Injury Roundup: Clayton Kershaw, Tylor Megill, Ryan Mountcastle (2022 Fantasy Baseball)

New week, new injuries to report.

Many players popped up on the injury report in the past week, and some were able to avoid serious injuries. Let’s take a look at those who were not so lucky.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Carson Kelly (C – ARI) – Oblique

Carson Kelly is currently suffering from a strained left oblique and will be out for at least a week. Once Kelly can partake in baseball activities, the D-Backs will reevaluate him to see when he will be able to return.

Baltimore Orioles

Ryan Mountcastle (1B/OF – BAL) – Wrist

Ryan Mountcastle was placed on the Injured List (IL) with a left wrist forearm strain. He was out of the lineup for the third consecutive day when the Orioles decided to make the move. He does not have a timetable for a return.

Chicago Cubs

Nico Hoerner (2B/SS – CHC) – Ankle

On Sunday, Nico Hoerner was placed on the IL with a sprained right ankle, retroactive to May 12. The corresponding move was to activate Andrelton Simmons, who now looks to take the everyday shortstop role going forward.

Nick Madrigal (2B – CHC) – Back

Nick Madrigal was dealing with tightness in his back when the Cubs decided to place him on the IL. He will be re-evaluated in 10 days before determining whether he will be ready to return.

Chicago White Sox

Lucas Giolito (SP – CWS) – Illness

On Friday, Lucas Giolito was placed on the COVID-19 IL after experiencing symptoms of the virus. The team is hopeful that he will be able to return this week.

Cincinnati Reds

Tyler Stephenson (C – CIN) – Head

Tyler Stephenson took a foul ball off his mask during Saturday’s game that worried the Reds. He dodged a bullet as he passed all concussion tests performed. However, this isn’t the first time Stephenson has been dealing with concussion-like symptoms, and his status should be monitored going forward.

Cleveland Guardians

Josh Naylor (1B/OF – CLE) – Illness

Josh Naylor landed on the COVID-IL on Friday after experiencing symptoms. It is not clear whether he has tested positive or not. He does not have a timetable for his return.

Detroit Tigers

Austin Meadows (OF – DET) – Head

Austin Meadows was placed on the IL after continuing to experience dizziness, light-headedness, and nausea during the game on Sunday. He was previously dealing with an ear infection that caused him to experience vertigo symptoms. It is unclear when he will be activated.

Michael Pineda (RHP – DET) – Finger

Michael Pineda was placed on the IL with a fractured middle finger after taking a come-backer off his hand in the second inning of his last start. He does not have a timetable for his return, but he is expected to miss more than the minimum since it is a fracture.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Clayton Kershaw (LHP – LAD) – Back

Clayton Kershaw was placed on the IL when he experienced stiffness in his lower back. MRI results did not show any structural damage, and he is only expected to miss the minimum amount of time. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen on Wednesday, which should provide us with more information regarding a return.

Miami Marlins

Jesus Luzardo (LHP – MIA) – Forearm

Jesus Luzardo was placed on the 15-day IL on Sunday with a left forearm strain. The injury was believed to be suffered during his last start, and is without a timetable to return.

Joey Wendle (2B/SS/3B – MIA) – Hamstring

Joey Wendle was placed on the IL with a right hamstring strain that he suffered on May 12. This is the second time this season that Wendle is dealing with a hamstring injury, so the Marlins will be careful with him going forward.

Minnesota Twins

Chris Paddack (RHP – MIN) – Elbow

Chris Paddack was placed on the IL after dealing with an inflamed elbow. Tommy John surgery is on the table for him, and the Twins decided to place him on the 60-day IL.

New York Mets

James McCann (C – NYM) – Wrist

James McCann is expected to miss six weeks with a fractured hamate bone in his left wrist, which will require surgery.

Tylor Megill (RHP – NYM) – Lat

Tylor Megill was placed on the IL with bicep inflammation. An MRI later revealed that he is dealing with right bicep tendonitis and will be shut down from throwing for a few days before being re-evaluated.

Tampa Bay Rays

Manuel Margot (OF – TB) – Hamstring

After being in and out of the Rays lineup, Tampa Bay decided to place Manuel Margot on the IL with a right hamstring strain. He is expected to be out through this week, and the Rays will look to re-evaluate him once they get closer to the end of the stint.

Texas Rangers

Mitch Garver (C – TEX) – Elbow

After being out of the lineup for two consecutive days, Mitch Garver was placed on the 10-day IL with a flexor sprain. The Rangers are unsure when he will be able to return to the lineup.
