It’s Friday. You know what that means.
We’ll be looking at players who are widely available and rostered in fewer than 60 percent of fantasy leagues on Yahoo. We’ll be focusing on 8-cat leagues because turnovers are a waste of a category, to be honest.
But if you find the turnovers helpful, let me know. I’m happy to include them if enough of you play in 9-cat leagues.
We’ll be looking at players who can help you in each of the eight categories who you can get before your league-mates catch on.
The eight categories we’ll focus on each week are:
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Blocks
- Threes
- Field-goal percentage
- Free-throw percentage
Let’s get to it.

Points
Tim Hardaway Jr. (SG/SF – DAL) 66%
I’m bending the rules here – as I do every so often, but for the first time this year – as I’m going with a player who is slightly over the threshold that I set of 60 percent rostership. But Hardaway, who has brilliant scoring flashes each year, is on one of his heaters right now. He’s scored at least 17 points in five straight games, hitting at least 22 points in four of those contests. THJ is lighting it up from behind the arc during that stretch, averaging six (!) three-pointers per game.
Rebounds
Mo Wagner (PF/C – ORL) 39%
With Wendell Carter Jr. out, we expected Mo Bamba to be the biggest beneficiary for the Magic. It’s another Mo instead, as Wagner has taken over for Bamba in the starting lineup. And the returns have been, surprisingly, impressive. Wagner has two straight double-doubles for the Magic, averaging 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds over his last two games. Ride the wave for as long as WCJ is out, and hold him to see how the minutes are distributed once he’s back.
Assists
Andrew Nembhard (PG/SG – IND) 52%
Nembhard came back to Earth in his last outing, which makes sense with Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner back for the Pacers. And while the numbers took a drastic hit, the minutes didn’t, as he played more than 30 minutes once again. I’m a big opportunity person; you can’t get an opportunity without the minutes. I’m holding him and buying the proverbial dip.
Steals
Markelle Fultz (PG/SG – ORL) 45%
So, two of his last three games were good, but then he put up essentially no stat line across 28 minutes his last time out. That’s fine, and you’ll have that with Fultz. I’m encouraged by the minutes and his defense. I’m holding Fultz and looking at him to contribute steals, assists, and scoring.
Blocks
Walker Kessler (PF/C – UTA) 15%
Kessler has been quite productive of late for the Jazz, especially over the last three games. The minutes fluctuate, but he’s been a per-minute beast down low for the Jazz. In fact, over the last three games, Kessler has ranked as the No. 36 player in fantasy with a line of 12.7 points, 10.3 boards, 94.1 FG%, 3.3 blocks, and 0.7 assists per game.
Threes
Malik Beasley (SG/SF – UTA) 54%
Steph Curry. Klay Thompson. Anfernee Simons. Damian Lillard. James Harden. Those are the only players who are averaging more three-pointers per game over the last 30 days than Beasley. Beasley, a top-75 player this year, should be rostered in more leagues than he is, and he’s hit four shots from behind the arc in two of his last three games.
Field-goal percentage
Thomas Bryant (C – LAL) 14%
I’m including Byrant here for the second straight week, as his rostership has doubled, but it’s not up enough. The field-goal attempts and offensive involvement aren’t consistent enough to have him lead the way as our points recommendation, but he’s still getting it done from the floor, shooting 70 percent.
Free-throw percentage
Ziaire Williams (SF/PF – MEM) 3%
With this category, we typically highlight a player who doesn’t fit in the other areas but can be a sneak deep-league pickup. This week, it’s Williams. Williams made his season debut after dealing with patellar tendinitis. He only played 19 minutes and didn’t do much to make you look twice in the box score, but he’s expected to play a bigger role this year for the Grizzlies, and once he’s ramped up, he’s back-end worthy in 12-team leagues.
