Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Quarterback Streamers (Week 8)

Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Quarterback Streamers (Week 8)

Week 7 of the 2022 NFL season is in the books. Last week streamers struggled, as Marcus Mariota had only 13 pass attempts and scored 12.1 fantasy points in the Atlanta Falcons’ 35-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan was awful in the rematch against the Tennessee Titans. After scoring 17.8 fantasy points in Week 4, the veteran quarterback had only 9.9 on Sunday and got benched on Monday.

Hopefully, the quarterback play will be better this week. So, let’s look at the top streaming options for Week 8.

All the quarterbacks in this article are rostered in under 50% of ESPN 1-QB leagues and under 25% in superflex leagues.

Streaming Targets in 1-QB Leagues

Jared Goff (QB – DET) vs. Miami Dolphins (47.2% Rostered)

Yes, Goff has been awful over the past two games, scoring only 7.4 total fantasy points. Furthermore, he has zero touchdowns and six turnovers in those two contests. However, the veteran quarterback faced two talented defenses and had his star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for only 24.8% of the snaps in those matchups. Meanwhile, the former No. 1 overall draft pick was a fantasy superstar over the first four weeks of the year, averaging 2.8 passing touchdowns and 22.2 fantasy points per game. Goff has an appealing matchup this week after facing talented defenses in back-to-back weeks.

Miami has a talented defense on paper. However, they have struggled with injuries in the secondary this season. Quarterbacks have averaged 1.6 passing touchdowns and 19.9 fantasy points per game against the Dolphins, throwing at least two touchdown passes in four of their past six matchups. Furthermore, Miami has struggled against quarterbacks with more than two years of starting experience. They have surrendered 26.5 fantasy points per game to veteran quarterbacks compared to only 11.1 fantasy points per game when facing younger quarterbacks. If St. Brown is ready to play, Goff is a mid-QB1 against the Dolphins.

Daniel Jones (QB – NYG) vs. Seattle Seahawks (28.9% Rostered)

Not only do the Giants have a 6-1 record, but Jones has turned into a solid fantasy quarterback. The veteran is averaging 17 fantasy points per game this season, a career-high. Furthermore, the Giants are allowing Jones to use his legs more this year, as he has averaged 49 rushing yards and 7.5 fantasy points per game on the ground. More importantly, New York’s receiving core is finally starting to get healthy. In the past two games with a healthy Wan’Dale Robinson, Jones has completed 66.7% of his pass attempts for 187.5 yards, 1.5 passing touchdowns, and 21.2 fantasy points per game.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks have been a team to target when streaming quarterbacks this season. They have surrendered 18.3 fantasy points per game to the position. Furthermore, Seattle has given up at least 290 passing yards in nearly half of the games. More importantly, the Seahawks have struggled to contain running quarterbacks. They have given up 151 rushing yards to the position this year, ranking in the top seven allowed. Seattle has also surrendered two rushing touchdowns to quarterbacks, the fourth-most in the NFL. Jones isn’t the most appealing streamer option, but his recent play and the matchup make him a suitable candidate for Week 8.

Streaming Targets in Superflex Leagues

Andy Dalton (QB – NO) vs. Las Vegas Raiders (1.9% Rostered)

Last week Dalton had three interceptions and still scored 26.5 fantasy points, making him a top-six quarterback for the week. The veteran quarterback had 361 passing yards and four touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7. Despite his three interceptions, two of which got returned for a touchdown, Dalton mostly played well in the game. However, the Saints could return to Jameis Winston (rostered in 13.1% of ESPN leagues) in Week 8. If they do, Winston is a solid streaming option, though I hope and believe they will stick with Dalton for at least one more game.

Regardless of which quarterback starts for New Orleans, they have an appealing matchup against the Raiders. Las Vegas has surrendered 24 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, the most in the NFL. They have also given up an average of 2.2 passing touchdowns per game, giving up at least two in three straight contests. Furthermore, Davis Mills had a season-high 302 passing yards and 18.1 fantasy points against the Raiders last week. Hopefully, the Saints will get Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry this week. If both play, Dalton or Winston has top-five upside against the Raiders.

PJ Walker (QB – CAR) vs. Atlanta Falcons (0.7% Rostered)

Maybe Christian McCaffrey was the problem for the Panthers? All jokes aside, the Carolina offense played well last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. More importantly, Walker played much better on Sunday than he was in his first start of the year in Week 6. The former XFL quarterback completed 72.7% of his pass attempts for 177 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. Furthermore, his 15.1 fantasy points scored were the 12th-most last week heading into Monday night. More importantly, Walker found success targeting DJ Moore, which help lead to Carolina’s 21-3 win over Tampa Bay. However, was last week a fluke or a sign of things to come from the Panthers and Walker?

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold could be ready to play in Week 8, but interim head coach Steve Wilks suggested Walker would start next week. Wilks said, “it’s going to be hard to pull him out,” when asked if Walker would start next week after the win over the Buccaneers. Meanwhile, the Falcons have given up 21.5 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. Furthermore, they surrendered 481 passing yards, four total touchdowns, and a career-high 39.2 fantasy points to Joe Burrow last week. More importantly, the Falcons have given up at least 15 fantasy points to quarterbacks in every game this season. Expect Walker to have a solid performance against the NFC South division rivals.

Streamer to Avoid

Taylor Heinicke (QB – WAS) vs. Indianapolis Colts (7.3% Rostered)

Typically streaming articles tell you which players to target off the waiver wire. However, I will give one quarterback each week that you should avoid.

With Carson Wentz out at least the next month because of a fractured finger, Heinicke has taken over as the starter in Washington. Last year he started 15 games and averaged 13.9 fantasy points per game, ending the year as the QB20. Heinicke made his first start of the year on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, throwing for 201 yards and two touchdowns while scoring 14.4 fantasy points. However, he completed only 60.6% of his passes, had an interception, and several awful throws while ending the week outside the top-12 quarterbacks. Fantasy players shouldn’t buy into any hype surrounding the Washington signal caller.

While the Indianapolis offense has struggled this year, their defense has played outstanding. The Colts have surrendered only 14.8 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. They have also held quarterbacks to under 17.2 fantasy points in all but two games this year, including Patrick Mahomes in Week 3. Furthermore, Indianapolis has surrendered just 190.3 passing yards per game and only one passing touchdown over their past three matchups. More importantly, the Colts could get back a few starters on defense next week, including superstar linebacker Shaquille Leonard. Fantasy players need to avoid starting Heinicke against the Colts.
