NFL DFS Value Plays: Championship Round (2022)

Championship Week is here, and I don’t see any way this weekend tops what we had last weekend. That may have been the single greatest weekend of football from top to bottom ever. Every game came down to a walk-off score, with three game-winning field goals and a game-winning overtime touchdown. We can only hope for half of that excitement in these games. From a fantasy perspective, it’s a two-game slate, which is always hard to find value. In fact, I didn’t even include quarterbacks this week in the column because there are only four of them. Let’s get to it…

Running Backs

Sony Michel (LAR) vs. SF | $4,600 DK  | $5,300 FD

Cam Akers is clearly the starter, however, his two untimely fumbles last week may cause the coaching staff to pause, especially when they get in the red zone. Michel, on the other hand, has only four fumbles in his four-year career and only one this season. Akers may still get more touches, and he will get all the receiving work out of the backfield, but it might be Michel vulturing touchdowns when they get in close.

Jerick McKinnon (KC) vs. CIN $5,100 (Draftkings Only)

I split the two Kansas City backs by platform. McKinnon is slightly cheaper on DraftKings and Edwards-Helaire is much cheaper on Fanduel. Both running backs have the PPR upside, but I think McKinnon’s is slightly higher and he out-touched CEH last week  15-to-8. I expect this backfield to remain somewhat of a committee, making neither back being a great play, but both of them are values to allow you to pay up elsewhere.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC) vs. CIN $5,700 (Fanduel Only)

Where McKinnon may have the higher PPR upside over CEH, it’s CEH that has the higher touchdown upside. The fact that he is $500 cheaper than McKinnon on Fanduel makes him even more enticing. Despite his limited touches last week, Edwards-Helaire averaged 8.6 yards per carry with a long of 22. Had he scored a touchdown, we’d be looking at his game log a little differently.

Wide Receivers

Tyler Boyd (CIN) @ KC | $4,200 DK | $5,800 FD

Everyone will be on Ja’Marr Chase this weekend, and those looking to pivot off Chase will likely use Tee Higgins, leaving Boyd the lowest owned Bengals’ receiver. Last week, the Chiefs had trouble slowing down Bills receiver Cole Beasley in the slot as he racked up six catches for 60 yards. Boyd plays a similar role in this Bengals offense, and he could see a good number of targets come his way as the Cheifs look to slow Chase the way they slowed Stefon Diggs last week.

Brandon Aiyuk (SF) @ LAR | $5,000 DK | $5,600 FD

Everyone will be keyed in on Deebo Samuel, and rightfully so, but Aiyuk quietly had six catches for 107 yards in that Week 18 matchup with the Rams. The 49ers are going to need someone besides Samuel to make some plays, and Aiyuk is the most likely candidate outside of tight end George Kittle.

Tight Ends

C.J. Uzomah (CIN) @ KC | $3,400 DK  | $5,600 FD

With two of the best tight ends in the league playing this weekend in George Kittle and Travis Kelce, the default value tight end had to be either Uzomah or Tyler Higbee. I’ll take Uzomah in what I think will be the higher-scoring game, because let’s face it, if you’re not playing one of the top tight ends then you are hoping they score — so I’ll take the player in the game that should have more touchdowns.
