphia Eagles)

The Giants have clinched the wild card spot and will likely rest starters while the Eagles need to win to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

  • Since Week 13, Darius Slayton has been more of a number 2 than true No. 1, actually trailing both Isaiah Hodgins (22%) and Richie James Jr. (23%) in target share, receptions and fantasy points scored.
  • That trend continued in Week 17, when Slayton caught just 2 passes for 14 yards on 3 targets. Hodgins commanded a 22% target share and caught 4 passes for 42 yards and one TD. James Jr. took advantage of the favorable matchup in the slot versus Indianapolis and caught all 7 of his targets (30%) for 76 yards and 1 touchdown.
  • Hodgins is the only Giants WR of their top-3 under contract in 2023.
  • However, they will get rookie Wan’Dale Robinson back from injury at some point, and he could benefit greatly from taking on the James role from the slot. Robinson earned a 24% target rate per route run when healthy this season, playing 81% of his snaps from the slot.

Philadelphia Eagles (Week 18 versus the New York Giants)

The Giants have clinched the wild card spot and will likely rest starters while the Eagles need to win to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.

  • Miles Sanders dominated the Eagles backfield with a 71% opportunity share in Week 17. Boston Scott and Kenneth Gainwell combined for two carries and three targets. Sanders was not targeted.
  • Scott and Sanders are free agents in 2023.
  • Over the last 2 weeks, DeVonta Smith has earned a 38% target share and 114 receiving yards per game. Dallas Goedert‘s return has not had a negative impact on Smith’s production.
  • Smith’s impressive second-year stint can be tied back to his elite usage, as he finished 4th in route participation (96%) ahead of teammate A.J. Brown (92%). The Slim Reaper scored just 8 fewer fantasy points in PPR than former Alabama teammate Jaylen Waddle.

New Orleans Saints (Week 18 versus Carolina Panthers)

Saints and Panthers have both been eliminated from playoff contention.

  • Alvin Kamara rushed 16 times for 74 rushing yards but finished with just one reception on 1 target in Week 17. Kamara has not caught more than 2 passes in a single game since Week 12. Weeks 5-12, he never caught fewer than 3 balls in any contest. His target share has dipped from 22% to 12%.
  • Taysom Hill almost totaled Kamara’s exact volume, earning 14 carries for 46 yards and 1 rushing TD to go along with 1 catch for 9 yards. Hill doubled Kamara’s carries inside the 10-yard line (4 vs. 2).
  • Hill finished second behind only Kelce in total touches among players with TE status this season (99).
  • Juwan Johnson led the Saints with a 30% target share catching 5 balls for 62 yards in Week 17.
  • Rookie Rashid Shaheed out-targeted Chris Olave (again, 6 vs. 4) and led the team with 79 receiving yards. Shaheed owns a 22.6% target share since Week 13. He also ranks 3rd among WRs with at least 30 targets in yards per route run (2.79)
  • However, Olave ends his rookie season 8th in total air yards (1,531) while commanding a 25% target share.
  • Shaheed seems like a guarantee to be a part of the Saints starting WR room next year with Deonte Harty, Jarvis Landry and Marquez Callaway all free agents.
  • Eno Benjamin played ahead of David Johnson as the No. 2 running back. Worth stashing Benjamin as he is the only RB under contract next year for the Saints not-named Kamara – who may face a suspension for legal reasons.

Carolina Panthers (Week 18 @ New Orleans Saints)

Saints and Panthers have both been eliminated from playoff contention.

  • D’Onta Foreman led the Panthers backfield with the start and 13 carries for 35 yards in Week 17. Zero targets which has been the case most of the season. Teammate Chuba Hubbard rushed just thrice for 12 yards and caught 3 targets for 53 yards. Foreman is a free agent in 2023, but Hubbard is still under contract.
  • D.J. Moore did what he usually does: 32% target share, 117 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. In 5 games with Sam Darnold at quarterback this season, Moore owns a 30% target share and is averaging over 75 receiving yards per game.
  • Moore’s 2022 campaign was full of ups and downs (as to be expected with a rotating QB carousel), but the fact remains true that he is an uber-talented wide receiver. His 54% team air yards share ranks first among all players in 2023 and is 11% points higher than the next closest player (43%, Amari Cooper).
  • DJM also finished No. 1 in WOPR (weighted opportunity), which further solidifies his sheer dominance in the Panthers passing attack. His 98% route participation also ranked the highest among all players.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 18 @ Atlanta Falcons)

Tampa Bay likely resting starters to some extent with No. 4 seed locked, Falcons playing for nothing

