Greetings, friends. We’re back for another baseball season. More importantly, we have a fun new series this year!
Welcome to the Daily Opener.
Every morning, I’ll be with you to recap the previous day of baseball and talk about what stood out to me. We’ll find fun stats. We’ll lament some injuries. We’ll take a peek at the day ahead. And we’ll have a few laughs.

Top Stories
- Last year for Leading Off, we had a “Today in Shohei” segment just so we could talk about the ridiculousness of Shohei Ohtani every morning. We may need to bring it back because he’s, well, he’s just the best. Last night, he struck out 12 Astros over six shutout innings in which he allowed just one hit while also going 2-for-4 with 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 RBI, and 1 R at the plate.
- Logan Gilbert last night: 6.2 IP, 0 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 4 K in a win over Rangers. He has allowed just 1 ER through 3 starts (16.2 IP).
- Miguel Cabrera recorded his 2,999th hit yesterday. And we know what comes after 2,999. The end of Cabrera’s career has been kind of sad because of the absolutely atrocious contract (he’s on the books for another $32M in 2023 and THEN has to be paid another $8M to buyout the remaining two years and $60M left on his deal), but he’s one of the best hitters of all time. Most will remember just how good he was in his prime, even if this contract and his performance over the last several years have clouded his overall greatness.
- Byron Buxton returns to the lineup today. He avoided serious injury and missed just five games. He’s leading off and serving as the DH today.
Fun!

Today’s Starting Lineup
- Obviously, we’re watching for Miguel Cabrera’s 3,000th hit today. Yankees vs. Tigers is an early 1:10pm ET game today.
- No nationally televised games other than Giants vs. Mets on ESPN+ again today.
- Overall, it’s a small slate with a bunch of early games today. Another early game I’ll be watching because of the pitching matchup is Blue Jays vs. Red Sox featuring Kevin Gausman vs. Tanner Houck.
