NHL DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (11/8)

NHL DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (11/8)

After a light two-game slate this past Friday, the NHL welcomes us back with an 11-game slate on Tuesday night. This is ideal since it allows talented, high-usage players to be available and rostered at a discounted salary in DFS. Teams are beginning to establish their identity entering the fourth week of action in the 2022-23 regular season. Boston, New Jersey, Dallas, and Vegas all lead their divisions with double-digit goal differentials, while bottom feeders like Ottawa, Columbus, St. Louis, and San Jose are scrappy and shouldn’t be ignored when constructing DFS builds with such a heavy Tuesday slate.

Reflecting briefly on my recommended picks from last Friday, one player, Mikko Rantanen (RW – Avalanche), delivered a monster performance with four points. This included three goals during Colorado’s 6-3 rout of the Blue Jackets, while Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin (D – Sabres) and Dylan Cozens (C – Sabres) each netted a point in a 5-3 loss to Carolina. Both goaltenders played well, as Antti Raanta (G – Hurricanes) and Alexandar Georgiev (G – Avalanche) both secured wins for their teams in high-scoring affairs. Tage Thompson (C – Sabres) and Brady Skjei (D – Hurricanes) were the duds who failed to return value without points, while Valeri Nichushkin (RW – Avalanche) wound up sitting due to his injury.

Let’s not waste any more time and jump right into eight of my favorite players to add to DFS lineups ahead of a busy 11-game slate in the NHL on Tuesday night.

Recommended Plays: DraftKings

DraftKings maximum salary is set at $50,000

Bo Horvat (C – Canucks): $7,400
Vancouver is struggling on defense but that helps Bo Horvat maintain his high production rate in most matchups. The Cancucks’ leading goal scorer, Horvat has eight points across his previous four games played, including three games with multiple goals, so he’s a good discounted blue-chip prospect on Tuesday’s slate. The goal total is set at 6.5 and the odds favor the over, so expect plenty of scoring between Vancouver and Ottawa, with Horvat staying busy in the offensive zone.

Brady Tkachuk (LW – Senators): $7,800
Staying with the Canucks vs. Senators matchup, I like Ottawa’s top goal scorer as well on Tuesday night. 23-year-old Brady Tkachuk is tied for most goals (6) and leads the Senators with 16 points through 11 games played. He has at least one point in four consecutive games played and attacks the net with three to six shots on goal. Vancouver has a decent team but its goaltending is a vulnerability, which Tkachuk will expose with an arsenal of shots to attempt to end Ottawa’s five-game losing slump.

Alec Martinez (D – Golden Knights): $5,500
Alec Martinez is a high-floor play in DFS lineups and he’s available to plug in at good value due to his lowered salary on a busy slate. The 35-year-old defenseman hasn’t scored any points recently but he racks up blocked shots, finishing between three and six per matchup while attempting a couple of shots in the offensive zone. Vegas is an underdog on the road against Toronto but the veteran defenseman will be active in the defensive zone all night to stave off the Maple Leafs’ attack, making him a solid salary-saving option.

Ville Husso (G – Red Wings): $8,400
Detroit made quite a few moves this offseason but none have been more critical than addressing the leaky goaltending from last season. Netminder Ville Husso earned a big contract after playing well in St. Louis the previous few years and he’s living up to the hype, surrendering 1.86 GAA and a scorching .941 save percentage. He’s 5-1 as a starter for the Red Wings and draws a plus-matchup against Montreal on Tuesday night, so pay up to acquire Husso in lineups for guaranteed production.

Recommended Plays: FanDuel

FanDuel maximum salary is set at $55,000

Mika Zibanejad (C – Rangers): $9,800
You’ll have to pay up to get him in DFS lineups, but Mika Zibanejad continues to deliver points despite being a relatively low-volume shooter. New York is right in the middle of the Metropolitan Division race early on and they need to score goals to keep up with mediocre goaltending and defense, which is a surprise to start the season. Zibanejad leads the Rangers in goals (7) and is second in total points (15). He gets a good matchup against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night as a slight favorite with the line leaning towards over six goals scored, so pay up to land one of the best goal scorers rostered for either New York team.

Filip Forsberg (LW – Predators): $7,000
Nashville will hit the road for a late puck drop on the West Coast against Seattle as slight underdogs. The Predators have a minus-six goal differential, meaning they will need to find ways to generate offense against an improved Kraken team, so Filip Forsberg should factor in heavily. The 28-year-old winger has eight points in his last five games, including three multi-point outings, so insert him into lineups against Seattle netminder Martin Jones (G – Kraken), who has allowed four or more goals in four of ten starts this season.

Dougie Hamilton (D – Devils): $6,800
One of the most exciting and impressive young teams in the league has to be the New Jersey Devils. Veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton is now in his second year with the Devils and he’s making his presence felt. Hamilton occasionally delivers a point but he’s a high-volume shooter, attempting five to nine shots per game recently while racking up a couple of blocked shots in the defensive zone. He’s a bit pricey due to his usage in the offensive zone but Hamilton offers a high floor against the struggling Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Semyon Varlamov (G – Islanders): $8,300
The New York Islanders are quietly flying under the radar with a plus-12 goal differential and as a result, sitting in third place within the Metropolitan Division. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov is expected to get the start in the crease against the New York Rangers on Tuesday. It’ll be his first start since November 5th, when he surrendered two goals on 24 shots in a 3-0 loss to Detroit. He’s 2-2 as a starter this year and has a 2.91 GAA, so he’s playing well enough to warrant consideration in DFS lineups against a volatile Rangers team.