  • Rachaad White and Leonard Fournette split backfield touches nearly 50/50 in Week 17, with the rookie slightly edging out the veteran in touches (16 vs. 14) and snaps played. He also started and ran more routes. However, Lenny bogarted 3 carries inside the 10-yard line but just failed to score a TD. Neither were efficient as rushers or receivers; as both were held under 30 receiving yards and 30 rushing yards.
  • Mike Evans cashed in on his pent-up touchdown regression catching 3 TDs on 10 catches for 207 receiving yards (29% target share). His 30 deep targets in 2022 ranked 3rd among all players, but he caught just 12 of them.
  • Rookie tight end Cade Otton ran a route on 85% of dropbacks (elite) and commanded 3 red-zone targets on 6 total targets but did not score. Cameron Brate was a healthy scratch which put Otton into a full-time role.

Cleveland Browns (Week 18 @ Pittsburgh Steelers)

The Steelers are playing for playoff spot.

  • Kareem Hunt‘s usage finally hit rock bottom on Sunday, with him taking a backseat to rookie Jerome Ford. Ford compiled 5 carries for 9 yards, while Hunt was limited to 2 carries for zero yards (one carry inside the 10-yard line) and 1 catch for -1 yards.
  • Hunt’s underwhelming usage throughout the entire 2022 season has been extremely bizarre, and it strongly suggests that the 2023 free agent will almost certainly be on another team next season as he enters his age 28-season.
  • D’Ernest Johnson is also a free agent, but he has seen almost zero playing time all season.
  • Amari Cooper only caught 3 passes but finished with 105 yards and two TDs. I’d be excited about the future of not just Cooper, but all the full-time players in this offense with Deshaun Watson next season. Both Donovan Peoples-Jones – typically runs more routes every week than Cooper, 92% route participation through all of 2022 – and David Njoku – top-10 route participation among tight ends – are under contract in 2023.
  • Njoku could absolutely explode in 2023, considering his 2022 usage as a full-time player that the Browns have committed to. He finished second among TEs in red-zone targets (19, 10th overall) but only converted 3 into touchdowns.

Washington Commanders (Week 18 versus Dallas Cowboys)

Cowboys playing for playoff seeding combined with losses by 49ers and Eagles, Washington eliminated from postseason

  • Brian Robinson Jr. got fed without Antonio Gibson, carrying the ball 24 times for 87 rushing yards (64% opportunity share). Although he went 0-for-2 at the goal line and was vulture by his QB. And the team replaced AG’s role as a receiver with Jonathan Williams who commanded 5 targets and 3 catches in addition to 9 carries for 30 yards. Williams also ran a route on 66% of dropbacks.
  • Robinson finishes the fantasy regular season 13th in carries, but with just 2 rushing TDs.
  • Terry McLaurin suffered at the hands of Carson Wentz, seeing just 5 targets (18%) and catching 2 for 25 yards in Week 17. Woof.
  • Tight end Logan Thomas was Wentz’s go-to target for the second straight game commanding a 25% target share (6-56-0). He ran a route on 100% of the dropbacks.
  • Rookie Jahan Dotson also saw 7 targets and commanded 112 air yards. He also led the team in routes run.

San Francisco 49ers (Week 18 versus Arizona Cardinals)

Cardinals playing for nothing, 49ers are playing for a chance at No. 1 seed.

  • Christian McCaffrey does it ALL. 19 carries for 121 yards and 1 rushing TD while playing 85% of the snaps in Week 17. 88% of the backfield opportunities. No other RB for the 49ers got more than 2 touches.
  • Brandon Aiyuk: 9-101-1 on a team-high 12 targets (35% target share). Aiyuk was just one of six players this season to run a route on at least 96% of team dropbacks.
  • George Kittle scores AGAIN: 4-23-1 on 8 targets.
  • Aiyuk and Kittle combined for 61% of the team’s targets.
  • Jauan Jennings operated as WR2 running a route on 89% of dropbacks in Week 17.

Las Vegas Raiders (Week 18 versus Kansas City Chiefs)

The Chiefs are still in the running for the No. 1 seed. Clinch No. 1 seed with win and if CIN-BUF is not replayed.

