2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jaren Hall (QB – Brigham Young)

6’1″ – 205 lbs.
Background:
Father Kalin played at Brigham Young, mother was a gymnast there, and brothers KJ and Kyson currently play running back and receiver, respectively. Also played on the baseball team in 2019 and 2020. Served a mission in California. Threw 46 passes in 2019 over three starts (420 yards, one touchdown) but didn’t take over the starting job until 2021, succeeding Zach Wilson. Threw for 2,583 yards (63.9%, 8.7 YPA), 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions that year, then boosted his output to 3,171 yards (66.0%, 8.4 YPA), 31 touchdowns, and six interceptions this past year.

Positives:
Two-year starter with a favorable trajectory. Relaxed footwork on his drops without a heel click. Gets the ball out on time in the quick game. Throwing mechanics look good, with a high release point. Looks calm under pressure. Doesn’t take unnecessary risks with the ball; knows when to hit a check-down or kill a play. Flashes the ability to make pro-style throws with anticipation; despite his lack of ideal arm talent, is a very good deep-ball thrower who gets the job done with touch, timing, and anticipation. Throws a catchable ball with appropriate touch, solid placement, and a tight spiral. Unlike many other college quarterbacks, he didn’t need to work play-action to succeed. An above-average athlete who’s able to escape pressure and buy time, either by fleeing the pocket or by climbing. Can complete passes on bootlegs to his right or after pirouetting to the left away from pressure; he keeps his eyes downfield while on the move.
Negatives:
Over-aged and will be 25 as a rookie. Has a reasonably thick build but is on the small side for a pro quarterback. Offense featured a lot of high-percentage rhythm throws off of predetermined reads. Arm talent is just adequate; he doesn’t have the most juice on his throws and may struggle to fit passes into tight windows at the pro level. Placement on deep balls down the right sideline is iffy. Really struggled under pressure in 2022, completing just a third of such throws, with 4.9 YPA and three touchdowns to four interceptions. Occasional throws without a foundation lead to accuracy issues. A good enough athlete to escape pressure but may not have the raw speed to pick up chunks with his legs on a consistent basis.
Summary:
He is a quarterback who gets the fundamentals right, makes good decisions with the ball, and shows impressive touch and placement to most of the field, but whose tools are somewhat limited, being shorter than a typical passer and lacking ideal velocity on his throws. Those limitations may lead him to be viewed as more of a long-term backup or spot-starter at the next level, but he could carve out a long career as a smart and reliable game manager in an offense based around short, rhythm-based passes. Probably more of a mid-round option.
Projection: Round 4-5
