Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback Streamers (Week 14)

Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback Streamers (Week 14)

Week 13 of the 2022 NFL season is in the books. Last week’s streamers were mostly successful. The one bust was Jimmy Garoppolo. He scored only 2.2 fantasy points before suffering a broken foot early in the game against the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately, the veteran quarterback will miss the rest of the season because of the injury. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson was awful in his first game played in nearly two years. Yet the Cleveland Browns got the 27-14 win over the Houston Texans, thanks to their defense and special teams units.

However, the only easy win was last week’s win. So, let’s look at the top streaming options for Week 14.

All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN 1QB leagues and under 25% in superflex leagues.

Streaming Targets in 1QB Leagues

Jared Goff  (QB – DET) vs. Minnesota Vikings (29.6% Rostered)

The former No. 1 draft pick made last week’s streamers list and paid off for fantasy players. Goff had 340 passing yards, two touchdowns, and scored 21.6 fantasy points in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 340 passing yards and 21.6 fantasy points were his highest marks since Week 4. More importantly, the veteran quarterback has thrown two touchdowns in back-to-back games and for the third time over the past five weeks. After a stretch of disappointing performances, Goff is producing again for fantasy players. Furthermore, his play should only get better as Jameson Williams gets more involved in the offense.

Goff was an appealing streamer last week because of the matchup. That is the case again this week. The Vikings have been one of the more fantasy friend teams to quarterbacks this season, giving up 19 fantasy points per game to the position. They have given up 10 passing touchdowns over the past six weeks, surrendering two or more scores in 67% of those contests. Furthermore, Minnesota has allowed quarterbacks to throw for 300 or more yards in four straight games and six of the past seven matchups. Unless something happens to Amon-Ra St. Brown, Goff will have no trouble picking apart the Vikings’ secondary.

Mike White (QB – NYJ) vs. Buffalo Bills (13.8% Rostered)

Coming off an impressive performance in Week 12, White got the start again last week for the Jets. Furthermore, the former backup quarterback made the Week 13 streamers list and produced for fantasy players. He had 369 passing yards and scored 17.5 fantasy points against the Vikings despite not throwing a touchdown. More importantly, White has thrown for over 300 yards and scored 17.5 or more fantasy points in both games as a starter this season. Meanwhile, the matchup this week is more fantasy-friendly than it appears.

Buffalo has surrendered only 13.5 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, one of the lowest averages in the league. However, they have struggled to slow down quarterbacks lately. Over the past three weeks, quarterbacks have averaged 253 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and 18.7 fantasy points per game against the Bills. Furthermore, Buffalo surrendered over 300 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and 25.9 fantasy points to Jacoby Brissett a few weeks ago. Whether this AFC East matchup is a tight battle or a blowout by the Bills, White will have plenty of opportunities to score fantasy points in this game.

Streaming Targets in Superflex Leagues

Ryan Tannehill (QB – TEN) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (8.8% Rostered)

While the veteran quarterback doesn’t have the upside needed to warrant a start as a top-12 guy, Tannehill has been the ideal superflex or QB2 option this season. He is averaging 13.3 fantasy points per game, making him the QB23 for the year on a points-per-game basis. However, Tannehill has averaged 14.7 fantasy points per game this season when facing anyone but the Bills. More importantly, the former first-round pick has played well since returning from injury. Over the past four weeks, Tannehill has averaged 255 passing yards and 16 fantasy points per game. Meanwhile, his matchup this week is fantasy-friendly.

The Jaguars have been a fantasy goldmine for opposing quarterbacks this season. They have surrendered 18.9 fantasy points per game to the position this year, one of the highest averages in the league. Furthermore, Jacksonville has given up over 330 passing yards and two touchdowns in two of the past three contests, including last week to Goff. More importantly, quarterbacks have averaged 23.4 fantasy points per game in their past seven matchups against the Jaguars, scoring 21 or more fantasy points in 71.4% of those contests. While he won’t have a 23-point performance this week, Tannehill is a safe streaming option, especially in superflex leagues.

Tyler Huntley (QB – BAL) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (0.3% Rostered)

Unfortunately, Week 13 was full of injuries. Arguably the most impactful injury was Lamar Jackson, who left the game against the Denver Broncos with a knee injury. The backup Huntley played the final three quarters and did an impressive job against the Broncos. Denver had held quarterbacks to only 11.6 fantasy points per game before last week, the second-fewest in the NFL. Yet, Huntley completed 84.4% of his pass attempts for 187 yards and scored 15.6 fantasy points against the Broncos in three quarters of the game. Fantasy players with Jackson on their roster should add Huntley off the waiver wire as insurance.

Assuming Jackson misses this week’s matchup like head coach John Harbaugh expects, Huntley is an excellent streaming option in superflex leagues. The Steelers have surrendered 18 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, one of the higher averages in the NFL. Furthermore, they have given up four passing touchdowns in 25% of their games this season, including just three weeks ago. Meanwhile, Huntley averaged 16 fantasy points per game in his five starts last season, filling in for the franchise quarterback. Hopefully, Jackson can play this week. However, fantasy players should snag Huntley off the waiver wire, especially with six teams on a bye in Week 14.

Streamer to Avoid

Brock Purdy (QB – SF) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0.0% Rostered)

Typically streaming articles tell you which players to target off the waiver wire. However, I will give one quarterback each week that you should avoid.

After Garoppolo suffered the foot injury, Purdy finished the game for the 49ers. The “Mr. Irrelevant” pick of the 2022 NFL Draft had thrown nine passes before Sunday’s game, totaling only 0.9 fantasy points. Yet, he played well against the Dolphins, throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and scoring 14.3 fantasy points. However, Miami had surrendered 20.6 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks before last week’s game, the third-most in the NFL. Furthermore, they didn’t expect or plan for Purdy to play. That won’t be the case this week for the Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has held quarterbacks to only 15.3 fantasy points per game this season, slightly below the league average. However, they have surrendered only 219.8 passing yards, 1.3 passing touchdowns, and 14 fantasy points per game to the position over the past four weeks. With a week to prepare for the seventh-round rookie, expect the Buccaneers to make Purdy’s first career start difficult. While he played well last week against a poor defense, Purdy won’t have a repeat performance against the Buccaneers.
