2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Anton Harrison (OT – Oklahoma)

Anton Harrison (OT – Oklahoma)

6’5″ – 315 lbs.

Background:

Four-star recruit who played 333 snaps at left tackle as a freshman, allowing just one sack, two hits, and four pressures while being penalized once. Took over the starting role last season, playing 671 snaps and allowing 2-1-14 with six penalties. Was benched for the team’s bowl game but still played 21 snaps. Started the first game of this past year at right tackle, then flipped back over to the left and started eleven games there, sitting out of the bowl game.

Positives:

Level of play has been pretty consistent since his freshman season. Solidly-built left tackle who was listed at 332 pounds as a recruit but has slimmed down since. Very smooth mover who was frequently asked to execute blocks on the move or in space and does an excellent job of lining up defenders and engaging with form. Can pull across the line and smash defenders in the hole or at the second level. Has the short area quickness to cross a defender’s place and seal them off from the play direction. Gets downfield and disrupts opponents on chunk plays. Overall contact balance is solid. Shows the ability to chip one defender and climb to the second level. Works well on double teams. Protects the edge with knee-bend and light feet, showing above-average lateral quickness. Able to make it to the edge against speed without abandoning his technique. Active with his hands and does a good job of resetting them. Drops an early anchor when he’s playing within his frame.

Negatives:

Height is on the low end of what teams usually look for in a tackle. Mostly lined up in two-point stances and may have a slight adjustment. Still has some technique/balance issues to work on; wins because of his physical and athletic traits on too many snaps. Can play a little bit upright at times; not as much of a knee-bender in the run game, occasionally lapsing into leaning or bending at the waist. Doesn’t always show a killer instinct to dominate. Inconsistent leg drive after contact. Would like to see him generate more torque with his hands/upper body; overall understanding of positioning isn’t as advanced as you’d like. More of a shover than someone who locks on and sustains through the whistle. Some balance issues in pass protection when he tries to play outside his frame; tendency to dip his head into contact. Committed fourteen penalties over the past two years.

Summary:

A physical/athletic specimen who has excellent range in the run game and who is laterally quick enough to defend the edge against speed or hold up against opposing bull-rushers on passing downs, but who is still a work in progress from a fundamental/technical standpoint, with balance issues and other raw aspects of his game which prevent him from being as effective as he could. With further strides and more glass in his diet, could end up being a dominant tackle but could easily end up frustrating by leaving too much on the table.

Projection: Round 2