  • Davante Adams brought his A-Game with Jarrett Stidham under center. The Raiders WR1 caught 7 balls for 153 yards and 2 TDs on a team-high 11 targets (35% target share).
  • His 33% target share ranks first among all receivers in 2022.
  • Josh Jacobs role seemed a bit lighter than usual, with Brandon Bolden totaling 8 carries for 34 yards. The 2023 free agent still got his – 17 for 69 and 1 rushing TD, 5 targets – so I wouldn’t be overly concerned about his usage in Week 18.
  • Jacobs’ 83% opportunity share led all RBs in 2022.
  • Darren Waller ran the same number of routes as Foster Moreau (61%), which continues his lackluster usage. However, there’s no doubt Waller is being hyper-targeted when he does run routes, as he was targeted on 5 routes for 72 receiving yards and 1 TD. 4 of his 5 targets were on 20-plus air yard throws.

New York Jets (Week 18 @ Miami Dolphins)

Miami is playing for the playoffs, while the Jets have been eliminated from postseason contention.

  • The matchup was present for Zonovan Knight to be productive, but the negative game flow put him in a tough spot. Knight was only able to muster 8 carries for 27 yards and 2 catches for 10 yards.
  • Ty Johnson was the Jets most involved RB drawing the start and totaling 13 opportunities (46% opportunity share) on a team-high 47% snap share. Michael Carter was not involved, totaling just 3 touches. Seeing Johnson be the clear favorite over Carter was definitely different usage from what we have seen in the past with this coaching staff when both guys are healthy.
  • Garrett Wilson got the targets (11, 24%) but the poor defensive matchup and lack of “effective” Mike White limited him to 3 catches for 18 yards. His 127 air yards led to little real yardage. Still, Wilson concludes his rookie year with a 24% target share and a 86% route participation despite not being a full-time player until Week 8.

Seattle Seahawks (Week 18 versus Los Angeles Rams)

The Seahawks are playing for a playoff berth.

  • Ken Walker got FED. 23 carries for 133 rushing yards. He also commanded all 4 carries inside the 10-yard line. However, DeeJay Dallas reared his ugly head with 7 carries for 43 yards of his own and 4 targets for 55 receiving yards. Dallas also ran just one fewer route than Walker (14 vs. 15). At times this season we have seen Walker earn a large number of targets and ran a surplus of routes.
  • Heading into 2023, I would hardly view Dallas as a reason to “fade” Walker for fear that he won’t be used as much in the receiving game. But he will likely be a decent handcuff option as he seems primed to take on the No. 2 role with Travis Homer and Rashaad Penny slated for free agency.
  • Tight end Colby Parkinson was the main benefactor of the Will Dissly injury. He played 81% of the snaps, ran a route on 77% of dropbacks and commanded a team-high 25% target share. All superior usage metrics to Noah Fant.
  • Tyler Lockett got banged-up in Week 17 as well, playing just 32% of the snaps.

Los Angeles Rams (Week 18 @ Seattle Seahawks)

The Seahawks are playing for a playoff berth.

  • Consider me back in on Cam Akers come 2023 fantasy football drafts. The three-down bellcow role in the Rams offense has been all Akers for the past month, and the usage didn’t stop in Week 17. He carried the ball 19 times for 123 yards earning a 91% opportunity share on a 78% snap share and 58% route participation in Week 17. Kyren Williams and Malcolm Brown have been regulated to one-two touches per week. From Weeks 15-17, Akers is the RB5 in points per game and the RB12 in expected points per game.
  • Don’t forget about Cooper Kupp next year. Obviously, it was disappointing due to injury, but he still ranked second in target share (31%, tied with Tyreek Hill) in the games he did participate in.

Los Angeles Chargers (Week 18 @ Denver Broncos)

LA is playing starters even though they have clinched a playoff spot. Although they clinch the No. 5 seed if the Ravens lose at 1 pm, giving them absolutely nothing to play for during their game.

  • In Week 17, Mike Williams led the way with a 32% target share commanding 94 receiving yards on 7 catches (10 targets).
  • Most of the Chargers’ usage metrics are down on account of them pulling starters early in the 4th quarter. Hence. Larry Rountree‘s random 10 carries for an atrocious 15 yards.
  • If the Chargers do decide to rest their starters at some point in Week 18, will we see more of WR DeAndre Carter. He has a contract incentive that awards him $250,000 with two receptions.

Green Bay Packers (Week 18 versus Detroit Lions)

Lions and Packers both playing for playoff berths. However, Lions will be eliminated if Seahawks win earlier on Sunday.

