Fantasy football can be an extremely fun game to play. It can also be highly frustrating at times. Nothing is more annoying than needing to make a last-minute waiver wire move because someone in your starting lineup is out for the week.
Sadly, there isn’t much you can do about it. However, I’m going to try and help.
Every week I will have six players you can grab off the waiver wire at the last minute and throw into your lineup. Some will succeed, while others will fail. Unfortunately, that’s how the game of fantasy football is played.
All the players in this article are rostered in under 35% of ESPN leagues.
Jimmy Garoppolo (QB – SF) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (22.9% Rostered)
The veteran quarterback has played well since taking over for an injured Trey Lance. Garoppolo has averaged 14.8 fantasy points per game this season. However, he has scored 16.7 or more fantasy points in 60% of the games, including two straight. Over the past two weeks, Garoppolo has averaged 274.5 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 17.5 fantasy points per game. Furthermore, the veteran quarterback has scored two or more touchdowns in three games this season and has at least one passing touchdown every week. More importantly, he has a great matchup on Sunday.
Kansas City has struggled to slow down passing attacks this season. Quarterbacks have averaged 2.5 passing touchdowns and 21.9 fantasy points per game this season against the Chiefs. Furthermore, Kansas City has surrendered at least two passing touchdowns and 15.3 fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in every game this year. More importantly, opposing quarterbacks have been effective against the Chiefs on a per-pass attempt basis. Opposing quarterbacks have averaged seven passing yards and 0.54 fantasy points per attempt against Kansas City this year. If Christian McCaffrey plays, he likely won’t see a complete set of snaps. Therefore, the 49ers might lean on Garoppolo a tad more than usual.
Kenyan Drake (RB – BAL) vs. Cleveland Browns (19.1% Rostered)
At the time of writing, Drake is rostered in only 19.1% of ESPN leagues. However, that number should double before kickoff on Sunday. Starter J.K. Dobbins will have an arthroscopic knee procedure next week and miss the next 4-6 weeks. Meanwhile, Drake played 58% of the snaps last week as Dobbins left the game early because of tightness in his surgically repaired knee. The veteran running back averaged 11.9 yards per rushing attempt and scored 19.2 half-point PPR fantasy points last week against the New York Giants. Drake is coming off his best performance of the year and has a great matchup this week.
The Browns started the season as one of the toughest teams on running backs. Over the first three weeks of the year, they held running backs to only 66.7 rushing yards and 16.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. However, things have fallen apart lately. Cleveland has surrendered 170 rushing yards and 36 fantasy points per game to running backs over the past three weeks, giving up two rushing touchdowns in every matchup. Furthermore, they have given up 195 or more rushing yards twice during that span. Even if Gus Edwards makes his season debut this week, Drake should lead the Baltimore rushing attack in Week 7.
Sony Michel (RB – LAC) vs. Seattle Seahawks (4.1% Rostered)
Finding last-minute waiver wire running backs is no easy task, especially with four teams on a bye. However, Michel is a solid dart throw option in deeper leagues. The veteran running back is third on the depth chart behind Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley. Unfortunately, Kelley suffered a knee injury on Monday against the Denver Broncos and played only two snaps. Filling in for the third-year running back, Michel played a season-high 32% of the snaps and had 11 touches in the game. While he only scored 5.7 half-point PPR fantasy points, the veteran running back saw the ball on 36.7% of his snap.
With Kelley out this week because of the knee injury, Michel will take over as Ekeler’s primary backup. While Isaiah Spiller will make his career debut, the rookie is unlikely to play much of a role on offense. More importantly, the Seahawks have been awful at stopping the run this season. Seattle has surrendered 116.3 rushing yards and 23.8 half-point PPR fantasy points per game to running backs, giving up over 100 rushing yards in all but one game. Furthermore, the Chargers won’t have Joshua Palmer, Donald Parham, and potentially Keenan Allen for this game. Therefore, expect a run-heavy game plan from Los Angeles.
Wan’Dale Robinson (WR – NYG) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (13.2% Rostered)
Unfortunately, Robinson’s rookie season has gone as planned. The second-round pick played briefly in Week 1, catching his only target before suffering a knee injury. He then missed the next four weeks because of the injury but returned last week against the Baltimore Ravens. Robinson had four targets in the game, the second-most on the team. The rookie caught three of them for 37 receiving yards and scored his first career touchdown. More importantly, Robinson scored 11.2 half-point PPR fantasy points on only 15 snaps played. Furthermore, he ran only 10 routes in the game and got targeted on 40% of them.
After a strong performance on limited snaps in Week 6, Robinson should have a bigger role moving forward. Meanwhile, the Jaguars are giving up 28.2 half-point PPR fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season, slightly above the league average. However, they have struggled at times this year. Jacksonville has surrendered over 44 half-point PPR fantasy points to opposing wide receivers twice this season, including last week against the Indianapolis Colts. They allowed Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, and Parris Campbell to all score 12 or more half-point PPR fantasy points in Week 6. With limited options in the passing game, Robinson could see a massive target share moving forward, starting on Sunday.
Donovan Peoples-Jones (WR – CLE) vs. Baltimore Ravens (8.7% Rostered)
While the focal points of Cleveland’s passing attack are Amari Cooper and David Njoku, Peoples-Jones has played well at times this season. When the third-year third receiver has earned targets, he’s played well for fantasy players. Peoples-Jones has averaged 8.8 half-point PPR fantasy points per game in the four contests with more than four targets this season despite not scoring a touchdown. Furthermore, the former Michigan receiver has at least four receptions in three straight games, scoring over 9.5 half-point PPR fantasy points twice during that span.
Meanwhile, the Ravens have struggled to stop opposing wide receivers this season. Baltimore has surrendered 33.8 half-point PPR fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers, the fifth-most in the NFL. Furthermore, they have given up seven receiving touchdowns to wide receivers this season, the seventh-most in the league. Peoples-Jones has averaged 15 yards per reception over the past three weeks. If he and Jacoby Brissett can connect on a few downfield passes on Sunday, the third-year receiver could end the week as a low-end WR2.
Evan Engram (TE – JAC) vs. New York Giants (32.1% Rostered)
Engram was a popular streaming option last week against the Colts. He ended the week as the TE20, scoring 6.5 half-point PPR fantasy points. While his performance wasn’t ideal for fantasy players, there are positives from last week’s game. Engram had six targets against the Colts, the most on the team. He also ran 20 routes, only three fewer than Christian Kirk and Zay Jones (23 apiece). Meanwhile, Marvin Jones is questionable to play with week with a hamstring injury.
More importantly, it’s a revenge game for the veteran tight end. The Giants have surrendered 11.1 half-point PPR fantasy points per game to tight ends this season, slightly above the league average. However, they’ve gotten destroyed by tight ends lately. New York has given up an average of 9.5 receptions for 99 receiving yards, one touchdown, and 20.7 half-point PPR fantasy points per game over the past two weeks. While he won’t score 20 or more fantasy points against his former team, Engram is an excellent last-minute replacement for Darren Waller.
If Engram isn’t available on your waiver wire, the opposing tight end in this game is a solid backup option. Daniel Bellinger (rostered in 8.1% of ESPN leagues) has scored a touchdown in back-to-back weeks, averaging 10.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game during that span. Furthermore, he had a team-high five targets last week and has at least three targets in four straight contests. Meanwhile, the Jaguars gave up 9.7 half-point PPR fantasy points to Jelani Woods last week. If you need a desperate long shot at tight end, Bellinger is your best option.
