The tight end position matters greatly in fantasy football. They are not as flashy as their blazing fast, route-running counterparts at wide receiver. They do not get the same volume of touches as fantasy-relevant running backs. That can sometimes lead to them being overlooked or treated as an afterthought. Do not make that mistake.

Tight end is the shallowest position of them all. Finding production there on a weekly basis can be incredibly challenging, especially for those that did not draft or since manage to land one of the top handful of options.

Success can be found at the position by carefully playing the waiver wire week-to-week. The goal here is to help fantasy managers do just that by finding low-rostered (under 75 percent) tight ends sitting in the best situations for the particular week.

Tight End Waiver Wire Options (Week 2)

Logan Thomas (WAS) at Detroit Lions

Thomas was certainly one of the surprises of Week 1. It is not that his three grabs for 45 yards were anything spectacular. It was that he played at all.

The news came a few days prior to this past Sunday’s contest versus the Jags that Thomas may be active. That was quite surprising, considering the 31-year-old veteran suffered a torn ACL this past December. He was not only active but notably active in the passing game.

Thomas was targeted six times by new Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz. Thomas’ best play of the day was a 27-yard reception during his team’s fourth-quarter comeback. Clearly, he has already built some rapport with Wentz.

Coming up next on the schedule is a trip to Detroit. The Lions’ defense gave up the second-most yards to opposing tight ends last year and allowed Dallas Goedert to go for 60 yards on three catches Sunday afternoon.

Juwan Johnson (NO) vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Johnson maxed out at 47 percent of the Saints’ offensive snaps over his 14 games last season. In Week 1 of this year, he was on the field for 74 percent of them. The third-year pro is obviously a part of the plan for QB Jameis Winston.

Johnson saw five targets in Sunday’s win over the Falcons, hauling in two of them for 43 yards. The number of targets also tops any contest from last year. Despite only totaling 13 catches (22 targets) for 159 yards in 2021, the 6-4 tight end scored four times. Three of those touchdowns came from the arm of Winston.

The Saints will host the Buccaneers, who gave up seven receptions for 62 yards to Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz in their season opener. The range of outcomes for Johnson is vast, but the potential for a big performance is there.

Kylen Granson (IND) at Jacksonville Jaguars

Only Michael Pittman Jr. got more looks from QB Matt Ryan than Grandson did in Week 1. The fourth-round pick from 2021 brought in 3-of-7 targets for 22 yards in the 20-20 tie against the Texans.

Granson was on the field for 51 offensive snaps (55 percent) and figures to remain a significant part of the Colts’ passing attack. Ryan built a long track record of heavily targeting the tight-end position over his many years in Atlanta. Mo-Alie-Cox is in the picture in Indy too, but he saw just two throws his way Sunday afternoon.

The Jaguars’ defense gave up more than 300 yards and four touchdowns to the Commanders passing game in Week 1. Running back Jonathan Taylor is the focal point of the Colts’ offense, but there still should be ample opportunities for Granson to produce.
