While rookies are the hot topic this time of year, there are always plenty of second-year NFL players ready to either break out or continue the hot start to their professional career. Let’s take a look at notable second-year fantasy football players with a chance to break out in 2022. We’ll get started with wide receiver Rondale Moore.

Second-Year Breakout Candidates: Rondale Moore (2022 Fantasy Football)
The target waters for Rondale Moore are muddy entering his second season. The bull case for Arizona’s slot Mighty Mouse is that he drew targets at a high rate when on the field in 2021, and he was successful in making plays with them. Moore was third among all wide receivers in yards after the catch per reception (minimum 50 targets, per PFF). He also ranked 28th in route win rate and 30th in targets per snap. This is a perfect time to buy the dip for a talented second-year wide receiver.
– Derek Brown
Rondale Moore is entering his second season with a straightforward path for an expanded role in the Cardinals’ offense. He flashed his potential early on for Arizona in 2021, with 182 receiving yards in his first two NFL games. But Kliff Kingsbury never opted to go back to Moore with the likes of A.J. Green and Christian Kirk playing solid roles. We should see Moore – and his dead-last 1.3 aDOT – experience significant growth in Year 2 especially with DeAndre Hopkins suspended for the first six weeks of the season.

Here might be the biggest wildcard on this list. Moore steps into an offense that had Christian Kirk and his 112 targets depart, star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins receive a six-game suspension, and former first-round pick Marquise Brown acquired in a draft-day trade. With Hollywood Brown taking one of the outside spots, Moore should be able to slide in the slot and be a great quick-throw option for Kyler Murray with his amazing speed and quickness in the open field.
In Moore’s rookie season, we saw glimpses of what he could be in this offense, where he recorded 35.2 PPR points in his first two games. The problem was, after that, he combined to score 36.6 PPR points over his next six games. Moore scored double-digit PPR points in just four of the 12 games he played last season in total. That type of inconsistency was the downfall for him as a useful fantasy option.
One of the things that will need to change for Moore to be successful is how much he’s on the field. Moore had snap shares of 82.4% and 63.6% as his two highest totals for games while topping 50% only four other times on the season. In other words, Moore played above a 50% snap share in just half of his games in his rookie season. Moore should remain on the field more this season with the Hopkins suspension, and even though I don’t expect his aDOT to be high as a slot receiver, he should be able to be a productive fantasy asset and someone that could be a dark horse to finish second on the team this year in catches.
