USFL DraftKings DFS Primer: Week 8 (2022)

USFL DraftKings DFS Primer: Week 8 (2022)

There are three weeks left in the USFL regular season. However, half of the playoff field is already set. Not coincidentally, the players in the forthcoming tables are mostly on teams still fighting for a playoff berth. Thankfully, because USFL rosters are small, even the teams that have clinched will probably use most of their starters for the bulk of games. Still, it’s a matter to consider from now on.

Quarterbacks

Jordan Ta'amu had a forgettable game last week. Nevertheless, he scored the second-most points among quarterbacks in Week 7. Ta'amu is once again the top DFS quarterback this week, possessing an unmatched ceiling. As Cody Main of Establish the Run tweeted, Ta'amu is one of the few quarterbacks who aren't sharing snaps, he's rushed often, and Tampa Bay's pass rate has risen.

Case Cookus is a rock-solid alternative at a substantial discount from Ta'amu. Cookus has attempted 30 or more passes in three of his four starts, throwing for multiple touchdowns twice, and adding value on the ground, rushing for 18 yards or more three times.

Running Backs

Bo Scarbrough has emerged as a workhorse back. He was eased into action in his first contest in Week 5 but has been a bell-cow runner since. Scarbrough has had back-to-back efforts of at least 100 rushing yards, amassing 204 yards on 43 carries. He's also hauled in all three of his targets for 16 yards. In addition, according to Ian Hartitz of Pro Football Focus (PFF), Scarbrough had an 86% snap share and 57% route participation rate last week. Volume is the king at running back.

Reggie Corbin has been hyper-efficient. Sadly, he shares the backfield duties with Stevie Scott and Cameron Scarlett. The pessimistic view is an inefficient week would destroy his DFS value. However, the optimistic view is the potential for an eruption if Jeff Fisher awards him a few more opportunities.

Corbin has rushed for more than 100 yards in three of his last five games, including trouncing this week's opponent for 154 yards and a touchdown in Week 4, adding an eight-yard reception. According to FOX Sports, the Stars have coughed up the most rushing yards per game (163.0), markedly higher than the second-highest total of 140.6 yards per game. As a result, Corbin is the 1A running back to Scarbrough as the No. 1 back on this week's slate.

Interestingly, the Stars have found their footing on the ground lately. Philadelphia's running backs have toted the rock 53 times for 303 yards and five touchdowns in the previous two games. However, Matt Colburn has done the bulk of the heavy lifting, carrying the pigskin 40 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

Still, Darnell Holland is a viable GPP contrarian pick. He's efficiently scampered for 82 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. According to Caesars Sportsbook, the Stars are 5.5-point favorites, and the game's total of 46.5 points is the highest on the slate. Thus, there is a chance Colburn and Holland can both provide DFS goodness.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

KaVontae Turpin has been a do-it-all whiz. He's fifth in scrimmage yards (481), averaging 11.6 per game on the ground and 51.6 through the air. The speedy wideout is third in receptions (31) and leads the USFL in receiving yards (361). Turpin has also had a nose for the end zone lately, scoring all three of his touchdowns in the previous two weeks. Thankfully, he's quarterback-proof, so whether or not De'Andre Johnson returns from his injury, Turpin will be an integral part of New Jersey's offense.

Jordan Suell and Devin Gray are outstanding stacking options with Cookus. Suell is coming off his best game of the year, reeling in all seven of his targets for 72 yards and a touchdown. Further, according to PFF, the big-bodied wideout has had the highest route participation rate (95%) for the Stars. Suell has also had an outstanding 27% air yard rate, 18% target rate and has a deep average depth of target (ADOT) of 10.9 yards downfield. Meanwhile, in Week 7, Gray led the team in route participation (97%) and air yards (68). Finally, he had season highs for targets (seven), receptions (seven), receiving yards (70), and touchdowns (one) against the Panthers in Week 4.

It wasn't a flawless performance for Jonathan Adams last week. However, he reached paydirt for the third game in his previous four. Moreover, Adams tied for the team lead with six targets and led the Breakers with 66 air yards.

John Franklin also scored last week, extending his streak to three straight contests reaching the end zone. The 20-yard touchdown was Franklin's only grab of the game, but he had six targets and an eye-popping 117 air yards, leading the Bandits in the latter category. As a result, he's the best stacking partner for Ta'amu or a stellar standalone value pick.

Defense and Special Teams

The undefeated Stallions have been the best defense in the USFL, ranking first in PFF grading for overall defense, pressure and coverage. They're also third in run defense, which you can see in the following tweet.

Birmingham's defense is a sack-machine, recording precisely three in five straight contests and six of seven. In addition, they had two sacks in the outlier contest and have forced 12 turnovers. As a result, Birmingham's DST has scored five or more fantasy points every game and exploded for 14 and 15 points in Week 2 and Week 3, respectively.

The Gamblers are the cheap alternative to the Stallions. Unfortunately, Houston has been the poster child for heartbreaking losses. Still, their defense has gotten after the quarterback, earning PFF's second-highest pressure grade en route to 16 sacks. Houston has also done an amazing job turning over opponents, tying for the league lead in interceptions (nine) and fumble recoveries (seven) while pacing the USFL in forced fumbles (12).
