Jakub Vrana (C, LW – DET): 36.4% rostered
Jakub Vrana entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program just two games into the season, but the 26-year-old appears to be on the verge of a turn to action.
Vrana is currently on a conditioning stint with AHL Grand Rapids, which is a solid indication that his return is imminent. Regardless of how many games it takes, Vrana should certainly be considered if you have a wing spot open on your roster.
He tallied two points in his two games this season after a solid 19 points in 26 games last season. Loaded with skill, Vrana has seemingly yet to reach his ceiling as he’s been bothered by injuries and simply fell out of favor in Washington before being moved to Detroit at the 2021 trade deadline.
This is pure speculation on my part, but with Tyler Bertuzzi sidelined into mid-January, it would make sense for Vrana to skate with Dylan Larkin on the top line and top power-play unit upon his return. Vrana has top-line ability and could form a nice duo with Larkin atop the Red Wings’ depth chart up front. Michael Rasmussen and David Perron are currently occupying the first-line wing spots.
At just 23 years old, Vrana notched 52 points in 69 games with the 2019-20 Capitals. Three years later, now could be the time when the Czech breaks out for good.
James van Riemsdyk (LW – PHI): 11.3% rostered
There’s a serious case to be made that James van Riemsdyk isn’t getting the fantasy love he deserves.
It’s not a complete shock, as he’s regressed over the last few seasons and plays on a poor Flyers club, but if we block out that noise and focus on the numbers and opportunity, the picture can become clearer value-wise.
He’s been limited to just 15 games on the season but has five goals and 13 points in that time along with a solid 34 shots per game. van Riemsdyk has also collected four power-play points on the season. If paced out over a full 82-game season, van Riemsdyk could have reached a quality 22 power-play points on the season.
Sure, the Flyers sit 29th in overall offense and 31st in power play, and while he skates on the top line, it’s currently alongside youngsters Morgan Frost and Owen Tippett. That said, he’s still not a liability in the plus-minus department with a plus-one rating on the season.
He’s contributing in the goals, assists, power-play points and shots on goal column as you could do a lot worse than JVR on your squad.
Brock Boeser (RW – VAN): 50.3% rostered
As you may have noticed throughout the season, we’ve tried to identify players rostered at less than 50% to provide the most value, but even with Boeser a few hairs above that threshold it makes sense to get his name in here.
After all, the American winger is heating up. Boeser has notched four points over his last three games and it’s no surprise as to why. Boeser has moved onto a line with Canucks captain Bo Horvat and Ilya Mikheyev, as those two helped Boeser notch a three-point game his last time out.
After a tough start that involved injuries and controversy, Boeser now has 20 points in 26 games. He’s also now skating on the top power-play unit and while he has just three man-advantage points on the season, that number should rise as a member of the top unit.
With just six goals on 60 shots, his 10% shooting rate is notably below his 13% career mark, and given the recent promotion, he should start finding the back of the bet more often as well.
Loaded with promise originally entering the league in the 2016-17 season, Boeser has cooled off after a hot start to his career. If he can find that consistency with a promotion up the depth chart he is a steal off the wire.
Brandon Hagel (LW, RW – TB): 40.6% rostered
Hagel has been gifted one of the best spots in the NHL on the Lightning top line.
Indeed, the former Chicago Blackhawk is skating alongside Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov not only at 5v5, but he’s also flanking them — and Steven Stamkos — on the club’s top power-play unit. Right then and there, the guy needs serious consideration if he’s still available on your waiver wire.
The 24-year-old has notched 12 goals and 26 points on the season across 34 games as well as four goals and seven points over his last five. Hagel is also a plus-nine on the campaign while at least keeping pace with six power-play points, 59 shots and 25 hits as well. Hagel is producing nicely across the board and it’s no surprise as to why.
As long as he’s logging 18:45 of average ice time with two wildly talented offensive players, Hagel needs to be seriously considered if he’s still available.
