Chris Carson retiring from NFL
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Seahawks RB Chris Carson is retiring from the NFL due to a neck injury. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: Carson was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 draft and was able to carve out a nice role in the Seahawks offense over the last few years. He amassed over 1,000 rushing yards in both 2018 and 2019, but a neck injury forced him to miss 13 games last season, and ultimately pushed him into retirement. The Seahawks will now be relying on former first-round pick Rashaad Penny, and newly drafted Kenneth Walker III. Both RBs will have major roles in the Seahawks offense and should be rostered in 2022.

Derrick Henry unlikely to play in preseason
According to a quote from Mike Vrabel, Derrick Henry is unlikely to get any action during the Titans’ preseason games. (Source: Terry McCormick on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: After missing the final nine games of the 2021 regular season with a broken bone in his foot, Henry returned to play in the Titans’ divisional round loss to the Bengals. The Titans being cautious with their superstar running back is not surprising with the intense usage he has seen over the last few seasons. Fantasy managers should not overthink drafting Henry with their first-round pick in drafts this summer, as he has an elite mix of usage and efficiency in a run-heavy offense.

Joe Burrow undergoing surgery on appendix
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow is set to undergo surgery to remove his appendix and will miss some time. (Source: Ian Rapoport on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: Fresh off a Super Bowl run, Burrow didn’t seem to skip a beat despite spending a majority of his 2021 offseason in rehab. This offseason, the former Heisman winner will once again have to miss time due to surgery. Burrow finished last season as the QB8 and is currently being drafted as the QB6, according to FantasyPros. In 2021, he threw for 4,611 yards and 34 touchdowns, rushing for a pair as well. With a loaded offense and a deep playoff run under his belt, Burrow should still be a smash to be a top-end QB1 despite missing time.

T.Y. Hilton ‘in the mix’ for the Colts
According to PFF’s Ari Meirov, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard told reporters that re-signing T.Y. Hilton is still “in the mix.” (Source: Ari Meirov on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: The Colts are still looking for a veteran WR to pair alongside the trio of WRs Michael Pittman, Parris Campbell and rookie Alec Pierce. Hilton has played 10 seasons with the Colts, starting nine games in Indianapolis last season. Even with arguably an upgrade at QB in Matt Ryan, Hilton wouldn’t have much fantasy value at this stage of his career. Hilton had seven consecutive seasons as a top-24 WR in fantasy to start his career, but he has failed to crack the top-40 players at the position in each of his last three seasons. With his late-career injury concerns, he wouldn’t be much more than a rotational pass catcher and a veteran presence in the locker room.

Tyrion Davis-Price competing for backup role
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, third-round rookie RB Tyrion Davis-Price will be competing for the second-string role in the San Francisco 49ers’ backfield behind RB Elijah Mitchell. (Source: Matt Maiocco, NBC Sports)
Fantasy Impact: San Francisco has been a deep, frustrating backfield for fantasy managers over the last half-decade, and the 2022 season looks like it may be no different. According to Maiocco, the starting job seems like Mitchell’s to lose, but health is a concern for the second-year back. Sitting behind Mitchell on the depth chart are RBs Trey Sermon and Jeff Wilson. Maiocco says that the two of them, alongside Davis-Price, will be competing for the backup job this season. Whoever emerges from the backfield as the No. 2 could be a valuable handcuff in the event of a Mitchell injury, but certainly, head coach Kyle Shanahan has shown that he can be unpredictable when it comes to who he plays at RB. Rookie Davis-Price is currently going on average as the RB65 in half-PPR formats, according to FantasyPros, the third-highest among 49ers backs, and could be a good, late-round investment after San Francisco felt the need to invest decent capital in him this offseason.

Leonard Fournette slimming down for training camp
According to Greg Auman of The Athletic, RB Leonard Fournette’s trainer Jordan Bush said the running back returned “bigger than [they] wanted,” but they have gone through training to shed off the extra weight. (Source: Greg Auman, The Athletic)
Fantasy Impact: Fournette is coming off his most productive fantasy season since his rookie year, finishing as an RB1 for the second time in five seasons. The LSU product had 1,266 scrimmage yards and 10 total touchdowns in 14 games in 2021. After reports came out that Fournette showed up to training camp well overweight, Bush said they put Fournette through “fat camp,” putting him through saunas and extra cardio every day to help shed off weight. If Fournette can get back into playing shape ahead of the season, he could become a value if public confidence continues to stay low as a result of weight concerns. Fournette now goes on average as the RB12 in PPR formats, according to FantasyPros.

Jimmy Garoppolo to report for physical Tuesday
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to report to training camp to undergo a physical on Tuesday. (Source: Matt Maiocco)
Fantasy Impact: Garoppolo has been dealing with the recovery for a shoulder surgery he had back in March, and possible trade suitors for the veteran quarterback have been put off by his injury status. The physical may cast more light in if he has actually fully recovered, and depending on the results of it, more teams could possibly be interested in Garoppolo. For fantasy purposes, managers should wait until he has found he is healthy and on his new team before picking him up.