  • Don’t necessarily be fooled by Romeo Doubs‘ 4 target number in Week 17, as three of his targets came on the final drive from Jordan Love.
  • Allen Lazard was the true target leader with 6 targets coming from Aaron Rodgers (25%). Two of his targets came in the red zone.
  • Lazard has been low-key used aggressively downfield this season, ranking 5th in deep targets (26). However he only caught 8 of them.
  • Aaron Jones (14 for 111) and A.J. Dillon (12 for 41 and 1 TD) split touches as they often do. Although it’s worth noting that Dillon played more snaps and ran more routes (38% vs. 35%), albeit Jones caught more passes (2).
  • Christian Watson still was heavily involved – 5 targets, 29% target rate and 65% route participation – but he was not productive. The rookie caught just one pass for 11 yards despite seizing 131 air yards (49% air yards share).
  • Be aggressive drafting Watson in 2023. His 25% target rate per route run is nothing but impressive. 14th among all WRs with at least 60 targets. If he takes over the downfield looks in 2023 that Lazard earned, prepare for a massive second-year leap.

Minnesota Vikings (Week 18 @ Chicago Bears)

Vikings will either be No. 2 or No. 3 seed depending on outcome of the 49ers game and if they win over the Bears.

  • Minnesota got blown out by the Packers in Week 17, so there are no major takeaways from a usage standpoint. Everyone reprised their same roles.
  • Although it is worth mentioning that Adam Thielen continues to struggle so much that he is being out-produced by T.J. Hockenson (34% target share in Week 17) and No. 3 WR K.J. Osborn.
  • Thielen has just a 11% target share in the last 3 games. 7 catches for 90 yards total.
  • The Vikings have an out in Thielen’s contract in 2023. Needless to say, they would be wise to spend aggressively in either free agency or the draft to gain a new No. 2 to operate alongside Jefferson.

Pittsburgh Steelers (Week 18 versus Cleveland Browns)

The Steelers are playing for playoff spot.

  • Najee Harris (22 for 111 rushing) and Jaylen Warren (12 for 76 rushing) combined for 40 total backfield opportunities in Week 17 versus the Ravens. Both saw 3 targets. Harris played the most snaps (64% vs. 40%).
  • And despite all Harris’ ups-and-downs in 2022, he still operated as a pseudo-workhorse ranking 6th in opportunity share (70%) and 8th in total touches.
  • Diontae Johnson led the way with 7 targets (26%) but struggled with Kenny Pickett again, catching just 2 passes for 35 yards. Johnson has underwhelmed with Pickett all season; he has not topped more than 65 receiving yards or a weekly finish better than WR37.
  • But that’s par for the course with a rookie QB under center, so I’d expect a major bounce back for Johnson with Pickett entering Year 2. Johnson’s ability to command targets – 27% target share and 137 targets (7th) in 2022 – suggests he is a prime candidate for positive regression in many facets.
  • He scored zero TDs from Weeks 1-17, despite commanding 14 red-zone targets. Johnson also suffered horribly when targeted downfield, as he captured just four of his 24 targets of 20-plus air yards. His combined downfield targets and red-zone targets were the most of any player to not score in 2022. Those trends don’t tend to carry over from year-to-year. Buy-low on Johnson.
  • Pat Freiermuth finished 2nd with 6 targets for a team-high 36 receiving yards. More importantly, he retained his elite role, running a route on 93% of dropbacks. Pat Freiermuth has the chance to jump into the elite tier of tight ends in 2023, after finishing his 2nd season 6th in target share (21%) and 5th in target rate per route run (24%).
  • George Pickens‘ role also remained elite, with him running a route on 97% of dropbacks in Week 17. And although I am bullish on Johnson in 2023, Pickens is equally appealing. He commanded one more deep target than Johnson (25) and was, more importantly, more efficient, catching 14 deep balls – tied for 4th among all WRs.
  • Pickens was also just one of 16 players to run a route on at least 90% of his team’s dropbacks this season (91%).

Baltimore Ravens (Week 18 @ Cincinnati Bengals)

Ravens/Bengals playing for playoff seeding. Baltimore could get No. 5 seed if they win and Chargers lose. Baltimore plays before Los Angeles.

  • When the chips are on the line, the Ravens are turning to their RB1, J.K. Dobbins. Dobbins was by far the most involved running back on Sunday night, carrying the ball 17 times for 93 yards. 85% opportunity share and matched season-high 50% snap share. Gus Edwards had just 3 carries.
  • Mark Andrews finally had a good game with Tyler Huntley at QB: 9-100-0 on a 45% target share. Isaiah Likely came away with the TD, while running the 3rd-most routes on the team. Both Andrews and Likely earned 36% target rates.
  • This team desperately needs Rashod Bateman back in the fold in 2023. From Demarcus Robinson to Devin Duvernay, the Baltimore Ravens WR room boasts some of the worst WR efficiency metrics as a group. Bateman is the one glimmer of hope as he averaged a 23% target rate and 2.38 yards per route run in a truncated 2022 campaign.
