Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Kyler Murray, Ezekiel Elliott, George Pickens (2022)

Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Kyler Murray, Ezekiel Elliott, George Pickens (2022)

The fluke starts and lucky finishes are behind us. Through a month of the fantasy season, your team is what it is. Either you’re near the top in points and good position for the playoffs. Or maybe you’re in the middle of the pack and need to make a move.

Luckily, FantasyPros has you covered. Not only is there the ‘Who Should I Trade?’ tool where you can get instant trade feedback, but every week in this space, we’ll dig even deeper into players that should be moved. There will be the classic one-for-one deals but also deals where multiple pieces would equate to one piece, which will be indicated with a ‘-plus’ next to the players’ name.

The Trade: Kyler Murray (QB – ARI) for Russell Wilson (QB – DEN)-plus

The Reasoning: For as long as Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray have been together in Arizona, they’ve fallen off a cliff (no pun intended) in the second half of the season. Specifically ending the last three seasons at 3-3-1, 2-7, and 2-5, respectively.

So it’s a bit disconcerting that Murray has yet to break out this season in the first half when the second half has traditionally been worse. Some will point to the absence of DeAndre Hopkins and the departure of Christian Kirk in the off-season, but Murray’s ADP over the last few seasons indicates that he should be able to overcome that for his fantasy managers.

Meanwhile, Russell Wilson is off to a worse start than his previous seasons but nothing catastrophic. So far, the 245 passing yards he’s averaging is 10 yards more than his career average. The touchdowns could use some improvement – he’s thrown just four in four games – but the recent loss of Javonte Williams could lead to a lot more passing/scoring opportunities for Wilson. He’s not turning the ball over and has been an effective runner so far this season (albeit a small sample size).

This debate isn’t about who is better between Murray and Wilson. Few people would pick Wilson in that case, but if you’re able to move Murray for Wilson plus a piece or two, that would be more than equitable.

The Trade: JK Dobbins (RB – BAL) for Ezekiel Elliott (RB – DAL)-plus

The Reasoning: Neither one of JK Dobbins or Ezekiel Elliott will be a league winner for fantasy teams this year. In Dobbins’s case, it’s about the volume. He’s never seen more than 15 carries in a single game, including this year when he’s seven and 13 in his first two games. And while he hasn’t been efficient in those two games, averaging just 3.2 yards-per-carry, that should change as he continues to ramp up after returning from his torn ACL. His six-yard-per-carry average in his rookie season wasn’t a fluke, and he still has the luxury of playing with Lamar Jackson, who might be a better runner.

Elliott is a shell of his former self. He’s still seeing the volume, averaging nearly 15 attempts per game which Dobbins has never done, but his 3.8 yards-per-carry in 2022 is a career-low. He’s also scored only one touchdown, which is well off his total of 10 last year.

But is he a more consistent option than Dobbins? The usage says yes. There’s no doubt that Dobbins is more efficient and is surrounded by better players – namely Jackson – but he’s more likely to see single-digit carries in a game rather than 20-plus. On the other hand, Elliott is guaranteed to see 200-plus carries this season and maybe more, depending on how the season unfolds in Dallas.

Back to the opening observation of these two, neither one is an RB1 for your fantasy team. But they both could be seen as RB2s. I would take Elliott.

The Trade: George Pickens (WR – PIT) for Michael Gallup (WR – DAL)-plus

The Reasoning: Week 4 was a breakout for George Pickens and Michael Gallup. For Pickens, the ascension of Kenny Pickett as the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh immediately paid dividends. Pickens ended the game with six receptions for 102 yards on eight targets – all season highs for the 2022 second-round pick. The talent was always there for Pickens, but Mitch Trubisky hamstrung his fantasy value. That won’t be the issue going forward, and Pickens may emerge as Pickett’s favorite target for the rest of the season.

But not so fast. Michael Gallup made his 2022 debut this week, catching two balls for 24 yards and a touchdown. He would have had more if the Washington secondary hadn’t kept holding him, but it was a welcome sight. It was Gallup’s first action since tearing his ACL, which looks like it has fully healed. And for Gallup fantasy managers (or potential managers), the timing is perfect. As successful as the Cooper Rush era has been for Dallas, they expect Dak Prescott to return to the starting lineup as soon as next week. And after the trade of Amari Cooper in the off-season, Gallup’s path to fantasy relevancy has never been easier. He sits only behind CeeDee Lamb for targets and, even then, should have weeks where he’s Dak’s top target. He’s turned in a 1,000-yard season before and has been healthy his entire career, save for the ACL tear last season.

Plenty of league mates will surely be intrigued by the possibilities of Pickens. But you at least know what you’re getting with Gallup.
