2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: O’Cyrus Torrence (OG – Florida)

O’Cyrus Torrence (OG – Florida)

6’5″ – 347 lbs.

Background:

Spent his first three seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette, where he stepped into the starting left guard role in the second game of the season and retained it for the remainder. Flipped to right guard in 2020 and stayed there in 2021 and 2022, his final season coming with the Gators. Racked up 47 career starts and allowed just one hit and no sacks during that span.

Positives:

Highly experienced four-year starter with excellent metrics and experience at both guard spots. Gargantuan blocker with what looks like impressive length. Highly consistent on a snap-to-snap basis, with polished technique and a tough temperament. Smart player whose understanding of positioning in the run game is excellent. Shows good leg drive after contact to generate push and maul in a phone booth. Has a very powerful shove to knock defenders off-balance and get the upper hand at the beginning of snaps. Able to pull to the left and crush defenders on the backside when executing gap concepts. Surprisingly effective at lining up opponents at the second level. Never allowed a sack in school. Stonewalls opponents on contact in pass protection, being virtually impossible to bull-rush. Gets good arm extension and flashes the ability to knock defenders off-balance with his punch. Shows good pre-snap awareness and keeps his head on a swivel in pass protection. Was penalized just two times as a junior and zero as a senior.

Negatives:

Really only had one season against a high level of competition. Has the athletic limitations you’d expect from a player with his size, relying on effort rather than quickness or explosiveness to execute in space. Overall bend and flexibility are average. Relies on his bulk rather than lateral quickness to defend against gap-shooting under tackles. Would like to see a more consistent killer instinct, more workmanlike than nasty, being content to get the job done instead of burying opponents.

Summary:

Very much the type of player his physical profile and metrics would suggest: a massive, immovable object with plenty of functional strength and the consistency, intelligence, polish, and toughness teams look for while also being more effective than expected when it comes to pulling and engaging defenders at the second level. Given his extensive experience and the way he dominated SEC competition this past season, looks like a safe bet to end up as a plug-and-play starter who should enjoy a long career playing guard for a team with a gap/power blocking scheme. Rock solid.

Projection: Round 1-2
