Quarterback Bye Week Analysis: Draft Strategy & Streaming Targets (2022 Fantasy Football)

Quarterback Bye Week Analysis: Draft Strategy & Streaming Targets (2022 Fantasy Football)

“The bye weeks are coming! The bye weeks are coming!”

The 2022 NFL season is only a few weeks away, and the bye weeks will be right around the corner. Bye weeks begin in Week 6 and run through Week 14. However, no teams are on a bye in Week 12 because of the Thanksgiving triple header. With eight bye weeks to account for, fantasy players must do their homework and plan for bye week replacements.

In this article, the top-15 quarterbacks, according to FantasyPros Expert Consensus Rankings, will be labeled as “Starting Quarterbacks” to cover a typical 12-team fantasy league. I have provided two target streamers for every bye week to help you find the best matchup for your starting quarterback’s bye. Pay attention to the repeat names in this article and the defenses you want to pick on this season.

Also, make sure you take advantage of FantasyPros’ Bye Week Cheat Sheet and Quarterback by Committee Finder before your draft. These are excellent tools to help you win your draft and league.

Week 6

Yes, Carson Wentz is a very unpopular player these days. However, he was the QB13 last year, averaging 15.2 fantasy points per game. Wentz averaged 0.1 fantasy points per game more than Carr in 2021. Among quarterbacks with at least eight games played, Wentz was the QB15 on a points-per-game basis. More importantly, the matchup against the Bears is appealing. They have a young secondary and traded away Khalil Mack this offseason. Chicago is a defense you will want to stream against if possible all year long.

Before suffering a torn ACL, Jameis Winston was playing arguably the best football of his career. He threw 14 touchdowns and only three interceptions in seven games. More importantly, Winston put up those numbers with an awful receiving corps. However, he will have Jarvis Landry, Chris Olave and hopefully a healthy Michael Thomas this season. While the matchup against the Bengals isn’t great, this game should be high-scoring. Thus, giving Winston plenty of scoring opportunities in a shootout against the Bengals.

Week 7

Before the start of the 2021 season, many had Ryan Tannehill as a low-end QB1 in their rankings. After averaging a career-high 21.5 fantasy points per game in 2020, Tannehill averaged only 15.8 fantasy points per game last year. Yet, he had two of his three best games last year against the Colts. Tannehill averaged 21.3 fantasy points per game in those matchups, throwing three touchdowns in both games. Losing A.J. Brown hurts Tannehill’s fantasy value. However, he scored 21.5 fantasy points in the Week 3 matchup against the Colts when Brown played only 11.1% of the snaps. Tannehill is worth consideration in Week 7.

While he isn’t the most appealing quarterback, Jared Goff has been sneaky good at times for fantasy teams. Despite a limited supporting cast last season, he scored over 16.5 fantasy points in nearly half his games. Goff also had a solid 19 touchdowns to eight interception ratio in 2021, his best performance since 2018. Hopefully, Jameson Williams will be ready to play by Week 7. However, even without the former Alabama star receiver, Goff has the weapons to take advantage of an inconsistent Dallas defense.

Week 8

The fact that Justin Fields didn’t make the top-15 list shows how deep the quarterback position is this year. There have been plenty of reports talking up Fields’ improvement this offseason, and many expect a breakout season in 2022. He ended the 2021 season by scoring 16.9 or more fantasy points in four of his final five games. Part of his success in those games was his rushing ability. Fields averaged 56 rushing yards per game in those five contests. Meanwhile, the Cowboys gave up 3.3 fantasy points per game on the ground to quarterbacks last season. Fields has top-five upside in Week 8.

Miami’s offense last year was far from appealing. The offensive line had issues, and the receiving corps outside Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki, was lackluster. However, the Dolphins improved both areas this offseason with the additions of Tyreek Hill, Terron Armstead and several others. Now all the pressure is on Tua Tagovailoa to prove he’s the guy. While few expect him to become a weekly starter, Tagovailoa has plenty of appeal as a streamer. The Week 8 matchup against a young Detroit defense could be Tagovailoa’s best game of the year.

Week 9

After throwing three touchdowns in Week 1, Trevor Lawrence had only seven touchdown passes over the next 15 games. However, he should have a solid sophomore season after the Jaguars added several weapons in free agency, headlined by Christian Kirk. While he won’t be a weekly starting quarterback in 2022, Lawrence will be a popular name in waiver wire articles all year. The Raiders gave up nearly 17 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks last season and lost their top cornerback this offseason. Lawrence could offer top-five upside this week if the Jacksonville offense is clicking.

