Lamar Jackson has ‘visibly bulked up’
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has ‘visibly bulked up’ this off-season. (Source: Jamison Hensley)
Fantasy Impact: Jackson has been the best mobile quarterback in the NFL over the course of his career, often beating defenses with his speed and elusiveness. If he has actually bulked up, however, this could make him even more of a threat as a power rusher. He is still awaiting a new contract, but assuming he’s a full go for this season, his rushing floor should make him one of the best quarterbacks in all of fantasy football this season.
Kyler Murray, Cardinals remove ‘independent study’ clause
The Cardinals have removed the controversial “independent study” clause from QB Kyler Murray’s $230.5 million contract. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: The clause required Murray to watch at least four hours of game film weekly. The 24-year-old QB took offense to the clause, stating it was “a joke,” and Arizona announced they removed it after realizing what a distraction it had become. Murray is currently being taken as the fifth QB off the board, with good upside due to his ability to make things happen with his legs. His draft value is unaffected by this situation.
Matt Ryan increasing tempo during practice
Matt Ryan has intensified Colts’ practices by demanding an increased tempo between snaps. (Source: ESPN)
Fantasy Impact: Head coach Frank Reich stated to reporters that Ryan told him before camp began that he wanted to push the tempo and commented on the veteran QB’s confidence making 2022 unlike any previous training camp. The 37-year-old is currently being drafted as the 21st QB off the board, and he projects as a solid QB2 heading into the season.
Russell Wilson will control offensive tempo this season
On Wednesday, Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters that Russell Wilson would set the offensive pace for training camp and the regular season. (Source: Nick Kosmider on The Athletic)
Fantasy Impact: Wilson has thus far shown that the pace he prefers is “accelerated,” and the team is responding while learning the playbook and preferences of the veteran QB. As the tenth QB off the board, Wilson has the potential to end in the top 5 depending on Hackett’s offensive schemes to make him successful.
Kenny Pickett struggling early in camp

Fantasy Impact: Pickett, a first-round pick in this year’s draft, is struggling early in his competition for Pittsburgh’s starting QB spot against veteran Mitchell Trubisky. Coach Mike Tomlin has been insistent that it’s still early in the process and things could turn around, but either way, this isn’t favorable news for the rookie. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on further reports out of the Steelers camp to get an idea of who will be the starter for Week 1.
Baker Mayfield struggling early in camp
Baker Mayfield did not impress while taking first-team reps on Thursday, throwing two should-have-been interceptions in his first three passes. (Source: ESPN)
Fantasy Impact: Head coach Matt Rhule will continue flip-flopping between Mayfield and Sam Darnold for first-team reps. The 27-year-old Mayfield has an ADP of 193, making him the 29th QB off the board. Should he emerge from camp as the QB1 in Carolina, he is worth a flyer in fantasy formats, especially in an offense run by Ben McAdoo and flanked by Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore.
