Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback Streamers (Week 15)

Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback Streamers (Week 15)

Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season is in the books and that means the fantasy playoffs have begun. Unfortunately, half of last week’s streamers suffered injuries. Mike White left the game twice against the Buffalo Bills because of a rib injury while Tyler Huntley suffered a concussion against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the other two streamers from last week’s article had at least 17.5 fantasy points.

However, the only easy win was last week’s win. So, let’s look at the top streaming options for Week 15.

All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN 1QB leagues and under 25% in Superflex leagues.

Streaming Targets in 1QB Leagues

Ryan Tannehill (TEN) vs. Los Angeles Chargers (14.7% Rostered)

The veteran Tannehill made last week’s streamers article and played well for fantasy players. He had 254 passing yards, two touchdowns and 17.8 fantasy points against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Furthermore, the former first-round pick has averaged 16.4 fantasy points per game over the past five weeks, scoring 17.5 or more three times. More importantly, Tannehill played well last week despite not having rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks. This week he has another fantasy-friendly matchup.

Los Angeles got a massive win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night. While they held Tua Tagovailoa to only 145 passing yards and 12.6 fantasy points, their defense has struggled to slow down opposing passing attacks this season. The Chargers have surrendered 16.7 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, above the league average. Furthermore, they had given up two or more passing touchdowns in three straight games before last week’s matchup against the Dolphins. Tannehill won’t give fantasy players a 20-plus point performance, but the veteran is a safe floor streaming option.

Taylor Heinicke (WAS) vs. New York Giants (14.1% Rostered)

While the Commanders activated Carson Wentz off the injured reserve list yesterday, Heinicke will remain the starter, at least for now. The former backup has been inconsistent during his time as the starter. However, he’s been a solid streaming option lately. Heinicke has thrown two touchdown passes in his past two games. Furthermore, he has thrown two touchdowns in 57.1% of his starts this season. More importantly, the former Old Dominion quarterback had two passing touchdowns and 17.6 fantasy points against the Giants two weeks ago.

Coming off their bye week, the Commanders have had two weeks to prepare for New York. Meanwhile, the Giants have struggled to slow down quarterbacks lately. Over their past seven games, New York has surrendered 17.4 fantasy points per game to the position. Furthermore, they have given up 14.8 or more fantasy points in all but one of those contests. Last week, Jalen Hurts had his way with New York’s defense. The Giants surrendered 217 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and 30.4 fantasy points to the MVP favorite. While he isn’t the fantasy superstar Hurts is, Heinicke should have another 17-plus point performance in this critical NFC East showdown.

Streaming Targets in Superflex Leagues

Brock Purdy (SF) vs. Seattle Seahawks (7.1% Rostered)

Last week the rookie quarterback made his first career start. Despite a tough matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Purdy had 185 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and scored 21.7 fantasy points in the win. He also added a rushing touchdown. Over the past two weeks, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft has 395 passing yards, five total touchdowns and 36 fantasy points. Unfortunately, Purdy suffered an oblique injury against the Buccaneers. However, he was able to finish the game without a problem. Despite having an MRI done on Monday, the rookie is considered day-to-day and should be ready for Thursday night’s contest.

While the 49ers remain a top team in the NFC despite starting their third quarterback this season, the Seahawks have lost three of their past four games. Last week they lost to the Carolina Panthers at home. While Sam Darnold had only 120 passing yards and 11.8 fantasy points in the win, he had only 24 pass attempts. Meanwhile, Seattle has surrendered 16.2 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, slightly above the league average. However, they have given up 16 or more fantasy points to quarterbacks in over half of the games this season. After scoring 18 fantasy points per game over the past two weeks, Purdy should have another solid performance against the Seahawks.

Matt Ryan (IND) vs. Minnesota Vikings (6.2% Rostered)

Ryan has struggled lately. Over the past three games, the veteran quarterback has thrown three touchdowns compared to six turnovers. Furthermore, he averaged 9.3 fantasy points per game during that span, scoring fewer than 10.2 fantasy points in every contest. However, Ryan faced three elite defenses during that span. Before then, the veteran had scored 22.7 or more fantasy points in two of his previous three starts. More importantly, the former Atlanta Falcon had two passing touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys’ elite defense two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the Vikings have had no answers for opposing passing attacks this season. They have surrendered 19.5 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this year, one of the highest averages in the NFL. Furthermore, Minnesota has given up 300 or more passing yards to quarterbacks in seven of the past eight games, including five straight. During that span, quarterbacks have averaged 21.2 fantasy points per game against the Vikings, scoring 19.5 or more fantasy points in all but two games. If Ryan can protect the ball, the veteran quarterback should score 19 or more fantasy points this week against the NFC North division leaders.

Streamer to Avoid

Jared Goff (DET) vs. New York Jets (44.9% Rostered)

Typically streaming articles tell you which players to target off the waiver wire. However, I will give one quarterback each week that you should avoid.

The Detroit quarterback has been on fire lately. Over the past two weeks, Goff has been the QB3, averaging 335 passing yards, 2.5 touchdowns and 23.9 fantasy points per game. Furthermore, he has thrown two or more touchdowns in three straight games. Goff averaged 21.8 fantasy points per game, scoring 17.6 or more in every matchup during that span. However, Goff averaged only 9.7 fantasy points per game over the previous six games, scoring fewer than 15 fantasy points in all but one contest. While the veteran quarterback has played well lately, he’s faced two awful defenses. Moreover, Goff has scored fewer than 15 fantasy points in nearly half of the games this season.

More importantly, the veteran has an awful matchup this week. The Jets have held quarterbacks to only 14.1 fantasy points per game this season, one of the lower averages in the league. Josh Allen scored 20.6 fantasy points last week against New York. However, 52% of his fantasy production (10.7 fantasy points) came in the running game, something Goff doesn’t offer. Furthermore, the Jets held quarterbacks to only 10.6 fantasy points per game over their previous three contests before last week’s matchup against the Bills. While Goff has played outstanding the past few weeks, the veteran isn’t a worthy streaming option for Week 15.
