2023 NFL Draft Guide: Prospect Rankings & Player Profiles

Keondre Coburn (DL – Texas)

6’2″ – 343 lbs.

Background:

Fifth-year defensive lineman who played sparingly in 2018 before working his way into the starting lineup the following year in what ended up being the season where he enjoyed the heaviest usage of his career (478 snaps); subsequent seasons have typically seen him on the field for just under 400 snaps. Lines have been similar in each year; 24-4.5-2.0 in 2019, 25-4.5-1.0 in 2020, 15-2.0-1.0 in 2021 and 29-4.0-2.5 this past season.

Positives:

Experienced four-year starter with consistent play over his collegiate career. Massive nose tackle with rare size, even at the pro level. Played different techniques for the Longhorns, from zero to three-technique. Fires out low to win the leverage battle. Shows a good work rate to pursue ball carriers; brings a certain level of intensity to the game. Easily able to hold his ground and eat space in the run game. Aggressive bull-rusher with good leg drive. Heavy, violent hands to ragdoll opponents and disengage when two-gapping. Does a pretty good job of trying to skinny through and threaten gaps. Mixes in a swim to try and create disruption in the backfield. Not a one-trick pony on passing downs; mixes in rips and other moves to give some variety to his approach.

Negatives:

Older than some of the other prospects in the class. Typically played only about half of the defensive snaps per game over the course of his career, only exceeding 40 snaps in a game once this past season. Lacks explosiveness, relying on his strength and work rate to beat opponents. Didn’t draw as many double-teams as some of the other nose tackles in the class during the games reviewed. Intermittent balance issues when coming off of blocks. Will get a little bit out of control and end up on the ground more often than he should. Mixes in different moves but has never been much of a pass-rusher; will likely be seen as an early-down/rotational option only.

Summary:

Not quite as athletic as some of the other mammoth nose tackles in the class, but is more intense than many of his peers and has all the size and power teams look for at the position. Has traits that should allow him to contribute relatively early as a rotational run-stuffer, likely playing the zero-technique in an odd front. Overall lack of positional value in the modern game may push him into the third day.

Projection: Round 4
