Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings: Tyler O’Neill, Dustin May, Mike Soroka (2022)

Fantasy Baseball Injury Stash Rankings: Tyler O’Neill, Dustin May, Mike Soroka (2022)

We’ve had some noteworthy activations since last week, including Mookie Betts, Max Scherzer, Liam Hendriks, and Drew Rasmussen. Ty France is in that weird place of maybe being activated today, but since he’s not activated already, I’m keeping him on the list.

I base rankings on a mix of talent and how close a player is to returning. Whether or not we agree on a particular ranking isn’t that important, though. Instead, maybe there’s a name that you forgot about, a player to stash for later that might help you down the road. If that happens, this effort will have been a success.

As always, I’ll give you my top-10 injury stashes for right now, and then I’ll get into the weeds a bit at each position.

Top-10 Players to Stash Right Now

1 Jacob deGrom (P – NYM)
2 Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2B, SS – MIA)
3 Tyler O’Neill (OF – STL)
4 Kenley Jansen (P – ATL)
5 Chris Bassitt (P – NYM)
6 Harrison Bader (OF – STL)
7 Tyler Stephenson (C, 1B – CIN)
8 Ty France (1B, 2B, 3B – SEA)
9 Fernando Tatis Jr. (SS, OF – SD)
10 Bryce Harper (OF – PHI)

Catcher

1 Tyler Stephenson (C, 1B – CIN)
2 Danny Jansen (C – TOR)
3 Yasmani Grandal (C, 1B – CWS)
4 Salvador Perez (C – KC)
5 Luis Torrens (C, 1B – SEA)
6 Yadier Molina (C – STL)
7 Curt Casali (C – SF)
8 Mike Zunino (C – TB)

Stephenson, Jansen, and Grandal are all rehabbing, so keep an eye out in daily formats. Any of the three could return before next week.

First Base

1 Ty France (1B, 2B, 3B – SEA)
2 Frank Schwindel (1B – CHC)
3 Miguel Sano (1B – MIN)
4 Edwin Rios (1B, 3B – LAD)

That’s it. That’s the list. This is one of the few times “that’s it, that’s the list” is actually appropriate.

Second Base

1 Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2B, SS – MIA)
2 Ty France (1B, 2B, 3B – SEA)
3 Brandon Lowe (2B, OF – TB)
4 Thairo Estrada – 2B, SS, OF – SF)
5 Enrique Hernandez (2B, OF – BOS)
6 Jean Segura (2B – PHI)
7 Ozzie Albies (2B – ATL)
8 Chris Taylor (2B, 3B, SS, OF – LAD)
9 David Fletcher (2B, SS – LAA)
10 Nick Madrigal (2B – CHC)

Lowe is finally slated to begin rehabbing this week, while Taylor (left foot fracture) is without a timetable for his return. Estrada is on the Covid-19 IL and is expected to return tomorrow (Friday).

Shortstop

1 Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2B, SS – MIA)
2 Fernando Tatis Jr. (SS, OF – SD)
3 Thairo Estrada (2B, SS, OF – SF)
4 David Fletcher (2B, SS – LAA)
5 Kevin Newman (2B, SS – PIT)

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hasn’t been shut down entirely, but it sounds like he may not be ready to return when first eligible.

Third Base

1 Ty France (1B, 2B, 3B – SEA)
2 Evan Longoria (3B – SF)
3 Jake Burger (3B – CWS)
4 Chris Taylor (2B, 3B, SS, OF – LAD)
5 Edwin Rios (1B, 3B – LAD)

I touted Longoria last week in my NFBC Hitting Guide, so of course, he’s on this list just days later. If there is one, the silver lining is that Joey Bart was recalled in a corresponding move–and I know more than a few of you are depending on him in your deep leagues.

Outfield

1 Tyler O’Neill (OF – STL)
2 Harrison Bader (OF – STL)
3 Fernando Tatis Jr. (SS, OF – SD)
4 Bryce Harper (OF – PHI)
5 Brandon Lowe (2B, OF – TB)
6 Kyle Lewis (OF – SEA)
7 Luis Gonzalez (OF – SF)
8 Oscar Gonzalez (OF – CLE)
9 Hunter Renfroe (OF – MIL)
10 Austin Meadows (OF – DET)
11 Jorge Soler (OF – MIA)
12 Thairo Estrada (2B, SS, OF – SF)
13 Mitch Haniger (OF – SEA)
14 Michael Brantley (OF – HOU)
15 Wil Myers (1B, OF – SD)
16 Tyrone Taylor (OF – MIL)
17 Enrique Hernandez (2B, OF – BOS)
18 Chris Taylor (2B, 3B, SS, OF – LAD)
19 Taylor Trammell (OF – SEA)
20 Trevor Larnach (OF – MIN)

The prizes here are the 6-7-8 guys, as there’s a chance they are actually available if you’re in a shallow format. Chase the upside of youth. That said, Hunter Renfroe is undoubtedly capable of doing some damage upon his return, especially from a power perspective. And while I’m frustrated at Austin Meadows’ lost season thus far, he’s too talented for me to write off completely, and I’m keeping my eye on his rehab, which began yesterday.

Pitcher

1 Jacob deGrom (P – NYM)
2 Kenley Jansen (P – ATL)
3 Chris Bassitt (P – NYM)
4 Tyler Mahle (P – CIN)
5 Chris Sale (P – BOS)
6 Nathan Eovaldi (P – BOS)
7 Marcus Stroman (P – NYM)
8 Garrett Whitlock (P – BOS)
9 Lance McCullers Jr. (P – HOU)
10 Dustin May (P – LAD)
11 Mike Soroka (P – ATL)
12 Andrew Heaney (P – LAD)
13 Steven Matz (P – STL)
14 Jakob Junis (P – SF)
15 Zach Eflin (P – PHI)
16 Edward Cabrera (P – MIA)
17 Ranger Suarez (P – PHI)
18 Freddy Peralta (P – MIL)
19 Bailey Ober (P – MIN)
20 Tylor Megill (P – NYM)
21 Jesus Luzardo (P – MIA)
22 Rich Hill (P – BOS)
23 Chris Archer (P – MIN)
24 Zach Davies (P – ARI)
25 Tyler Glasnow (P – TB)

Jacob deGrom should start his second rehab on Friday and work towards 40 pitches. Chris Bassitt should return from the Covid-19 IL on Friday. Sale was rusty in his most recent rehab start, but it sounds like he could still return to Boston sometime next week.

Noteworthy on this list is the news that Whitlock will return as a reliever…but his proximity back to the show keeps him higher up on this list. McCullers Jr., May, and Soroka could be difference-makers if they can return to health, and the drumbeats on all three have been positive recently. Lastly, I had to get Tyler Glasnow on the list, as there’s an outside chance we see him return before the season’s end, and that’s just something I’m into rooting for.