Historically, you want to avoid streaming against the Patriots. However, their defense took a massive hit this offseason after J.C. Jackson signed with the Chargers. The Patriots spent a pair of mid-round picks at cornerback but did very little to replace Jackson. Therefore, the Patriots could become a team to target when streaming this season. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan won’t make the top 20 in most rankings. The Colts have limited proven weapons in the passing game and an elite running back. However, Ryan is an appealing streaming option in Week 9, thanks to Michael Pittman‘s matchup against a sub-par cornerback unit.

Week 10

Fields makes his second appearance in this article. Make sure you plan for your bye weeks, as Fields likely is on a roster at this point in the season. However, he is the top streamer this week if he’s on the waiver wire. The Lions gave up 31 passing touchdowns last season, the third-most in the NFL. While they made some improvements to their defense this offseason, the Lions still have a young unit Fields should take advantage of in Week 10.

The Texans will be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season. While their offense lacks superstar players, Brandin Cooks leads a young but talented receiving core. More importantly, Davis Mills won’t have any competition for his starting role and plenty of opportunities to score fantasy points. Houston will be in a negative game script most of the year and chasing points. Meanwhile, the Giants lost several members of their secondary this offseason, including pro-bowler James Bradberry. Mills should have an easy time carving up a poor New York secondary.

Week 11

  • Starting Quarterbacks on a Bye: Tom Brady (TB)
  • Target Streamers: Carson Wentz (WAS) at HOU, Jared Goff (DET) at NYG

Once again, Wentz makes the target streamer list. The Houston secondary is a young unit led by rookies Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre. They lack an elite pass rusher up front and a difference-maker at linebacker. Houston will be a team you want to pick on all season long when streaming. Meanwhile, the Commanders’ offense will need to develop chemistry early in the season. However, they should be in sync at this point in the year and ready to pick apart Houston’s defense.

Goff makes his second appearance in the article, thanks to a great matchup against the Giants. While they have a few talented pass rushers led by rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants have a below-average defense. Their secondary lost several starters this offseason, and they lack a No. 1 caliber cornerback. Hopefully, the rookie Williams will be 100% coming off a torn ACL at this point and can help Goff destroy a poor New York secondary.

Week 13

  • Starting Quarterbacks on a Bye: Kyler Murray (ARI)
  • Target Streamers: Tua Tagovailoa (MIA) at SF, Trevor Lawrence (JAC) at DET

The 49ers have a talented front seven on defense. However, their secondary struggled at times last season. While they added Charvarius Ward in free agency, he can’t cover Hill and Waddle simultaneously. The rest of the cornerback unit in San Francisco is young and inconsistent. Assuming the offensive line can keep him standing upright, Tagovailoa should be able to take advantage of the 49ers’ secondary, thanks to his excellent receiving core.

Lawrence makes the streamers list for the second time in the article, thanks to a great matchup against the Lions. The Detroit defense has a few potential stars, led by pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson. However, this is a defense you will want to pick on this season. Goff and the Lions will likely be able to score against the Jaguars’ defense. Thus, putting pressure on Lawrence to put up points. While this is a matchup between two of the projected worse teams in the NFL, both quarterbacks are solid streaming options.

Week 14

  • Starting Quarterbacks on a Bye: Aaron Rodgers (GB)
  • Target Streamers: Davis Mills (HOU) at DAL, Trevor Lawrence (JAC) at TEN

One thing to consider when streaming quarterbacks is teams with plenty of opportunities to be in a negative game script. Hence, why so many quarterbacks on bad teams have made this article. Mills makes the streamers list for the second time with good reason, sporting a matchup against the Cowboys. Dallas should have Michael Gallup back well before this point in the season and can score at will on Houston’s defense. Thus, Mills will have plenty of opportunities to score fantasy points thanks to a negative game script and a potentially long period of garbage time.

The No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft makes his third and final appearance on the list. Like Mills, Lawrence and the Jaguars will have plenty of opportunities to chase points this season. While he struggled in the Week 14 matchup against the Titans, Lawrence had his best game of the year in the Week 5 matchup, scoring a career-high 21.7 fantasy points against Tennessee. Meanwhile, the Titans gave up 263.8 passing yards per game last season, the seventh-most in the NFL. Lawrence should have a productive fantasy performance against the division rival.
